My daffodils and iris have been disappearing compared to years past, so think I'll head over to Lowes and some more bulbs. Although I also ordered some bulbs from Gilbert H. Wild & Son too. Thanks for sharing that we need to check those bulbs for health before purchasing. It's so sweet that you plant surprise bulbs for friends. Great idea!

@@shesamadgardener If you are familiar with P. Allen Smith and Moss Mountain Farm, he gets all of his daffodils and iris bulbs from them. I got several iris and daylily bulbs from this last year. They we're all excellent.

Thanks for the info! Will be checking out those irises but it seems all of the big box stores have the same ones. ☹️ Walmart did have a few more varieties. Might have to add some daffodils. That seems like a great price on the big bag. TY!

I want to try a jeweled lawn (mostly with snow drops, daffodils and maybe tulips), but I understand we need to allow several weeks post bloom for the foliage to die back before we can mow over it. Do you think grass would grow too long too fast to achieve that or do daffodils bloom so early that it would work out? Since I don't see jeweled lawns very often, I'm thinking it's because of the mowing thing.

Don’t know where you live but here in Wisconsin I have over 200 daffodils in the backyard as well as thousands of scellas and some snow drops and crocuses. I don’t mow the daffodil section until the leaves have dried out/died and yes the grass gets high but maybe 4”… no problem for me and my cheap-y mower (gas-powered, hand push). Do it… worse thing would be you mow at 2-3 inches of grasses- I believe it will just mean the daffodils don’t expand underground as fast.

I think it would depend on the type of grass. But I’ve seems lots of grass fields with naturalized bulbs and gorgeous pathways through them … love cottage core!

My Ice Follies and Ice King daffodils have been coming back for years in 8b Austin, Texas. In Ttexas, small daffodils are traditionally called narcissus. In other places daffodil is the English name and the scientific name is narcissus. Go figure. Popular flowers often have half a dozen common names or more.

How do you know how long the flower will Bloom? I am looking for something that will bloon more than a couple of weeks

+Tysha Ward each are different and most won’t bloom for very long to their nature. It’s best two choose 3 different types of bulbs that bloom one right after the other and that will give you color for longer.

Those bulbs from big box stores are very often mislabeled. I've bought bulbs so many times that turned out to be the wrong variety. I've learned my lesson and will buy bulbs from reputable mail order companies from now on. Nothing like waiting for months for flowers you don't even like!
