Getting something a little bit older, whatever it happens to be, is a good start to learn how to tinker on things yourself. You have to start somewhere, just give it a go.

i've said it before: the outtakes are awesome! you guys are a charming couple. as for the hood (bonnet) i vote for fiberglass. the justification being it's consistent with the 70s sporty/club racer theme as per the flares.

The cowl definitely has little nylon 'bushings' that go around those tabs.

Welding nuts sounds painful but seemed to go okay.....I would go for a fibreglass bonnet and get some weight saving..and no rust....Mrs Jeff did well considering the evening beverages!

When you're welding in nuts to anything, my teachers had taught us to put a bolt in, since it not only gives you a point to hold the nut, but it also keeps the threads from warping.

The bodylines of the car look so beautiful at 12:57. All stripped down and silver on a dark background makes it pop out at me. One could easily upgrade the ECU in the Z32TT for 360-365 HP out of the box. Over 20% power gainer from essentially a bolt-on part. Out of a 3.0L six cylinder from 1990. 400+HP from a computer and intake/exhaust, and one could go meal on Ferarris and Lambos. That car was Godzilla in 1989 when it came out with 300 HP. It was high priced (for Japanese) but an absolute bargain pound for pound vs anything else. Motorweek has a good review of it on KZbin for the 1990 model year. It trounced all over the Corvette.

the heat trick saves lives with rusted in bolts, one of the best ricks in the book on the older Japanese cars (imports mainly because of the salt on the roads in the Japanese winter)

5:22, I am having the same issue on my car Jeff, but it was hit lightly in the front end. So that's why, your car is probably the same. Problem is if you have to push down like you were saying it messes up the alignment between the fender and the headlight bucket. It's a real PITA to get right.

Hey Jeff, nice work again, mine is still in bare metal as well and I noticed when I work with bare hands the following week there is surface rust hand marks all over due to the grease and salt on my skin. If you wear those thin work gloves it eliminates that issue and I'm not forever burnishing surface rust now. Cheers!

I am not too fussed, as I will be resanding and then rust treating the entire car in a couple of weeks before I epoxy it.

12:20 Might be a better idea to use some double sided tape to keep the edge of the flare stuck down, instead of Sikaflex Last week I caught the door bump strip on my E36 on my pants and ripped it off. Turns out a previous owner had done the same at some point and just Sikaflexed it back on. I bought some new clips to reinstall it properly, but needed to pull off some of the old sikaflex to get it to sit right. When I pulled the Sikaflex off, the paint came with it. A nice big 5c piece sized chip right down to the undercoat. Luckily it's under the bump strip so you can't see it. So if you want to be able to remove the flare again at some point, I'd recommend against using Sikaflex.

I'm not sure of the wheel size & offset the Z will be running but generally the fender panel wheel arch lip is cut out to accommodate the new wheel size & then the fender flare overlay is put in place so there is no tire rub on the stock fender. I run 15 X 8 zero offset with 225 X 50 tires on the front on a lowered 240Z that has fender flares molded into the fibre glass after market front fenders.

Jeff, you're quickly finding out that these Z panels were never manufactured with any symmetry or ensured to have even panel gaps from the factory, let alone after years of punishment and others attempts to repair them fall into place after removal and reshaping. Typical of the front chrome bumpers is their "pinching" at the ends at the front fender channels. The other is the large panel gaps under the headlight scoops which can take hours of playing with to align evenly. What I have found is you can either get one of these two areas to look correct, not both...unless you cut and weld. It's the curve of the bumper which causes this effect and since you have one that has been beat up before, you may want to consider just cutting it in half at the center point, bolting them up at the fender channels and rewelding the center at its new curve. The pair of thick steel bumper mounts can be heated and reshaped to accommodate this new curve with some effort and/or slotted to move in/out to correct the gap under the headlight scoops. On my own personal 240Z (which in an earlier life had a couple incidents, one with a tree, and the other with a car in a parking lot) I have spent hours aligning the front chrome bumper to even out all these inaccuracies and have come to an acceptable outcome. It's nicely tucked under the scoops, at an even height across the front, and is 2mm from touching the front fender channels by means of some metal panel spacers carefully snuck in after the main pair of brackets were secured to pull it away from the body a bit. Maybe you could work some magic with fiberglass to make that front skirt line up with the arch flares. It could look sharp!

Don’t understand why the corners of the bumper bar being too close to the wing is a problem. After what you did with the doors, cut a bit of the wing out and make a new bit. B is for Built had the same problem with the wheel arches on his 240, and they were expensive. They seem to be generic flairs being sold as bespoke for a certain model ( in this case a 240). I’m on my third kit car. If I have bits made for those cars I expect them to fit, if they don’t they go back and I male my own. Remember, if you can’t buy it or steal it you have to make it.

I thought about that, but I think that I would paint it anyway. The carbon bonnet thing is a bit of a passed fad now I think (particularly that most car just cosmetic carbon anyway).

I think we may be talking about 2 different things here. What I was referring to was the 2 front side marker lights (amber) located on each of the front fenders and the 2 (red) lights located on both rear quarter panels, which were on all 240, 260 and 280 zeds.
