I am budgeting a grand for a tool box that I can use to consolidate a couple of older, cheaper boxes, and this one is at the top of my list. I was also looking at the larger HF ones, but just the base is more than I have budgeted, and the coupons usually don't apply to tool storage anyway. I have never seen anyone actually like that wooden drawer cover. Thanks for giving us a tour and sharing what it's like to live with this box for a while. This is still at the top of my list.

Man, I thought I was ocd with my tools and chests. For a sub $1000 box you won’t find better. I had a $7000 snap on box when I was in high school that got chipped, scratched and smudged just like the husky box. At the end of the day, the higher end husky boxes are built really well and being a mechanic is not the cleanest of jobs. Try to just enjoy tool organization without being overly obsessed about wiping down the drawer handles and you’ll find that a once a month clean out will keep things in order. Friendly advice from a fellow ocd mechanic. 👌🏼

@Sid The sloth My US General 44" rolling cart is made out of thicker metal compared to Husky or Craftsman tool chests. The caster wheels are better on US General too. Husky uses soft close rails, that's why they feel different.

@Sid The sloth Some people are saying US General 44" body is 16 gauge and i think the drawers are 18 gauge. If your in the market for a tool chest, go check them out in person before deciding. I like the build quality of US General 44inch over Husky or Craftsman.

I had an older 40 inch wide Husky (bought in 1999) and used it at home for seventeen years. Although it did the job of storing my hand tools and wasn't abused the best thing I liked about mine is when the guy off Craigslist showed up, paid me and hauled it off. Being a tool freak with a ex-wife from the core of the earth my replacement was a Harbor Freight 56 inch top and bottom chest that I absolutely love. If it weren't for the ex I would've made the transition to HF many years ago. Anyway I've added another HF 26 inch bottom chest along with 16 wide side mounted box and would suggest anyone looking for a good box for the money to take a good look at Harbor Freight boxes before Husky. BTW, like you, im just a guy that works on my own stuff at home.

I don’t get in harbor fright often but was just recently and the boxes do look good, this box just fit my needs and matched the cabinet setup and shelving that I already have installed from husky but as always always looking for something different

@@Mattsneedforspeed i understand completely and the experience I had with my Husky could be the time frame (99). However the plastic drawer detents lasted about a year and they didn't have soft close so you had to be careful closing the drawers, to hard they would bounce open. But you're right, it's what fits individual needs.

@@r.n.6515 Husky quality is nothing like HF US General. I wish US General would come out with different models that had deeper drawers.

@@Sim-633 after using my collection of HF boxes I'm extremely happy. Happy to the point I'm giving my 56" top and bottom combo to my son and upgrading to the 72" bottom box. However I wouldn't recommend the 26" bottom, there are too many drawers that are shallow, I'd say spend the few extra dollars for the 44" if you can and have the room. It works for me since that box stores rarely used tools but for anyone starting out I'd say go up one size.

Do you think you'd have a problem standing your sockets up in the big top drawer on the bottom half of the tool box?
@DanielSmith-yk4ds
@DanielSmith-yk4ds 2 жыл бұрын
That's what I do. My sockets absolutely slay single roller drawers lol and I have enough to fill the long because of Euros and diesel. So I use the slideless top cab for em. Roller love long time.

Was this shipped to you in a box or did you get it from your local HD store? Every single one I looked at locally have several scratches from being moved around and people constantly touching them I guess.

It was not boxed and I picked up at my local store, I was in earlier that day and was told they needed to get one down from up top so that evening I ordered on line for pickup the next day save some time well it was assembled as u see it waiting up front made a nightmare to load and transport but I did look it over for damage before accepting it, I ask for a discount if it has damage and that’s all that is in stock but it’s still a good functioning box to this day

Those cheap & loose drawer handle end caps _can_ be made to do their basic job, but they're definitely a poor design. Husky (or should I say Geelong, the real manufacturer?) should've used a more flexible, rubbery material instead of hard plastic with cheap ribs. I thought of a couple ways to address that issue on my own Husky toolbox. Some of the end caps were so loose, they wouldn't stay put at all. The first thing I thought to try was injecting some silicone into the handle and reinstall the caps. Or better yet, one could remove the drawer and lay it on a work surface upside down, for more thorough access and adhesion. In a pinch (no silicone) even hot glue might do the trick, though I imagine it would be more prone to cracking & letting loose due to flexing of the drawer handle. However, on my box, I went another way, due to just how terribly loose my caps were. I used a smooth-jawed parallel-closing pair of pipe pliers -- with electric tape applied to the jaws, to avoid scratching anything. I removed the caps, then gently-but-firmly squeezed the first couple of inches of the handle-channel to tighten up the space where the cap fits in, by just a millimeter or two. After a good coaxing, the caps are a lot more secure. By the by, it's really only the underlying steel that really needs the squeeze, so if you want to (to protect it), consider removing the aluminum beauty strip before using the pliers. Mine slid right off and back on.

The only thing I don't like about this chest is the power supply cords are Orientated in such a way that you can't plug both of them into the same outlet.
