In the UK we call them dado rails. They are an iconic and classic piece of victorian interior design, I am so surprised people don't like them. Especially with proper panelling mouldings, I also liked them on the entire wall. I like them with the top half wallpaper, bottom half panelled dado rail. They're iconic!

@@meh5069 That’s how I feel, too. Plants can look cheap real quick when paired with 1) macramé, and 2) plastic pots. Especially the pothos and snake plants. And then there’s the people who overdo it and put their plants all over the damn place like it’s a nursery and it just makes the space look cluttered. I rather have one large plant or tree near a window.

I usually agree with you 75% of the time, but I think busts and velvet fabric are classics. We're in a time when those particular classics are copied by mass consumer brands, hence it seems "cheap" and "trendy" to you. If they are not well done, then sure, get rid of them, but if they are quality, they will always be classic. You are still free to not like some classic things of course - there are some classic things I don't like. BTW, quality velvet wears like iron and is one of the best fabrics if you have cats!

My house was built in 1895 and although it didn't have chair rail in it when we bought it, we've since put it in (along with picture rail). I think it definitely helps add to the historic/old feeling of the house, which in my opinion is a good thing. I think it's probably not the way to go if you want your house to feel modern but I'm going for a more historic look.

I can't agree with the "no hanging stuff" ... especially plants😅... If someone loves plants (me. lol) and they like the way it looks 🤷‍♀ I don't think it is outdated, just a personal taste thing. I know most people wouldn't want a load of plants in their space, but some people (me 😅) really love it... I do agree that people should stop gifting orchids. If you are going to gift a plant there are much better ones to give, but I also don't really think we should give plants to people unless we know they like plants. That is coming from someone who has an over abundance of plants. LOL

Track curtains in the vertical blinds track are a great idea. Didn't know you can fit them in! I've just removed the blinds and installed curtain rods, but it'd be more convenient to push open and close this way. Orchids have very 1990-2000s luxury spa vibes. They're not that easy to care for, and there are plenty of other more interesting plants to have in your space. In general, it's better to grow plants you actually like that will work with your lighting instead of what is trendy. Fiddles and cactus need a lot of sun. It's a problem waiting to happen.

I really enjoy your content. Congratulations on the plaque! I do have a couple thought on this video. It seems to be a really common misconception that busy colorful designs work well for actual child’s room. And I often see KZbinrs repeating this by saying, maybe you should move this to your child’s room. But children tend to be extra sensitive to over stimulation and it can result in more stress for your child and more behavioral issues by having them in an overstimulating space. So I would not recommend super colorful Terrazzo for a child’s room. Also as a cat owner, performance velvet is probably the best material for holding up to cat claws. So I probably will not be getting rid of my performance velvet furniture ever. As a fellow Theater kid I could already tell that you were a theater kid without you saying so lol. Thank you for the content that you create!

My take on chair rails: they can definitely read traditional, but may have their place, eg in a 3rd fl room with weird ceiling lines, or in. a dining room which otherwise looks and sounds like an echoey box. I'd use care not to go full traditional cove moldings. And I would consider them in a very large living room. In main, I think if you have a room that would benefit from two different wall treatments-paint and wallpaper, two-tone, etc in order to unify celling lines, add interest, or break up a vast volume, then yes. And definitely, if you have an historic house with old growth hardwood deep cove and crown molding, preserve them. Or at the very least, salvage for someone. Maybe the ticket, if you have them, is to do some really unexpected funky wallpaper over or under.

Chair rails are fine, just paint them and the entire wall (not just half) the same color. The chair rail will then become a minor detail.

Books are not decor, and neither are plants. I’m lucky to have and indoor garden room where my 60+ orchids live in winter, along with my giant (and small) cacti. And a handful of tropical trees. It’s a joy room. Only cut flowers venture into the rest of the house because it’s darn near impossible to live with the kind of light needed to keep growing plants healthy. I enjoy your (sometimes) draconian opinions even though I value rule breaking as a rule. My house and gardens are a respite from rules-my “church." So far, my house of worship does not include cheap blue velvet or vertical blinds, but if it did-I’d be cool with that.

I have a lot to say today! Re chair rails--I toured a historic home years ago and that early 1800s home had chair rails. The guide explained it was because in those days, after dinner, everyone literally pushed the furniture up against the walls. Chairs and tables were rarely in one fixed spot, but pulled out and placed wherever you wanted to use them. That's why early American furniture is so delicate and light. And rooms weren't crammed full of furniture either. For some reason I like to imagine George Washington pulling his chair up to the fireplace.... I guess when big, heavy Victorian furniture came into fashion the custom of pushing furniture against the wall went away. But anyway, chair rails were to literally protect the walls from the furniture that was pushed up against it. Therefore, they really serve no purpose in this day and age.

PAige, just love your video's always!!! I have bought a house and I'm almost 'done' furnishing it (your never really done though...), and you've been such a big influence in my style decisions. Honestly it look sooo good now, cosy, cool, homey but also designy.. :D One note about the youtube plaque above the toilet (congrats btw!!! siiii well deserved!): it is really bad Feng Shui to do that. Eveything you hang above or near the toilet is what you don't want to attract in the future. You 'flush' away the energy of the item. It is a great place to do thing you don't really want in you life (darker colors, dried plants, ...) . I don't know if I 'believe' in feng shui, but better safe than sorry and not put your family pictures or awards above the toilet :p

I think chair rails add to a space when folks are more bold/exploratory with colour in the rest of the space or if they choose a fun colour for the rails.

I’m with you on the vertical blinds. Hate them! Also really really hate popcorn ceilings. A friend of mine actually used to spray ceilngs and I told him that in 10-15 yrs, everyone would regret getting that shit in their houses.

My older home has chair rails in the dining room! I like them. They are wide enough that I have placed a few framed photos on it along the wall, and some small fun trinkets. I painted the whole wall the same color, a warm terracotta orange, and the trim is a off-white. Congrats to you on your KZbin accomplishment! I will accept your bragging during this video. :) Keep doing what you are doing.

We put chair rails and crown molding in our dining room but it’s all painted the same color as the wall. I like having the texture without having a random white line around the room.

I think with any of these things its good to avoid if you're doing it because its a trend, but if you truly love them, it seems ridiculous to get rid of them because they're not to someone else's taste, and also the opposite of sustainability or finding your personal style. Personally you can pry my hanging plants, cacti, and velvet throw pillows from my cold dead fingers 😅🤷🏻‍♀️
