The home trend I hate is GREY!!!!! I've been looking for a retirement home that doesn't require tons of work but maintains some historic charm. In an effort to "update" their home to put it on the market, everything--and I mean literally everything is grey. The cabinetry in both the kitchen and the bathrooms: Grey. The walls, grey. The cheap wood look vinyl plank flooring or carpet is grey. Inside and out, the house has been consumed by grey. And any semblance of historic charm has been replaced by something grey. Gag! I'm so over grey.

Worst thing is real estate agents are advising people to do this. Waste of money because the first thing 80% of people are going to do is repaint. First impressions matter and when it's just depressing grey it's really not an inviting or sellable feeling.

I wish my home was painted Gray when bought it, the seller was kind of offended that I painted over the freshly painted beige walls. The furniture now is mostly light Gray, but my walls are lavender and peacock and peacock Emerald green :)

We did greys and whites for walls/flooring/cabinets because it feels nice and bright and is also a great backdrop for whatever fun colors you want to throw in the mix. Grey is also one of my favorite colors though so I’m a little partial. 😅

I clean peoples homes for a living and have literally been in hundreds of different homes. I find the initial feeling of walking into a space is so fascinating! Not wanting to come across judgemental, but really notice the difference in feeling of homes with colour on the walls, art and plants and some original items like old one-of-a-kind things from thrift shops or thankyou notes from friends stuck on the fridge door, its like a warm hug, compared to homes that are more like a magazine showcase home where everything is very neutral or matchy matchy, glossy surfaces and all items purchased new...

Things I used to dread finding in a cleaning client’s home: massive soaking tub that requires one to walk in it in order to clean it; sofa-at-foot-of-bed because it’s impossible to make the bed; gorgeous glass shower stall, takes an extra half-hour if there’s hard water; cat box; cat box in kitchen.

true, a messy home with 90s era interior design aesthethics can be beautiful while many 2020s 2010s era homes just look so godamn ugly and clinical, i like millenials taste in everything else but you guys have absolutely no idea when it comes to either interior design or architecture i cannot look at another imitation 90s office building except without the cool postmodernism anymore, Minamalists have uglified the world, and minamalism as a whole isin't bad it was shown with grace and beauty until the 2010s

YES! It's akin to many of our cities: they are homogenized with national chains and franchises. Little towns have lost their flavor and uniqueness. I would much rather have a notable, even quirky, little town that I remembered because it was DIFFERENT. It's okay to be DIFFERENT.

Only thing i will slightly defend as a Scandinavian is the white rooms😅. Yeah its kinda boring. But the reason so many scandi homes are white is that during the dark winter months, when the sun is only up a couple of hours behind clouds, you really crave the light to bounce around as much as possible. 😊

I feel like white rooms can be done right as long as you don't leave the walls empty. White pairs well with big, bright and happy paintings, wood decorations or shelves with books ect. In combination with colorful furniture or rugs in warm colors you get the color bouncing off from the surfaces onto the walls and giving them a little colorful glow. Also warm lighting tints white walls to a more cozy creme.

Me too. I absolutely love white walls - it makes things look spacious and everything looks great next to them. There's nothing like white paint to cure your ills. My kitchen cabinets were old and rickety. I gave them a good dose of white paint and new hardware and they look sensational!!! Accessorized the kitchen and people think I have a new kitchen.

I've had a similar conversation about quality kitchen tools versus garage tools. My response was that the kitchen is used many times daily... how often are the cars worked on? So yes, I want a frying pan, spatula and strainer that are quality and not damaged. That is comfy and useful/practical... the way I want to live.

I grew up very working class, and for most of my adult life I thought clean, modern minimalism was aspirational, because it was so far from the tiny houses overstuffed with the detritus of actual living that I grew up in. Through my twenties I continued to be poor af, and having new, modern-looking things was still so aspirational to me because it was sort of the impossible dream. I couldn’t even afford IKEA, it was all rummage sales and thrift stores. It was only when the pandemic hit (I was 34) and I spent SO MUCH time in my house that I started to realize that I don’t actually like sleek minimalism at all, I was just still trying to shake off the poverty stink that it always felt people could sniff out on me. Anyway so now I’m gradually redoing my house in a combination of Georgian revival and maximalist Victorian spookiness lol

I too love maximalist victorian spookiness. I'm breaking all the trendy rules. Dark colours making my hallway look colder and closed in. Every room a theme. No flow. Like the Palace Of Versailles, every room is extra. I don't want vast, bright emptiness. I want rooms that are a comfortable escape from the outside world. I do have some Ikea though. Dark wood Billy bookcases are a life saver.

Amazing. But yeah there's def a lot of classism baked into these aesthetics that's pretty gross. Personally I've always felt the minimalist houses seemed cold and unlived in. Cluttered houses feel loved. Like real ppl live there through all their ups and downs. I'm also a bit of a hoarder so I may be biased but I think a house should have evidence of life

I have lost hours to looking through the Ikea catalogs my roommate would bring to our apartment way back in my 20s, but nowadays, I know I am mostly drawn to a craftsman style. Honey hued wood, jewel-toned stained glass details, accent walls inspired by flowers. Book cases built in to walls, curiosity cabinets of souvenirs from past adventures.

I agree totally with all of these observations-especially about the kind of minimalism that means you can't really live in the room without worrying every second about 'messing it up.' And you are so right about the couches. I would also include the couches that are made with seats that are so wide from back to knee that you have to be a giant to sit in them, or use about 40 pillows to bring you to where you can actually dangle your lower legs over the edge and reach the floor. I would also like to add in how much I hate the trend of painting everything grey, stark white, etc. FFS. How unwelcoming and cold is that? (And it will look incredibly dated in just a few years' time.) Embrace colour. Not peely-wally greyish-toned colour, but nice warm colours that echo nature. Don't be afraid to use a different colour in all rooms. Don't be afraid to paint your bedroom a sunny yellow, orange, warm green, etc. If it must be blue, a turquoise blue is a lot more uplifting than a blue that looks like what you see outside at twilight on a rainy day. This myth that you have to have only cool calm colours around you in your bedroom in order to go to sleep at night is idiotic. Why? Because you turn the lights off when you go to bed at night. !!! What IS important is waking up in the morning to a cheery environment that makes you bounce out of bed, raring to go because it's a beautiful summer day-not some depression-inducing atmosphere that says stay in bed-it's all autumnal rain, sleet, snow and fog out there. See, I can do rants as well.

Now, in defense of the couch at the end of the bed trend... My husband and I lived in our house along with our adult grown children and just didn't want to be around them much 😄 We were lovers and best friends after 30 years... so we turned our bedroom into our retreat and it wasn't big enough to have a different space for everything, SO, instead of always laying in bed to watch TV or crochet or eat or whatever, we first had a loveseat and then later changed out to 2 overstuffed chairs w a small table in the middle. We just wanted our own "space" without having to sit on or lay in bed all the time. My sweet husband passed away in March at the age of 61 after 38 years together... I'm a 56 year old widow ... but I cherish those times with him alone in our space. 💔❤‍🩹

Yes! So much this. On the "museums aren't cozy" thing, I keep thinking back to traditional (like, very traditional) Japanese decor. I'm always wildly impressed that it manages to NOT look like you should be wearing stilettos, diamonds, and a cocktail gown with a glass of Bollinger in hand at all times. So it is possible to be minimal and--if not cozy--at least warm. I wish more minimal designs were like that, rather than 50 Shades of Art Gallery.

My grandparents (in the 50's) had this great chartreuse velvet couch tucked in a corner with down feather cushions - as kids we loved it because it was so soft you could bury yourself in it. Fast forward 40 years later and I now had this ugly but structurally sound couch I decided to redesign to make it more comfortable because I remembered that couch. Wrapping new foam cushions in down was the answer. The medium foam provided the needed structure to the cushions and it is still a very comfortable couch that you can actually sleep on - without ever having to "fluff up" all the cushions. Well, never except when the cat decides to sleep on the top of the matching chair cushion...since most people don't sit there, it was made with softer foam and more down.

My in-laws are from Greece and they have very old, family heirloom, wooden and amber bead strings like those. They’re large and medium too. They put them on coffee tables or entry ways but sort of out of the way. They serve as larger and decorative versions of “kompoloi” or smaller worry beads popular in the culture. They’re supposed to represent putting your worries into the items, kind of like sending good vibes into the house. I love their old vintage ones but can not stand the Home Goods ones because the people that buy them don’t apply the same cultural meaning and they look so cheap and mass produced.

Yah, I have several of those beads in my home, too, but they’re more of a marble finish, and come in greens and blues and oranges. I keep them on my door handles and bedroom door, as that’s what my friend’s Greek mom told me to do. They’re sort of a quasi talisman.

@@sarahbeekman3814 Yes, that’s the intent of these replies. I would add that the beads we’re referencing have utility, too. Many people use them similar to how Catholics use rosaries-for prayer, contemplation, meditation…a place to channel the worries into. I do enjoy rolling them between my fingers. It’s soothing.

I love comfort. Right now… listening to you reclining on my DEEP INEXPENSIVE BIG LOTS SOFA. I’ve got a huge blanket on it (to keep crumbs, people stains, ECT) , ALSO… some pillows (as in bed room ones). Sofa is deep.. I mean deep. I have arms on sofa, too. You can achieve the same look with all beige- this is what my mother’s kitchen is like. And then she has fun colourful plates. Everything else is beige and ivory. It looks monotone but it’s much easier to add and remove items because white feels like it needs to be matched perfectly

I shop comfort first, then esthetics. I was so angry when the expensive couch I bought from a salesman who said it would soften up… he lied. I returned it on the last day that I could, at great inconvenience to the store from where it came. Too bad!!! Keeping an uncomfortable couch is just not happening, no matter how “in style” it supposedly is. I found one I loved that is Uber comfortable. Yay me.

Yes to everything! I would add "clutter core" which of course has been on the rise as a counter movement to minimalism. I don't like minimalistic home design but clutter core is almost worse imho because it is just a cleaning nightmare. One of my top priorities with interior design is that the cleaning needs to be manageable. I don't want a huge row of shelves or a decorative table that is completely covered with small items that whose sole purpose purpose is collecting dust.

I agree about the couch. I have an antique couch in our bedroom, but it is just there temporarily until we renovate our downstairs. It does not sit at the end of the bed but upon a wall facing the bed. I notice that what it really does is collect clothes- so it is a good thing we are planning closets along that wall. On the other hand, next to our bed, is a giant arched window (floor to ceiling and then some). We have a 'meridienne' (chaise longue?). It is so lovely to sit in, because it is right next to this window and it is overlooking the river. On top of that -it is so comfortable). I think this is the exception for my additional seating in the bedroom, as my husband and I do use this seating area all the time.

I have wooden beads, my mum passed away and I took a branch from her fav tree and made beads out of it, the thing is they have this natural scent to them that reminds me of her and her garden that I can no longer visit 💕

That is so beautiful ❤️ I recently bought a tiny bottle of Shalimar, my mothers favorite perfume just so I can smell her every now and then 🥹 She’s alive, but I never get to see her b/c she’s married to my dad who is an abusive terrible human 😔 I may never see her alive again. But I do miss her garden and that soft hug with her powdery perfume.

We are out of state & he hasn’t let her come in 4 yrs now 😞 I wouldn’t voluntarily be around that man if you paid me. Lol. She is an adult and made her choice. All her children tried to get her out multiple times. But she’s chosen that life. So we see her when she gets away for a visit, but none of us want to be around the man that terrified and beat us all our childhoods

It's not to say for the children because you're all grown and don't need him anymore but I think she wants to safe her marriage and she's taking her vows very seriously but if someone abuse you and your children you need to get out. Trend #3, the couch in front of the bed thing, is like the telephone game of trends. It started with cedar chests, used for storing the quilts and blankets that would be used in wintertime on said bed. They kept them at the end of the bed because it was practical. Then more reliable and efficient indoor heating became a thing, and instead of mainly storage, the chest became a dressing chair for laying out clothing for the morning. So people adopted a bench or settee instead, because that also met this new purpose. Now it's a friggin couch. I dare someone to prove to me that this thing is used for anything other than piling laundry you don't want to fold or don't think is dirty enough to go in the hamper.

OMG, that is SO TRUE about the huge massive table centerpieces. I've always been tempted to try them but just never followed through because they're just not practical and when I sit down to eat at a table (assuming someone is joining me), I want to be able to speak with them without craning my neck. This is just a ridiculous trend I agree. Instead I have little short/squatty floral arrangements and it just works.

I’m a florist and there are so many things that make me feel vindicated in this video-particularly the extra tall vase with extra tall branches in the center of a table where no one can see across. Literally have had so many conversations with designers and wealthier clients about why that should go in a corner or, idk anywhere where you don’t need a clear sight line to have an actual warm conversation…plus, every video I’ve watched by you, the florals are so well done- a lot of would-be clients feel like they have to spring for luxe florals to make a space feel upscale, but just a well-placed and well-arranged bundle of grocery store florals can be the perfect touch (and maybe even a better fit for the space!)

I tried to do the extreme stoic minimal white thing in my bedroom & it made me so depressed. It felt so cold and just sad. Honestly sometimes at night it felt scary. Then I hung some of my favorite paintings and put my books back out and got a ton of plants & it was like night and day. It gave the room so much life and made me excited to wake up every morning & see my beautiful plants & treasured art first thing. So I totally agree with the last point.

I love this! It really makes a huge difference to add a bit of colour and make it a snug safe space. Be careful with real plants in the bedroom though, I thinj it's not great feng shui. It adds too much energy, and it might keep you from getting a proper rest

Enough plants make literally anything better. Anything. Not a good day? Throw a plant at it. Take a walk in the forest, do a gardening, re-pot a plant, if you have none of these head out to the garden center and Get A Plant. Very much not a plant person? grab a root-vegetable that you forgot about and stick that in the soil. As a fun bonus you'll have more root vegetable! Plants make everything better. Plants even make brutalist architecture better. (if you have enough of them)

I’m pretty new to the chanel, but I’m absolutely in love with you and your ways of delegating your views to the viewer! In the couch episode I laughed so hard, I cried! Called my daughter to watch it with me, we both loved the “spirit”😆. Glad I didn’t make any of those mistakes, even though I know I make plenty. But my house is cozy and welcoming even if overstuffed with personal favorites. The only thing I can add to the first episode about the weird couch trend right now is: what’s up with short (read “nonexistent”) head rests? I was recently in the home of a friend who has styled it in a visually beautiful way. However, it has the beads, the large table centerpiece, the white kitchen etc. It is lovely to look at, but not cozy and inviting. We have totally different styles. Mine is more eclectic and boho thrift store. out of necessity. I once told her that she has great style. Her response was...'I just buy things. You actually create.' My style is definitely a mix of things I personally find beautiful, intriguing, meaningful, etc. For the life of me.... The Beads though, but ESPECIALLY the linked wooden chains.... I just CAN'T!!! 😂, I finds beads of all sorts to be lovely, but I just don't like the trend of them strung, and draped over a bowl, table, etc! To each their own, but I'd rather use that sort of bead decor as kindling, and I'm allergic to trees. Thus, I can't be near fires, 😆!! Me and my mum are just like you - we love eclectic pieces and art and lots of throws/cushions and pieces of interest. @@bubblewrappd That's my fav style too, it's a safe haven of comfort!! I've had many people say how at ease they are at my house too. It makes me pleased to offer that feeling to others!! Right now, I'm living at my parents home, taking care of my Mom. She has dementia, and can't be alone. I take care of her, the household chores of the cooking and cleaning, etc, the errands, doctors, etc. So, I don't have it completely to my taste here, but I do in large influence the style. I try to find things that both stimulate, and comfort my Mom, especially. So, it might not always be exactly my taste, but so long as it evokes thought, or a good feeling, I'm in! My Dad, he just sees it all as unnecessary junk, lol. If it brings comfort, or beauty to the room, it's necessary to me!! I love decorating, and have to make more time for it soon. I'm glad some others see the value of creating a pleasant space! It DOES affect your mood, largely sometimes! I was recently reading about George Washington Carver, and was pleased to discover how he brought affordable paint to the poor farmers back in the day! It was called, Rich Colors for the Poor. I thought that was SO cool! Especially, how he showed former slaves, like himself, how decor could improve your life! I never recall learning before about his paint pairings on canvas, to help simplify the process to those new to home decor. He saw value, and added beauty, where others saw despair! A trend that I’m over is the constant need to “refresh” your spaces. I feel that all rooms in my home are constantly evolving and that’s great. However, this constant redoing of living spaces several times a year is nuts and not practical. I realize a lot of this is so people have content for their media platforms. But to totally get rid of all room accessories and replace them every few months isn’t practical. I’ve seen people put shiplap up, take shiplap down, paint the same wall black and then decide to abandon the whole look for cottage core. Find your own style and evolve it. It’s better for the planet and shows your viewers who you are not what the latest trends say you are. And, sick of “chopped” pillows. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest. 😊

I like the storage chest/bench at the end of the bed, because you can do more than one thing! You can use it to store your spare bedsheets/blankets, and maybe to put on your shoes, or to put down... idk, something you have to unpack to put away. You could even use it as the chair to your desk, if your room is smaller or arranged that way for some reason. But yeah, a full-on couch feels ridiculous. Also yes- the accessory on my eating table is a little tea tray thing with the honey jar plus the salt and pepper shakers. You can see everyone! The honey jar is pottery, locally made, and nicely glazed so it's visually interesting but not distracting! And yeah, I look at the non-cozy homes and think "but where does the dog bed go" and "that's going to get stained instantaneously." It's one reason I like that pseudo-cottagecore aesthetic, while that's also somewhat unrealistic, it at least feels like I can fry an egg and not freak out if oil spatters out of the pan. With the wooden beads, my mom is a former nurse and apparently they had something like that as an easy reference for how dilated a cervix was (measuring with fingers and comparing with the beads- 1 bead = 1 cm, 10 beads = fully dilated).

Re: Sofas at the ends of beds. So my inclination is to blame Air BnB for this. It created a sudden demand for guest rooms to also be living rooms, since guests and hosts want the option to give each other privacy. A clunky but kinda reasonable solution to a specific problem, that got photographed a bunch and ended up on people’s Pinterest boards and is now living feral.

I've seen benches & love seats @ the end of the bed before Air BnBs became popular; they were displayed in large master bedroom photos; not a tiny bedroom. I use a bench @ the end of my bed bc I need surface space to put my robe before I go to sleep - especially in winter- & where else I can put my bedding items when I'm changing bedsheets, comforter cases if not on that bench -my bedroom is medium size & I don't have seating area in it. So while I am against a full sofa I still use a bench for its function. My two cents.

I do the one with a million pillows. I absolutely LOVE it. 7 pillows on my bed, all are different colors and textures, some are different sizes. I call it my “pillow arrangement”. I put them in a copper wire basket (designated for pillows) when I need to get in the bed to keep them off the floor. My style is bold bright bohemian eclectic. Everything matches because nothing matches so it works. I love mixing textures, patterns and colors. As long as something is colorful (bold/bright, not mute/soft), wood, wicker, cork, or wire, it’ll work in my room. I buy things in singles (one of a kind type of vibe) versus doubles or triples like those that like things to be even and perfectly symmetrical. I like the organized chaos look. “Classily busy”

My husband sets my styling standard. He either allows or doesn't allow me to put things on tables. When I styled his bedside table I had to be SO careful. I found this *teeny tiny* little air plant in an *itty bitty* clay pot. I set it carefully in the back corner, then waited quietly for him to make up his mind. He folded his arms. Squinted. Frowned. Relaxed and sighed. Finally he said, "It's whatever." Woo hoo! High praise!! He loves it! lol Seriously, I've found that if he says no, he's right. Within a week I'll be pissed off at it myself. If he doesn't mind, it's livable. Sadly for my inner designer, not many things on coffee, end, or dining tables are truly livable for the long term. The one thing that works always are cut flowers in a vase. Why do they work? Because they die and go away rather quickly.

I actually love the color gray and I do like gray color-schemes in homes, but I do see how it can come off a certain way but I think the problem is that many people make it TOO neutral that it ends up looking depressing. I would do gray but add in color in my decor and furniture and add in different textures and softening things up with soft curtains and plants and whatnot. I have been in all gray homes that look so stark and bland because there are no warm and cozy elements to make the house feel like a home. There's nothing wrong with gray, it's just what you do with it.

I agree with most of the “don’t”s on Caroline’s list, except the armless sofa. While I wouldn’t want it as my main seating choice, I have an armless loveseat sized piece that works perfectly as extra non-bulky seating and also serves as a visual room divider to separate living from “dining” areas in my small, open floorplan apt. A second sofa with arms would have taken up too much space, and chairs floating in the middle of the floor would have looked dumb and wouldn’t not have visually divided the room effectively. Unexpectedly, the armless “loveseat” just fit the space perfectly and it’s pretty comfortable for non-lounging guests. It also creates a living area conducive to conversation, since it faces the main sofa ( which does have arms…and a few pillows :). Sometimes the don’ts are the perfect solution.

Finally someone talks about “fake”, “unrealistic” interior design in mainstream mags! I didn’t know how to put it until this video. The mainstream authorities on interior design, much like fashion, are not very useful for an average person looking to create a sanction of their own, which is what a home is for. Those staged photos are not how a typical home would look most of the time when there are actual people living in it. Like you have stressed many times, interior design needs to be functional and personal. How tiring it would be if your home is not an intimate place to live and feel “at home” in but just a vessel for you to take Instagram photos.

I did like the pillows on the bed idea, but you make so much sense about it. PS I don't have throw pillows on my bed, just the pillow I sleep on and the one I cuddle, very basic. The couch and bed equation I never got, but I always did like the bench idea and wanted one when I did have my own home. Those vase ideas have always been weird for me, I like nice small ones, yet I don't have any at home. I enjoyed seeing the throw pillows on couches, but I only have two on mine. I agree with you on all so far. I had expected some basic things you'd point out. PS the wooden beads did confuse me greatly, I had assumed they were scented or something.

Caroline, Please lobby to architects and house space designers!! My pet peeves: 1. Making laundry rooms a walk through from the garage, NO, I need a separate laundry room, and I like to hang many pieces of clothing to dry rather than put them in the dryer. 2. STOP putting the sink or the stove top into the island, for obvious reasons of dishwashing clutter and weird fans under the stove top.

In the photos that you showed, I saw two other trends that I can’t stand: 1) the “V” chop in the top middle of throw pillows….WHY???!!! I absolutely HATE that! I don’t know why, but it causes me anxiety when I see it. 2) Using books for decor, particularly when they are turned backwards to show the pages. Again….WHY??!! Books are for reading, People! Okay. Books bought just to be a prop, turned backwards, covered up all in one colour so they don't even show what the book even is about....Yeah that is a trend that is souless. But... as in my case, books you already own that have actual meaning for you but you're not going to want to read them everyday, plus keep them spine and cover on show too; not gonna lie, it's a great way to break up the levels on a display shelf.

I agree with you about everything! The beads I don’t mind (but also I’m not crazy about them, either), but everything else I am 100% on board with you about, and lots of your points I’ve been saying for years. I don’t want to have to move ten pillows off my bed before I can even lay down. I don’t want to have to move things before I use a space. I don’t want to feel like there’s no comfort and personality in my own home. If the couch doesn’t feel and look good for extended periods of time, has hard arms or none at all, and/or the back of the couch isn’t tall enough for me to rest my head on it unless I bend my neck backward at a 90° angle, I don’t want it. I’m new to your channel, but this video tells me I can trust you to give good home decor advice. Comfort + functionality will trump the pretty and inconvenient every time.

I love traditional/transitional. Soft color. Cozy. My decor is mostly good quality and last for decades. I just chalk painted a 9 foot custom couch I’ve had 30 plus years. I also added an actual painting of hollyhocks on the back cushions. Came out great (I’m a floral artist-78 years old)…..so fun.

When we first moved into our house in 2018 I painted everything gray. White trim. I reasoned that by going neutral I could add colorful decor and change it up whenever I wanted. After awhile I realized how sterile everything looked. It looked beautiful but didn't feel like home. And white trim shows EVERYTHING. Also I bought all of my decor from homegoods. Looked good, but wasn't personal. 5 years later most of the stuff that made my house look like a magazine is gone. I embrace cozy colors, wood, and items that mean something. Nothing matches and yet somehow goes together. Now I don't do anything to my house unless it'll be easy to clean/maintain and feels like home.

Thank you for exposing the wooden beads. Every time I saw pictures of them, i was overcome with this feeling that they needed to be in my house. Not a feeling that i actually wanted them in my house, but the feeling that i was doing something wrong by not having them in my house, and that once they were in my house i would be on the right track... What the hell was that?? This wasn't a conscious thought and i never bought any stupid wooden beads. I'm not sure what was possessing me in that moment but you have broken the spell.

From my experience working in luxury residential design in the past, I feel that these sofas at the end of the bed began with McMansions. Bedrooms were now being designed with HUGE propotions that people felt they needed to fill. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Poor architectural design perpetuates awkward interiors.

The beads trend started with an Instagram account that did missions work overseas and these women in the other country made the beads as their job to get out of poverty or other unseemly lifestyles and buying the beads helped support these women in crisis. The instagrammer not only had some beads and quite often showed how to display them on her page, but then asked all of her thousands of subscribers to support the ministry and it became a trend.

I agree with you on everything really except to add that pure down can be very comfortable. A Howard & Sons pure down cushion sofa is a comfortable sofa. I still dream of finding one at auction someday. Plus there are two types of comfortable sofas the kind that are comfortable when you are wearing a dress and heels and the kind that is comfortable when you are lounging eating ice cream and watch TV at 2 am. When you are wearing the dress you need a sofa that provides a lot of back support and keeps you upright and when you are lounging you need to feel sink back a little bit more. I agree on the cloud sofa though. It looks like it is going to be a hot mess most of the time and not all that comfortable. I love that you included a Rita Konig design in your photos of cozy and all her sofas are pure down cushion. I agree with you on spaces that are beautiful but not cozy as well, and it is worth noting that when we admire photos we are just looking at photos and not spaces. So many people don't seem to realize that there is a difference. Most of the time when we talk about interior design we are talking about how spaces photograph and not how they live.

6:23 My mum used to have wooden beads in our house in the 90s and she used it like potpurri. You can put essential oils on the beads and they emit a smell because of the porous wood. Not sure if that's how peeps are using it these days though

I must say, asside from billionaires, the trend has been to neutral tones and minimalism for so long, that by the time we moved to our new appartement we wanted something clean looking, because I am one hell of a thrifter so we couldn't add more mess, and since the place is small we kept most things white. But I realized during the pandemic that nothing screamed cozyness or joy (despite my obsession with praticality and function). We started adding color and I kid you not, my moral lifted up instantly. I can't believe I deprived myself of color because I got brainwashed (pun intended) by glamour shots of bare interiors. Thank you so much for this video, Caroline!

Any centerpiece that is at all inconvenient drives me insane. Our rented vacation home this past summer had a big leaf-shaped driftwood basket filled with some sort of spiked balls in varying colors and sizes as the the centerpiece on the dining room table. It looked nice, but took up most of the space and every little bump on the table would topple the basket, sending little bundles of ouch at some unlucky individual. The basket found a new home atop the refrigerator for the week, where it was secured in a shopping bag to prevent mishap. I painstakingly placed it back where it was before we set off for home, but I still can't help but think that it probably exploded in a shower of the devil's wiffle balls all over the floor from the vibration caused when I closed the door behind me.

The curved white room you showed (that you hated) with bare walls + a fireplace was absolutely stunning! (3.) The “cloud” couch is for a really big family room. ***Most people end up breaking up the pieces into smaller groups, sometimes, with a small table at each. (4.) I’ve never seen prayer beads as decor before. (5.) Large/Tall items on tables, I’ve heard lots of complaints about. (6.) I went gray - gray BLACK! Behr’s Antique Tin is a beautiful, dark, rich shade. I doubled down and got 3 gallons. 1 in satin and 2 in matte. They are great to mix flat walls with satin trim in the same shade. Even stencil one over the other. I added gold accents and it’s freakin amazing! 😻
