If I were deserted on a remote island and had the conveyance to listen to one group until I either died or be rescued...Home Free would be it. They've done it all. Soul, Do-Wop, Blues, Country, R/B, Xmas...and maybe another genre I can't recall now. Their ceiling is above our comprehension.

The Righteous Brothers had a big hit with "Unchained Melody" in 1965. Home Free did such a beautiful rendition of this classic song. The video in prison is very fitting as this song was originally written for the 1955 prison film "Unchained". The film centered on a man who contemplates either escaping from prison to live life on the run or finishing his sentence and returning to his wife & family. The song focuses on someone who pines for a lover he has not seen in a "long, lonely time"

Thanks for the information. I didn't know the background of the song. Home Free's rendition pays fabulous tribute to Bobby Hatfield's memorable rendition; that is in no way an easy feat.

That was making music that's been done. Awesome. Which is different than making something new. The great thing about the 60-80's. Nothing was off the table. ANYTHING could be done, created, smashed together and there was a whole bunch of people that just wanted. More, More, More.

The Unlikely Origins of This Love Song The song was originally written as part of a score for a 1955 movie called Unchained, which was based on a book published by Kenyon Judson Scudder in 1952. Both the book and the movie follow the story of a man serving time in a medium-security prison. He is deeply conflicted and must decide whether to behave himself behind bars and serve out his sentence or try to escape so he can see his wife, who he loves deeply and misses so very much. The movie version of the song was performed by Todd Duncan, who also had a minor role in the movie. Who Wrote "Unchained Melody"? "Unchained Melody" was written by composer Alex North and lyricist Hy Zaret. North composed the score for the film and was then asked to write a theme song. Zaret was originally not interested in helping North with the lyrics for the song, but North kept after him, and Zaret finally agreed. Two different versions of the song were released to coincide with the movie's release; an orchestral version and one with the lyrics performed by Al Hibbler. Hibbler's version of the song hit the number one position on the R&B charts in 1955, as did a version by Roy Hamilton. Another version from June Valli reached the #29 spot on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles list in May 1955. The song was also recorded by Harry Belafonte later that same year.

Hey Jamel !!! Good to see you cover these boys again !!! We miss you so much !! They killed it with this arrangement in a doo-wop 1950's style....it's perfect and the jail, is in line with the original of this song which pre-dates the Righteous Brothers 1965 cover. The original was from a 1955 film called "Unchained: about a pair of lovers separated by his being in prison. So Home Free did it's homework on this one !!! Again it's good to have you back. A suggestion would be to cover Home Free's cover of Dire Straits song, "Brothers in Arms"....

Home Free done right by paying homage to the movie "UNCHAINED " a 1955 low budget little-known movie, about a prisoner torn between escaping to be with his wife and family or finishing his sentence. In the movie the song was by Todd Duncan and was written by Alex North (music),Hy Zaret (lyrics) In the year of the movie Al Hibbler, and Roy Hamilton Les Baxter hit Billboard top 10 in the U.S. and Al Hibbler, Les Baxter, Jimmy Young and Liberace appeared in the top 20 in the U.K. simultaneously for the same song. In 1984 the Manhattan Transfer did a remake of cover found on their "Bop Doo- Wopp". Also check out Tim solo project.
