Hi Everyone!! At about 16:52 I start talking about container planting bulbs. The point I was trying to make was that, here in the Northeast, our winters can be cold and wet. If the containers don't drain well, there's a possibility that the bulbs can rot, and therefore not give you any blooms. This is why I choose to wait until late winter to finally pot up my bulbs for spring blooms. I do keep them in a dark cold environment so that they do not sprout prematurely. A dark unheated garage, basement, or in the fridge all work! Hope this helps explain that. Here's the link for my vid for how I do my tulips in pots: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5CblotnhMeCoNU

I'm a member of the iris society, as a note on Bearded Iris... the roots will most likely be pretty dead in the package. Don't worry. Once planted properly, they'l generate new ones quickly. Wait until the heat is over to plant, end of September in hotter areas. They're beautiful, enjoy!

Hi there! I hear that often. I'm sorry yours isn't as good. We're pretty lucky with a large and well stocked homedepot. I think its because its located between two very populated towns, as well as a large city. I also love to seek out other home depots in my travels to see how they differ. Just a thought that maybe if your out by a store other than your usual, to maybe pop in and see what they offer.

Hello my friend. I have a home depot near me and the fall bulbs are out here as well but not as much variety as you have. Although that being said maybe we will get some more. Who knows. I have extended part of my garden and I am looking for some different bulbs then just the tulips and Daffs that I have already have. I will keep you posted as to what I plant. Anyways enjoy shopping and have a wonderful day.

Hi there!! Of the Lowes & Home Depot I visit most often, my Home Depot had 4 times the amount of bulbs. They had a really great selection this year. If looking for something different than tulips and daffs, you could try grape hyacinths (perrenial), crocuses, dutch iris, and snowdrops, Thanks for watching! 🌱

Another vote for Pink Impression tulips! They are reliable, strong against wind and long-lasting. I thought I didn’t care for Darwin style tulips (I usually buy doubles) but these are great and equally beautiful once opened up. And you can’t go wrong with Angelique tulips! My favourite pink double I planted last year though was Pink Size.

I am not a fan of red flowers either. Though last year my daughter picked out red tulips for the garden and I have to say that I LOVE them! With so much still looking dead to have the bright red pop is very exciting. I live in Central CT and like yours, our winters are long. To have fresh green growth of foliage, with some yellow dafs and blue hyacinth does it for me.

Oh my goodness I was just at my Home Depot and I didn’t see any bulbs! I’ll have to go back and take a look! I wish tulip bulbs would naturalize better so I tend to lean more towards daffodils since I know they’ll come back really well year after year.

Another amazing tour! Really great advice about not planting the daffodils in rows - thank you so much for sharing this! I made this mistake with my tulips last year. I'm so excited to try growing them for the first time this year! When the time comes around, I would love to see your process of planting bulbs. I'm struggling to figure out how exactly to plant bulbs around existing perennials in the garden (and making sure that I'm staggering them correctly for maximum bloom time!).

I grew Salome last year, it's beautiful. Planted grape hyacinth in front of apricot colored daffodils & it was gorgeous! Even if you don't think you like red tulips, try Il de France. The cardinal red blooms will win you over! Re: planting tulips in containers: "Nature affects bulbs more when they are planted in containers because they are not surrounded by the mass of the ground to buffer extremes. A few suggestions will guarantee success in containers. Water containers in dry periods and when flowering. In prolonged wet periods, cover containers to shield from excess rain. During extreme cold periods, move containers to a garage or some other sheltered area." I plant tulips in containers at the end of Sept here in the wet PNW and leave them on our covered porch and it works great. I think it's best to get the bulbs planted asap whether in the ground or a container.
@HookedandRooted2 жыл бұрын
Hi Laura! Thank you for sharing your experience about Salome! Makes me more excited to grow them. Oh that sounds lovely paired with grape hyacinths!! Maybe I'll give that a go! I'm thinking maybe even in containers. I think red tulips are beautiful, perhaps I just feel they clash with all the pink I have in the garden. But I've seen red with purple and it's beautiful. It makes complete sense to plant them out in containers right away. My concern has always been the bulbs rotting in the containers from being wet and soggy over winter. Another reason is I typically use my front porch pots for Christmas greens also. Therefore my pots are in use. But yes, I agree in a covered area it could certainly work. Thanks for sharing 🌱

I love this video! I was able to learn about the varieties of tulips and bearded Iris which I really like and will be planting some in my new beds. I'd like to plant tulips in a container. I live in Illinois Zone 6. Temperatures are still hot. Where should I keep the bulbs from now till end of February for container planting?
@HookedandRooted2 жыл бұрын
I kept mine in a paper grocery bag, in my unheated garage. You want them to stay really cool (so I put them where outside draft gets in near garage door). You also don't want any light to get to them. If you have the space you could put the closed grocery bag (double Bagged for extra light blocking, into the fridge if not cool enough in a basement, shed, or garage
@brightma12 жыл бұрын
@@HookedandRooted yes, it's still very hot inside the garage. It's dark but hot! Not thrilled about having bulbs in my fridge from now till February. I may just keep a small bag of bulbs. Thanks again for the information! I appreciate it

Are there any suggestions for how to plant in a bed with perennials so that you benefit from these bulbs as early bloomers and perennials for later in the season?
@HookedandRooted2 жыл бұрын
Daffodils need to keep their foliage for a while after blooming, so that they get energy for the bulb to produce a bloom next year. So you'll want to plant those around or under shrubs that having leaved out yet, or perrenials that have foliage to disguise or hide the foliage as it ages. The same with alliums, as far as the foliage. I have bulbs planted around perrenials. It works well.

I would love to try bulbs this season but I’m so confused. I’m in Zone 9b. If I bought these, do I need to pre-chill them all in the fridge for a few weeks? If so, do I pre-chill all bulbs or specific kinds? After it blooms and dies off, do I dig them up & store them/chill them to grow again (minus the tulips since it’s a one time use)? Do I plant them at different times if I were to put some in the ground & in containers?
@HookedandRooted2 жыл бұрын
Hi Karen! I'm in zone 6. For us the only bulbs I keep in a cool environment are the ones I plan to container grow. However, my friend Janey @digplantwaterrepeat has some experience with growing tulips in zone 9 as she's in California. I do know you would need to prechill them, however I'm not sure for how long, snd when the appropriate time would be for you to plant them. Which months are your gardens going a bit dormant? I'm guessing that would be the time to plant. Here for us, it's about mid to late October and into November to plant bulbs. Hope this helps.

@@HookedandRooted I guess so, yes. Similar to paperwhites, but like you said, paperwhites (narcissus) don't have an attractive smell to some people. Jonquils do smell good! Tulips are my favorite flower. Unfortunately, the numerous deer that pass through each day love them too, so I don't grow them. Cut tulilps in a vase is the best I can do. Sometimes though, my cats will mess with those. The universe is trying to destroy my relationship with tulips.
@HookedandRooted2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kristy! Same here, lots and lots of deer. I try to spray my tulips at least 1 time a week during their growing season. It helps, but I have to be diligent. Sometimes I'm up for the task, other times not. I find in pots works well as they mostly stay away from the porch 🤞
