Home Depot Rental Trailer - 5 Things I Dislike About It

Here's 5 things I hate about the surplussed (retired from the fleet) Home Depot Rental trailer I purchased in 2019.
Overall it's a good trailer but it does have a few shortcomings, which I describe in this video.
Why do I hate the tongue jack? It's short and doesn't allow dropping the trailer far enough to hitch up to my UTV. To hitch it to my UTV, I have to lift the trailer, swivel the jack or remove it and then place the trailer coupler on the hitch of my UTV.
I replaced the jack with the shortest on I could find, but that didn't solve the problem.

Seems like minor issues, my grip is the interior width because my zero turn mower has a 60" deck. A suggestion is to not use plywood but a large tarp by tucking it inside the trailer and up the gate (secured with bungee cords) when dealing with pine needles, it's what I do with my larger 6' x 10' utility trailer, besides you increase the weight of the gate.

I see you missed a pine needle. 4:00 It was hiding beside that tag light wire. Actually, that standard expanded metal is the best to have on a drive-up ramp gate. As far as the frame acting as a ground wire, that is better because that is one less wire to deal with if it gets hung up on something at the dump. If you are worried about it getting corroded and losing the ground, redo the connection, and before installing the ring connector, put a dab of de-electric grease under it. I will agree about the pivot jack. Never liked them but, I can understand why they would use them on a rental trailer. The worst type is the ones that just clamp on as you see on boat trailers. They may be good there but not on utility trailers. Overall that is a nice trailer.

they do the ground through the chassis because it usually gets the ground from the tow vehicle through the trailer hitch bolted to the vehicles frame

Chassis ground through the hitch is not how tow vehicles are wired. The trailer connector on the tow rig has a ground wire in it - the white wire. Trailer manufacturers are basically trying to save money by not hard wiring all the lights with a real ground wire connected to the trailer pigtail.

It's never grounded through the hitch. The rusty dirty metal would not create a consistent, reliable connection. Look at any trailer connector wiring diagram and you'll see a ground pin designated.

They won't transfer it, this is because there's a lot of paperwork plus transport fees involved.

Do these have brakes on them? My legacy can tow up to 3k gvwr with brakes but im having a hard time finding as lightweight of a trailer that can has close to a 3k gvwr with brakes

They don't have brakes. It's very rare for a single axle trailer to be built with brakes, but these trailers can have brakes added to them. The flange on the axle is set up for adding brakes. I've considered adding brakes to my trailer.

What do you recommend for grounding if not on the trailer chasis?

Dedicated Ground Wire from the trailer plug to all the lights. There's already a ground wire in the vehicle trailer plug and the trailer plug on the trailer, so that's what should be used.

Yes, I intend to use mine to haul my motorcycle. I added more D-Rings along the side of the trailer, further towards the front.

These are literally uhaul trailers but under a different logo

No, they are not U-Haul trailers with a different sticker. U-Haul builds their own trailers and they are always made of galvanized steel. The Home Depot rental trailers are always made by either Ohio Steel or Best Trailer Manufacturing, at lease that's what I've seen at all three stores I frequent in the PNW area.

You explained your reasons for not liking each of the 5 features that you don't like, except for the swing away jack. You stated, "I just hate it." Buy you don't say why you "hate it". Would you specify what it is about the jack that makes you "hate it"?
