Home Free is the best--period. Chance doing the jaw harp sound really sets the "bluegrass" stage for this song's story. Tim's bass line completely grounds the harmonies and Adam's voice percussion simply cannot be beat. This performance highlights a lot of Home Free's strengths although they also handle just about any other genre amazingly ❣️🎼🥰🎶❤️

The beginning sound is Adam Chance (just called "Chance" to avoid confusion with 2 Adams) imitating a Jaw Harp! He's been with them since co-founder, Chris Rupp, brother of Adam Rupp left for a solo career & other endeavors! Adam Rupp is imitating a harmonica! You're one of the few reactors who noticed Tim's bass drop!😊

This is the video that hooks 'em in! Amazing how many fans came across this one as the first video they'd seen. I think most of its power comes from the atmosphere created. All the techniques and technical doodats are employed to show us five men getting wet in Alabama, as they sing a song of loss and desperation. Austin's gaze direct to camera and tiny wink seems to show what kind of trouble he's gotten himself into, to have to get out of town fast.
@babyfry47752 жыл бұрын
This is tremendous. They’re all so talented and all of them can beatbox to a degree. Adam was doing the harmonica, drums and other sounds. Chance (back left) was doing the mouth harp sound. Austin (lead here) can also do a harmonica. Austin is from Georgia so that southern accent is real but he has had classical training and can drop it depending on the song. Tim has a 5 octave range so he can sing super low and also sing with the tenors. He’s amazing. Good reaction Daniel. 😍😀
@katrinaprescott59112 жыл бұрын
The song is Bluegrass, which as a genre comes from the southern Appalachians. The strong rhotic (voiced "r") accent, some of the particular vowel sounds and the yodel (the break) in Austin's part are all characteristic of the style and undoubtedly deliberate.
@DanielEarnest2 жыл бұрын
Agreed! It sounds amazing!!

The crackle at the beginning is supposed to be the sound vinyl records would make between tracks. I have read that Rob made that sound, but I only saw one comment say it. As others have said, Chance did the jaw harp, but he does not do it continuously. It is very hard on his throat, so he uses a looper (for those who do not know, it is a devise which repeats a segment in a continuous loop, til turned off).
@DanielEarnest2 жыл бұрын
That would make sense. Thanks for the info!

Yes, Adam Rupp, freak of nature, did the scratching at the beginning. Austin's voice crack is called a yodel. They are allowed to hit the r's (good catch) because that is a feature of country music. Nobody expects the nomonica the first time they hear it. Tim's voice goes down a full octave when he repeats the line (another good catch). Chance is doing Mongolian throat singing and getting that jaw harp sound. At least two of the members sing out of the sides of their mouths, a voice coach no-no. Home Fries are loyal and fairly friendly. This rabbit hold is deep and beautiful. And I like to run my mouth, so I write long notes.
@DougRayPhillips2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Enjoy the rabbit hole. Yes, Adam Chance does the diggeri-doo, juice-harp, whatever you want to call it, plus some other sound effects. He's the newest member, replacing Adam Rupp's brother Chris Rupp. To avoid confusion, they just call him Chance. Adam Rupp does the drums, harmonica, and some forest sounds. In live concerts, they use a looping machine for this song (setting the drums first), because, as you say, even Adam can't do fake drums and fake harmonica simultaneously.

Chance is not that new any more! Been with them since summer '16. I'm told that in concerts Austin and Adam do a harmonica duo.

This song blew me away when I first heard it & I was completely hooked. These guys are all so talented. They lean towards country but they can do any genre. They all can take the lead depending on whos voice is best for the song. They are known for their tight harmonies. Tim Foust is one of the best bass singers out there & their beatboxer vocal percussionist Adam Rupp can simulate any sound. This song is very old & is done in the bluegrass country style. It was used in the movie "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" starring George Clooney.

This was published by Dan Burnett in 1913, but he is not the composer. He just transcribed it. It is an old old American Folk Song that had been shared among country musicians for many many years. As such the originator/originators is unknown. It was learned by ear as was the custom during those times. Because of that the lyrics & tune varied from musician to musician as each added from their personal experiences.

Nice reaction, especially because you noticed and commented on Tim's pitch drop in the chorus after his solo. Most reactors don't comment on that, either because they didn't notice or because they dismissed it as insignificant. Based solely on that you, sir, are in elite company. The other criterion that I find useful is how soon reactors figure out that Adam does not have a harmonica, a criterion that I can't use to judge you because you had foreknowledge of that skill. But by all means react to "Ain't goin' down ...", where Adam's harmonica playing is prominently featured. Not to mention that the rest of the group, as usual, exceeds all reasonable expectations. There has to be a limit to that phenomenon, but we ain't there yet. Pray continue sharing your gift.

@@DanielEarnest At the risk of wearing out my welcome, "The Fairy Voice Mother" does a good job of explaining and demonstrating how Adam makes harmonica sounds in her reaction to "Man of Constant Sorrow". If the comments to her reaction are to be believed, she makes a better explanation than Adam does in his "harmonica" video (which I haven't seen -- sometimes it's better not to look behind the curtain, I figure).

Check out bass Tim Foust collab with fellow acapella singer Peter Hollens on " Misty Mountains". It's a cover from the Hobbit movie so they are in costumes like the movie. Tim brings the deep bass and Peter brings the high harmonies as well as his expert editing and production skills. Peter layers their voices over 120 times for a choir effect. It's a masterpiece!

If you like the beatboxing check out Wake Me Up. Austin is the featured vocalist but Adam (and the others too) get enough close up time to show his mouth/jaw movements. Another beatbox gem is 9 to 5 + Beatboxing Breakdown. That one is amazing. There's a version with Chris and a later one with Chance. I like the first one better because of the lighting. The group also did a video for 9 to 5 in a office setting that's also great. Austin is a Georgia boy who spent is younger years with his dad's gospel singing group, then later got a degree in musical theater. So, the country twang to his voice is natural for him I guess even though he later learned to drop it. A fine example of that is Austin Brown's solo (without Home Free but with Sebastien Douyon on piano) from Les Miz, Bring Him Home. Absolutely stunningly beautiful!

I'm a little late but, having seen them for the second time just last night, I had to chime in. The only enhancement they do is using a few loopers. The jaw harp sound is initially produced by (Adam) Chance using a throat singing method. It hurts the throat to do it too long so they loop that after the first couple of times. Rob's "domp - dump" rhythm is looped also. Adam has so much going on that it's hard to tell what's looped and what's not. Regardless, there's world class talent here and the reproduce every note of it on stage,
