The song is a dedication/remembrance/tribute to three musicians that died in a plane wreck on February 3, 1959 those killed were Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper). The day the music died.. Buddy Holly was just recently married (the widowed bride).. that's why the song "gets dark" as you mentioned..

Adam Rupp (beat boxer/tenor) started the group in 2000 with his brother Chris Rupp (baritone) who left the group in 2016. Rob Lundquist (sweet tenor/beard & glasses) joined the group in 2008. Austin Brown (high tenor) and Tim Foust (bass with a 5 octave range) both joined the group in 2012. I loved your facial expressions. Not over the top. I saw it in the eyes 👀 when Tim started singing his verse. You had to control that urge to pause & exclaim “What?!” They all have amazing voices & vocal ranges but TIM 🤯. Once you listen to HF, you’re hooked.

I knew you'd love this version! Everyone was represented in this (Don, followed by Adam Chance (who does bass when Tim is singing solos), followed by Austin, followed by Rob, followed by Tim, with Don wrapping it up... all kept in time by the human drum kit, Adam Rupp - who also has an amazing tenor voice). One of the reasons for the "boxes" was that this was made during the pandemic and they were all separate. Another suggestion is Home Free's cover of the Crosby, Stills & Nash song "Helplessly Hoping". And to really get an example of Tim's 5 octave range, check out his solo of the Frankie Valley song "Will You Still Love Me / Stay"... you WILL be blown away! for Home Fee Christmas, I highly recommend "Mary Did You Know".

Home Free doesn’t do covers, they do UPGRADES!! The beat boxer is Adam Rupp, he has won the world wide competition twice, he’s from Minnesota. Adam Chance (goes by “Chance” for less confusion), he’s the baritone/bass & covers bass when Tim sings lead, he’s the guy in the hat & he’s from lower Alabama. Austin Brown the is red head high tenor & he’s from southern Georgia but he was trained & can sing without his “twang”, when he needs to. Tim Foust is the super bassman, but has a 5 octave range & he is from southeast Texas. Rob Lundquist (glasses & beard) is the lead tenor and he is from Minnesota too. The guys do their own original songs besides covers. Tim & Austin write quite a few songs in collaboration with other friends. Their Christmas songs are not to be missed! You should check them out!!

This was done right at the end of the Lockdowns so they filmed some of the parts in different places. Love this remake of this classic song. Can't believe it came out 50 years ago. Don McLean still has a good voice for his age. And love hearing all the guys take a turn in a verse. Poor Adam had to do such a long stretch of beatboxing but he nailed it. Think the song is about 8 min. long. Don McLean received his Hollywood Star on the Walk of Fame recently & Home Free was invited to sing a portion of this song there. What an honor for them. "American Pie" pays tribute to the loss of 3 legends who died so young (Buddy Holly, Richie Valens & The Big Bopper). A lot of references in the song are made to many artists from the early days of music including Elvis, Janis Joplin, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Byrds & others.

It’s an older video but you REALLY need to hear their Do You Hear What I Hear. Chance isn’t in it. When it was recorded the beat boxer’s brother was still with the group. The song is not only a treat for your ears but the setting is simply visually stunning. It’s the whole package as a Christmas song.

The first Home Free singer Adam Chance is the guy who opened and closed Man of Constant Sorrow with his throat singing instrument sounds. He does a lot of instrument sounds and he sings bass when Tim sings lead. He generally sings baritone, but he can also sing tenor. I am one of the subscribers who recommended that you react to this version of Don McLean's American Pie. There are several points that I would like to make about this version and maybe answer some of your questions. First of all, Don McLean, who is now in his 70's sounds amazing and is still touring. He came to Home Free to do this collaboration because he has seen others combine with them and they sounded fanstastic. If you want to check out another great collaboration, check out "Elvira" with the Oak Ridge Boys. 2. The "Man in the Hat" name is Adam Chance and he is the newest member of the group. He goes by Chance because the group already had one member named Adam, Adam Rupp, the beat boxer extraordinaire. Chance is a natural baritone, with a great range. He takes over for Tim in singing bass when Tim goes to lead. He also can go up to cover the tenor range also. He also helps with some of the beat boxing and sound effects. 3. Tim Fouts, the bass singer has a 5-octave range, which is amazing. He has recorded a record on his own of Doo-Wop songs where he sings all of the lead and harmony parts. He has a couple of these videos on KZbin. 4. Rob, the tenor with the heavy beard and glasses and Austin, the other tenor, have recorded a video that is titled " Two Country Singers try to Sing Opera" and sing a fantastic version of Nessum Dorma that you ought to check out too. 5. The group also has a funny side, to go along with their serious work. Christmas songs like "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer" and "Christmas Cheer" are both hilarious. They also have a couple of medlies out that are funny too, such as "The Butts Remix" and the "Sea Chanty Medley" have great singing and harmonies, but also show the guys' wacky side. With all of the songs that I have mentioned, I have just scratched the surface of the group. I am very glad that you found them and are taking the trip down this rabbit hole.

This was definitely an awesome collaboration of Home Free and Don McLain! From what I understand Don reached out to HF wanting to make this video together for his song's 50th anniversary. Of course they were not going to turn down that opportunity lol Home Free has so many songs to choose from, you can't really go wrong with any one of them. My suggestion for another great HF song and video to react to is Listen to the Music, originally done by The Doobie Brothers. This one came out this year by HF and let me tell you, I never would have guessed that Home Free could get any better as they are already perfect but it's true and this video proves it! I also really hope that you check another one called Cover me up, Chance sings the lead in this one and does a beautiful job with it. Also the video is awesome with a special surprise at the end. I did a paper for my Creative Writing 101 class in the 1st year of college. Looking up these tidbits was super interesting... 1. ‘Drove My Chevy To The Levee But The Levee Was Dry’ There was an advertisement for Chevrolet sang in 1953 by Dinah Shore who was a top-charting female vocalist of the 40s and 50s. The fact it was now dry refers to the change in the social climate in the 60s compared to the 50s. 2. ‘Singin' This'll Be The Day' - in the chorus Likely refers to Buddy Holly's song "That'll Be the Day." 3. ‘But February Made Me Shiver’ Of course refers to the deaths of Buddy Holly, along with singers the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens, and pilot Roger Peterson, perished in a plane incident February 3, 1959. Their small aircraft went down on a snowy late night after a concert in Clear Lake, IA. (Made me shiver - plane crashed in a blizzaed_ 4. ‘With Every Paper I'd Deliver / Bad News On The Doorstep / I Couldn't Take One More Step’ McLean worked as a newspaper delivery boy. Also, the Warren Commission showed no real explanation to the event. 17. ‘And While Lennon Read A Book On Marx’ The popular theory is that he's singing about the Beatles becoming more political with their music as tensions soared in the '60s. The Beatles, adored by American youth, were deemed inappropriate by older generations who thought their music was too rowdy. Also, the Beatles released songs like "Revolution" in 1968, whose message is in line with the Communist writer Karl Marx, known for The Communist Manifesto.

A fallout shelter is a euphemism for a drug treatment center, which one of the band members checked into after being caught with illicit substances. 22. ‘Eight Miles High And Falling Fast’ Eight Miles High is the title of a 1966 album by The Byrds. It is considered one of the first real trippy records. The sound of the album was influenced by plenty of experimentation with acid. 23. ‘It Landed Foul On The Grass’ Referencing the counterculture's overt use of the weed. 24. ‘With The Jester On The Sidelines In A Cast’ In 1966, Bob Dylan (the Jester), was in a very bad motorcycle accident which had him laid up and in a cast. He didn't want to go to a hospital so he moved in with small town doctor, Doctor Ed Thaler and his family, staying in the third-floor bedroom of their home, until he healed. 25. ‘While Sergeants Played A Marching Tune’ The Beatles released their album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" in 1967. It was an album where they changed their style making traditional "rock n roll". Experimenting with different soundscapes, introducing instruments such as brass horns and sitars. 26. ' 'Cause The Players Tried To Take The Field / The Marching Band Refused To Yield’ Talking about the protest movement that seemed to peak in the late '60s and early '70s, from Chicago protests at the Democratic National Convention to the one at Kent State in Ohio where the National Guard opened fire on a bunch of students. 27. ‘Oh, And There We Were, All In One Place’ Woodstock. The 1969 music festival in Bethel, NY, which brought together more than 400,000 people in one weekend. The album sold poorly, so this could be read as an insult to the Stones for not coming up with a good comeback to the Beatles' album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". 29. ‘Cause Fire Is The Devil's Only Friend’ The Devil seen to be represented by the Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger. The Rolling Stones music potraying rebellion and estrangement, and the pull away from a more innocent time perceived earlier in the '50s and early '60s music as well as the world in general. 30. ‘No Angel Born In Hell / Could Break That Satan's Spell’ "Angel" refering to the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club, which started a riot at the 1969 Altamont Free Concert in California. They were hired to provide security during a performance by the Rolling Stones, and an 18-year-old Black man was stabbed by a member of the motorcycle group (some say for trying to pick up on a white girl). The events of the day are considered by some to be the day the "free love" movement ended. 31. ‘I Met A Girl Who Sang The Blues’ The "girl" could be Janis Joplin, the rock singer with a very bluesy voice who perished from taking illicit substances in 1970. Her hits "Piece of My Heart" and "Me and Bobby McGee" were considered anthems for the hippie generation. 32. 'I Went Down To The Sacred Store / Where I'd Heard The Music Years Before / But The Man There Said The Music Wouldn't Play’ Don McLean is possibly talking about the loss of interest in '50s music at record stores. When he released the song in 1971, perhaps he was suggesting no one cared about music from this bygone era anymore. 33. ‘And In The Streets The Children Screamed’ In recent years leading up to the song's creation, thousands of young people across the country were involved in various protest movements, which led to confrontations with law enforcement or other groups. 34. 'And The Three Men I Admire Most / The Father, Son, And The Holy Ghost' Since Don McLean was raised Catholic, bringing religion in at the end of the song makes sense. The sacred holy trinity he speaks of, however, catches "the last train for the coast," likely a sign McLean believes America lost its moral foundation in 1959, the year of Buddy Holly's plane crash.

Chance, the guy in the hat, does the bass when Tim sings lead. He is also often paired with the tenors, Rob and Austin, on other songs. You can always tell when Chance or Tim sings bass. Chance was the bass in his prior group. His low voice allows Tim to sing more lead.

I subscribed to your channel for one reason - to watch your journey with Home Free. They are arguably the best acapella group on the planet. It's amazing how much talent they have and believe me, you have just begun. I agree that you should wait until you are comfortable with your knowledge of the group before you react to "Mayday." I would recommend "The Driver," "Cover Me Up" (which features Chance as the lead), "Helplessly Hoping," or "Catch Me If You Can." For something that showcases their sense of humor, I would recommend "The Butts Medley," or "All About The Base."

Such a good rendition. Don sounded great for 75! I loved the boxes. They reminded me of shadow boxes you keep your memories in. This was during Covid so they weren’t even together. Yeah, Tim has amazing range. The singer with the hat was Chance (he’s new to the group since 2016). Chance is the baritone/bass and he’s wonderful. Try I Can’t Outrun You, Helplessly Hoping , Yours, to hear more from him. I believe Don invited Home Free to join him when he got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Pretty cool. Good reaction!

Loved watching you sway in unison! While Tim Foust was singing his verse, Chance (who sang the first verse) was taking over the bass. If you really want to hear his range, check out his solo DooWop songs. He has videos out for four of those songs on his solo channel - Come Go WIth Me, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow/Stay, In My Room, and Since I Don't Have You. Austin Brown and Adam Chance both have solo channels, too

You girls need to go to Tim's youtube channel and check out him doing "Since I Don't Have You" it's a solo but he has layered himself singing everthing-just take a deep breath before you start it-is a cover of the Skyliners hit that you, Mom, may have heard way back in the day. Tim foust has a range like you wouldn't believe. You need to react to his Stay/Will you still love me tomorrow song. Also this was done during the Pandemic so none of them was together at that time. That is why the Boxes or frames. Also The Group began as a Rock n Roll band until they were on the Talent show and the Producer said they needed a C&W group and convinced them to sing Country and western.

Adam Rupp (the beatboxer) and his brother Chris (Baritone who wears a cowboy hat in a lot of their earlier songs) started Home Free around 2000. They added Rob (Tenor with the bushy beard who is also a master whistler) a few years later. Then the convinced Tim (bass, but up into tenor range as well) to sing with them. They met Austin (high tenor, kind of looks like "country Jesus") on a cruise ship they were singing on but didn't have a spot for him. Either a year or a bit less, later their tenor from that time left to be with his family and Austin joined. They went on the show The Sing Off right after that and won. A few years later Chris Rupp decided he wanted to go solo and helped them pick Adam Chance (hat guy here and called Chance because they already had an Adam ) as his replacement. Adam was singing as a bass with his previous group but can get into tenor range as well. For Christmas, I'd suggest Oh Holy Night or Marry Did You Know. Snow Globe is a great original that Tim wrote but it might be good to save that for after Mayday. Their cover of Folsom Prison Blues features Tim and Chance on lead and is very nice, though not a Christmas song.

The guy "In the hat" is Adam Chance... They call him Chance because the beat boxers name is also Adam... He is Adam Rupp. The other guys are , Bass.. Tim Faust, Lead tenor.. Austin Brown and Second tenor.. Rob Lundquist. All of these guys including the beat boxer can sing! Please react to "Children go where I send thee" They sung this with the late great Kenny Rodgers and it is fantastic! There is a different "Guy in a hat" in that song though because the beat boxers brother "Chris Rupp" was still with the group then and Chance came in when Chris left. The "High pitch" stuff you were talking about is Austin doing his thing :-) The beat boxer also does high notes when needed.

Adam Chance was the singer that didn't have a solo section in Man of Constant Sorrow. If I remember correctly he has more big part in their covers of Mary Did You Know (it's a Christmas song, perfect for this time of year), Brothers in Arms and Folsom Prison Blues. All definitely worth reacting to.
