Over 3500 New Zealanders served in Vietnam between 1964 and 1972 -- this country's longest and most controversial war effort of the twentieth century. Kiwis were in the air, in offices and operating theatres, in the hospital wards, tunnels and jungles of Vietnam during the near-decade of New Zealand's allegiance with the US-led coalition. In this film, produced from interviews and material gathered for the Vietnam War Oral History Project (www.vietnamwar....), three New Zealand veterans -- nursing sister Daphne Shaw, rifleman Bruce Knight, and helicopter pilot Brian Senn -- reflect on their service in Vietnam and the impact it's had on their lives.

As a Brit, I am acutely aware of the New Zealands involvement in Veitnam. The lack of acknowledgement from society, media and the like, reminds me of the Forgotten 14th Army during the 2nd World War to which Kiwis and Aussies were heavily involved. The ANZAC's "bloody good soldiers thankfully".

I had occasion to bump into n oz vet that was in Long Tan ... at the Wanaka Airshow. He put me right about the kiwi's contribution to the battle of Long Tan. As far as he was concerned the NZ artillery have earnt any beer they drink.

Did you guys make any movies? I've seen The Odd Angry Shot but that was the Aussies.

No. NZ'ders would've looked on that with disdain, disgust and anger back then. It was hugely frowned upon to make movies about tragic events and considered extremely disrespectful to those who had lost loved ones.

It wasn't New Zealand's war. It was as normal a U.S. war. Why, because US didn't agree on the type of government. In reality are the worse than ours. In many instances they look after their people better. Makes a change for the US in this war, it wasn't about resources for US advantage this time. Modern dat reality, WW1, WW2, both for dominance. Now US, under cover for dominance. US isn't happy with being equal, they have to be number 1, Their own words

As a dopey English guy, aware, but not actually aware of the NZ..and Oz soldiers being sent to Vietnam, this past few years, since I turned 60 I have read all there is to read about the Anzacs who served in Vietnam. The Anzac nurses….not that they will ever admit, but them girls really were irreplaceable for the troops. To have a warm, kind hearted nurse taking care of you…. That’s akin to your Mother being there taking care of you….Dont forget, Soldiers are tough as nails, but soft as sh*t when it comes to needing their Mothers to take care of them. Same goes for the Medivacs…those guys went into the very area’s where others feared to tread. There are no words to describe their levels of courage and bravery. I will never forget your courage Anzacs, neither will I ever forget what those gutless politicians have done, and continue to do. Until ordinary folk tell these gutless politician scum that what they do is never acceptable, they will just continue lining their pockets with our tax cash without a care.
