More questions? details? Below other videos to help answer a lot of those questions regarding the how-to and other details. The 1st link is a general overview kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKHFnZeee6h8ldk The second video is a little more detail about how I put together my own set-up kzbin.info/www/bejne/emetaaRshNeId5Y Roasting temps are between 450-550 degrees F. Time varies with the outside temps. Winter temps extends the roasting time a bit. The amount of beans your are roasting can also impact time. You can buy ‘green’ beans online. We’ve used Theta Ridge thetaridgecoffee.com, www.coffeebeancorral.com, and sweet Marias www.sweetmarias.com Generally speaking, I lean toward African origin coffee. But I’ve tried beans from various countries from every continent that can grow beans. That’s part of the fun! It takes some work to get the set-up, but so worth it! Hope that helps!

Yes. Obviously makes a better cup of coffee. But so many questions. What kind of drum are you roasting in? How are you rotating it? How do you regulate the temperature? What temperature? Where do you get your beans? I'm a newbie that wants to get started. Any info would be great!

What is the attachment to the rotisserie do you use? Also what temp are you looking for on the grill and do you have time stamps that you use for different roasts? Or are you just looking for color? This was a great video and I would really like to try roasting at home!

Hey Panda, The basket is from everdure. BUT, I found that the second time I roasted with it , I noticed the seams did NOT line up well and were dropping a significant portion of beans. So I can’t recommend it right now. I used a smaller basket for my first year that I modified from a stovetop roaster. So we are working on a fix, or a different solution. As for time roasting, there are 2 crucial points...by SOUND. By ear, listen for “1st crack,” the beans start popping with a sound similar to pop corn - larger pops. The crack is the result of moisture in the green bean splitting the coffee bean. If you stopped roasting right there, you have a lite roast. If you continue roasting, over the next 2-3 minutes, your beans are deepening in color, more brown. The second sound is “2nd crack” . This is more of a softer rapid fire snapping sound. At this sound your bean would be a dark roast. 30 seconds to a minute after 2nd crack and you are in to an espresso roast. Because, temp and humidity and moisture content of the bean vary, so to will the time to and after each “crack”. That’s why roasting by listening to the bean is so crucial. You can experiment with different end times when roasting and the same bean will actually taste different depending on where you stop. As for temp, my burners are on high till I get a temp over 425. Then I back down the burners as it climbs over 500. If you like a dark roast, it gets pretty smoky and is best done well ventilated. Lighter roasts are not as smoky, but the aroma is very strong. That’s why I prefer outdoors. You can also roast over a fire with a wok and constant stirring, or in very small quantities with an air popcorn popper. If you want to try that, I can point you to a air popper. Keep an eye out for future videos Thx for watching!

I would not roast beans for each days coffee (for meI typically 1 or 2 cups). I would probably roast enough to last the week. So what device is that used on the bbq to roost the beans?
@Housebarons
@Housebarons Жыл бұрын
Hey Fred, That is a vegetable rotisserie (Everdure) that I found that has small enough holes that don’t allow the beans to fall through. Some coffee beans can be very small depending on country of origin. I roast 2 cups of green/raw beans which is enough coffee for me for a week or so. Thx for watching!

What are you using for the actual roaster setup? Looking to start this myself but am having a hard time finding videos that talk about the parts. Is it a grill standard rotisserie motor? Did you piece it together? Purchase it as an all in one unit? Where? What are the positives and negatives you have experienced? Loved it and look forward to following along!
@Housebarons
@Housebarons 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Brian, I have cobbled this together. I started with a stove top roaster that I adapted for the grill. That motor had a plastic case that melted near the grill. So I built a rig to keep the motor a foot away from the grill. So it’s an assemblage if parts. A rotisserie set MIGHT work but you need: A basket that has a small enough grid that beans won’t fall through. The one I used in the video ( Everdure ) actually did leak beans at the seams so I’m looking for a fix. A motor 30rpm is what I use. Slower might work. I’m currently trying to put a fool proof kit together. Once I’m done I’ll try and post a how to build video... or maybe all the parts as a kit? The negatives - finding and putting all these pieces together. A pain. BUT Seriously, roasting your own coffee is awesome. The taste is amazing. The control of the roast affords such variety. And it takes about 20 min to do - very little clean up. It’s worth the effort. Keep an eye out for the next video. BTW - you can also roast small amounts in an air popcorn popper. If you are interested, let me know and I can dig that info up. My son-in-law got started that way. Thx for watching!!

I do the same method as this video, the basket I use is a BOS & SARINO 3L roasting cage along with a 8KG rated BBQ Spit rotisserie battery operated motor (i modded it by soldering a power back direct to the motor internally so it spins faster).

Hey Tony? That’s and everdure rotisserie tumbler. I needed a basket that had small enough holes so the small beans wouldn’t fall through. Thx for watching.

I'm super excited to try this. It's a bit of a struggle to find out what I need but I have a question. Does the coffee taste a bit of Smokey charcoal? Does it have wooden undertones?
@Housebarons
@Housebarons 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Gametube, The quick answer is no. The longer answer is that when you roast the coffee there are two markers you listen for: 1st crack and 2nd crack. As the coffee roasting nears completion, you’ll hear the coffee bean popping as the moisture in the bean is released. 1st crack sounds like pop corn slowly popping - louder and more distinct sounds. 2nd crack happens about 2 or so minutes later and sounds a little like when you pour milk on rice crispys - rapid popping - not as loud as 1st crack. Depending on where you stop the roast - between 1st and 2nd crack, the flavor profile will change. Where you buy beans will often tell you what flavor notes you should expect between 1st and 2nd crack ( also goes by other names like city roast etc) This is where the “art” of brewing coffee comes in. The same beans can give different flavor profiles depending on how long you roast. Different fruits, citrus, chocolate, and amounts of acidity all depend on where the beans are grown and how long they are roasted. 1 exception : when you roast beyond second crack, that is an espresso roast. The beans have most of their special notes roasted out as the beans become charcoal to black in color. The further past 2nd crack the darker the bean till it is black w/ and oily sheen. ( Starbucks espresso roast looks like this) . These are great for espressos. It has a stronger flavor , but not as nuanced as the light- medium roasts between cracks. I roast with propane on my grills. I have one grill dedicated only to coffee. So no outside flavors are carried to the bean. It’s just heat applied to the bean. If you used wood for heat, you might well be adding unwanted flavor to the beans. Roasting your own coffee is no doubt tons of fun. AND a big money saver once you get the set-up. You can buy a quality green ( raw) coffee bean for $5-7 per pound! ( you can pay more or less than that - but it will always be cheaper than the same bagged bean in the store! Im certain you’ll enjoy this once you get started! And this is literally the freshest coffee you can buy. Since coffee is losing/ has lost its freshness 10-14 days after roasting, the stuff you buy in the store can’t compare unless it a dark dark roast. Have fun!! Just let me know if you have any questions - Im glad to help! Thx for watching!

@@Housebarons you are an absolute legend for the detailed reply. Lots of really useful info you gave me there. I am taking that you can't recommend charcoal then? Would he flavour be too tainted by the lump wood? Btw I only use lump charcoal with no light fluids

Hey Gametube…, Thx!😃 If you just wanted to get up and running fast, I saw a video of a lady in Central America roasting coffee beans in a big iron skillet over a fire- that seems like it would work and the beans would be protected in the skillet from wood smell- though no small effort constantly stirring them. Some day I will try this. Another way I’ve seen is people using air poppers ( for popcorn ). The drawback is that you can only do small amounts at a time ( 4 ounces?) . I bought a nice used 4-burner grill off of Facebook market place for $40 - that’s my coffee only grill. I would steer away from charcoal unless using an iron skillet. One more thing - as you roast closer to 2nd crack and beyond the beans give off a fair amount of smoke - fills my garage in winter - but I love the roasting smell so no big deal. Just FYI. Hope that helps
