That dent on the hood (the one you said had holes filled in) used to be where the factory (or aftermarket) emblem used to sit. People tend to push on them or sit on them and over time it dents that area.. Have 2 Zs myself that have the same issue. Just an FYI for yea. Good job so far!

Might it be a good idea to keep working on the engine in case you need to send parts away? These could be seen to while you continue on the body. Is this why the 911 build has paused? The engine? Excited to see the colour choice. 👍🏻
@HomeBuiltByJeff7 жыл бұрын
That is the plan on this one. I will keep tackling the engine a bit in each episode along with the body work, so hopefully it keeps on moving forward. I don't want to be waiting for parts like with the 911.

They make a panel shrinking disc for a grinder they work well on hoods and large panels. They dont spot heat and cause more distorsion. You will have to shrink those dents out. Check out eastwood automotive.

Like your can do attitude, I tack weld washers on the dents then use slide hammer with a hook on the end to grab the washer. If you do a row of washers you can slide a bar thru the holes and pull a larger or longer dent.
@HomeBuiltByJeff6 жыл бұрын
I have seen the washer thing a few times, but I like the idea of pulling a long dent all at once.
@truthseeker84837 жыл бұрын
How about making a slide hammer and using screws welded on? Love the Bogan wooden engine mount!
@HomeBuiltByJeff7 жыл бұрын
I don't have a slide hammer to start with, but I like the control I have with the lever, so I don't accidentally over pull a dent.

If you have to deal with any heavy surface rust I recommend using POR-15, im using it on my projects at the moment its the best rust protection on the market in my opinion! Although that looks like a very clean shell

Thoroughly impressed with your project and the manner in which you're going about it. You have to start somewhere and just diving into it is the best way to learn. It's quite inspiring. Makes me want to start working on my project. Subscribed for sure. Can't wait to see how this turns out. the 240 is one of my all time favorite cars!! Keep up the good work!

Give it a go. The proper stud puller would be better and neater, but you have to get one first.

Jeff where did you get the front spoiler + flares? Currently building a 260z and considering this direction. Cheers mate
@HomeBuiltByJeff7 жыл бұрын
I got them from ebay. The flares are plastic, which I like, as they are not likely to crack like fibreglass can.
@fifteenbyfive7 жыл бұрын
Wow Jeff you're a wizard. Great work with that bucket and hood. Hey Jeff, not sure what your plans are for wheels and tires, but as an option you should be able to fit 16x8 rims with zero offset, and those should be able to wear up to 245mm tires without fitment issues or spacers required. I'm bringing this up because it might save you some time, money not having to put fender flares on it. I only say "should be" because I have a 280Z so I can't be 100% sure the 240 is the same. With 245s at least on the rear it'll look properly stanced with the tires barely coming out from the edges of the fenders. With a low enough profile tire and some coilovers properly adjusted it'll look fantastic. I doubt you'll go for this actually but just wanted you to know. Some people don't like the flares and they're not really necessary if you choose carefully. Good luck Jeff, you're the man! You could maybe do a video on your background and how you came to know how to do so many amazing things. I know you're mechanically/technically inclined but there's probably a bit of explanation behind all that too somewhere.
@HomeBuiltByJeff7 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. For me I really like the look of the flares like the race cars of the period had. I am still working out the wheel sizes I am going for though.
@fifteenbyfive7 жыл бұрын
I figured that'd be the case. It's period correct and commonly called "JDM" over here from the folks who add them. It seems like you guys had the more Japanese-like models while over here in the US we got left-hand-side drives and extra not-so goodies like the "park bench" bumpers on our 260s and 280s due to crazy new federal safety regulations of the day.

Jeff, what sort of nails did you use. Ive tried doing the same thing, but the Clouts i used just disintegrated when i tried to weld them on
@HomeBuiltByJeff7 жыл бұрын
I used clouts as well, but you have to be very delicate, with your welding as they do disintegrate very easily. Although you can blow through the panel easily as well.

Good idea with the nails for the dent puller I wonder if they have enough hold to use a slide hammer as well
@HomeBuiltByJeff7 жыл бұрын
I like the lever method, as it has more control and you are less likely to over pull the dent.
@SC457A7 жыл бұрын
Curious, On the dent puller wouldn't the flat part deform or dent the part it is resting on? It is the pivot of the lever created, so It will apply downwards force on the sheet metal. I suppose the flat part was had enough surface area to avoid it. Just asking. Mean nothing wrong, was a great idea to avoid buying a tool that is not very cheap and not used often.
@HomeBuiltByJeff7 жыл бұрын
I actually got the idea from a similar type of tool used with some stud welders. But, as you mentioned, the surface area of the 'foot' is probably at least 100 times the surface area of the stud contact that is being pulled, so that is why it works.

No. There are a lot of reasons lead is not used anymore. Modern fillers are much lighter and simpler to use. Lead is the old way of doing it, but it is not really better.

Love your work Jeff. Just a point. That flat spot in the center with the two holes that had been brassed over is where the factory hood badge went. The flat spot may have been left as the last owner still used a badge just not one that required the two mounting holes used by the factory badge. Love your stud puller too btw 😉
