I love Home Free and totally respect your opinion. For me this song has never been one of my favorites. I did love Micahel Bolton and this song always makes me think of him., but it never made my Playlist until Home Free did this version. I could take or leave the song, but HF made me love something about it. I think their complimentary, no showboating way of singing a song is something I will always appreciate. Music doesn't always need vocal tricks, a lot of the time just a straight forward heartfelt, clean, passionate song is enough. That's what this is for me. Thank you for respectfully voicing your opinion.

That makes a lot of sense actually and I’m so glad you commented. Thank you for allowing me the space to share my feelings and for so respectfully expressing yours! It means so much especially on this platform. I LOVED their version of “man of constant sorrow” and I agree with you. Sometimes straight fwd and clean showcases aspects of a song and the beauty of it in a new way. No vocal tricks (tho his ability to sing so high and his runs are impressive), just heartfelt and clean. You said that well. That actually gives me a new perspective toward the song. Thank you, April. ❤️

I'm pretty sure this song was by Percy Sledge back in 1966....As far as bringing in the other members, on this song, I really can't see where they'd fit in.... Back to your preference for bassist, (my weakness too)....You'll get an earful in their cover of Dire Straits "Brothers in Arms"...a song in tribute to fallen soldiers.... For pure harmonies, it's a tough call but the cover of "Helplessly Hoping" orig by Crosby, Stills & Nash is ear candy....For pure fun, check on the "Butts Medley/Remix"....5 or 6 songs featuring the backside...(and you'll note, they NEVER feature a females butt in the video as they didn't want to objectify the female half of the planet)... Most Home Fries will give ya dozens of selections by this versatile group but most will suggest you hold off on a reaction to "Mayday" until you become completely familiar with each member and their typical lanes. Oh, I subbed due to this review...Good job..

Rosalie, yes I agree there are songs where a lower lead voice that resonates would be the perfect fit. This arrangement however, needed the higher lead vocals for clarity and as a distinct contrast to the bass and harmony vocals, which were perfectly together and smooth. The lead singer's voice was clear and delivered with full on emotion. You couldn't take anything away and that's the magic of great musicians and their arrangements. Everything they did "added." Home Free raised the bar with this cover. Exceptional.

thank you for sharing your thoughts. to me it's not either or, but both, and. Both knowledge and preference can work together. there is a lot I don't know, but those with knowledge and those without are allowed to prefer one style over another in my opinion. yes, sometimes it helps knowing less and looking at things from a simple point of view (so i think that's an interesting point on your part), but I don't think I dove deep into music here, but more so expressed a personal preference (i.e. my thoughts as a beholder :) ) what is more interesting to me is how some (not saying you did), got so defensive in regards to my personal preferences that they attack, as if their identity is so closely tied to this song/singer and to others opinions thereof. quite interesting how humans operate :) I think it's nice you are able to enjoy the music :)

Their bass singer Tim Foust did a collaboration with fellow Acapella singer Peter Hollens on... "Misty Mountains", a song from the Hobbit Movie of The Lord Of The Rings. Just the two of them, but Peter is the master of layering voices so they sound more like a choir. Tim also gets in lots of bass notes! This is epic!

I think if you had seen half a dozen more of their songs before this one you might have felt differently. The critique is valid. Of course, in their catalog as a whole, everybody gets a turn. Some songs center on just one person, some spread the wealth around. This is one of many vids they did during COVID shutdown. They recorded their vocals in their separate homes, then someone did the final audio mix, and then they all mimed their parts on camera, again in their separate homes. In some of those vids, such as The Gambler, they created an illusion that they were all together in one room. Others, they did not.

Austin did a fabulous job of this classic song. Loved Percy Sledge's version, but this was taken to another level. I think it is also better than Michael Bolton's version. And remember this was done during quarantine, so the guys weren't even together. The backing harmonies are great, along with Tim's bass. And Adam's vocal percussion is outstanding. This is why these guys are my favorite a cappella group. I have watched hundreds of reactors to this song & most are blown away by this version. You are the first one ever who didn't care for it, but you are entitled to your opinion. For songs that are bass heavy where Tim Foust leads, check out "Brothers In Arms", "In The Blood", "What We Ain't Got", "Hillbilly Bone", "Misty Mountains" with Peter Hollens.

No backlash. I think you hit on a lot of how I feel about this song AND what I think helps Home Free stand out (in an interesting way). Many of the other a cappella groups tend to lean on their vocalists and use a little shock value to sell their performance. Home Free tends to lean into the actual song. Some of their arraignments, because of this, can end up sounding a bit simple or straightforward (as you commented about this one). All I'd say about that is that they, to me, end up with more of a song one might hear on the radio than a nice group of singers. That also means that the different aspects of the group can almost disappear into a sort of background sound (especially the bass) and it really takes me a little extra concentration to hear the amazing bas lines that are building the extremely solid foundation. As for this song, I've always liked it but never been blown away by it, no matter who has sung it. That said, the props I will give to home free (and it goes for many of their covers/songs) is that they are all so crystal clear that I hear lyrics that I've never caught before. This song is no different. I always consider this a sappy love song, but if you listen to the lyrics it is a song about the darker side of love and how true love is walking that edge between oneself and another person. If the love received is not on the same level, it can become terribly destructive (ignoring friends, holding on by going bankrupt, giving up everything just to keep that person around). I'll let you know that Home Free switches up their lead very often. They approach it as trying to find the best voice to fit their vision for the song but sometimes it ends up being who arrived at the studio first that day .

Your comment is outstanding!! Thank you so much for taking the time to share. I’m learning and find what you said interesting. The part about who comes to the studio first, had me smiling. @@rosalieelliottofficial You should never worry about expressing your true impressions of anything you react to. It is an essential part of reacting and not just being a semi promoter. That said while I am a HF fan and consider myself a "Home Fry" I am also a fan of another a capella group that I would love to see you react to, Pentatonix. They are also a 5 member group and won the same TV show as HF on the previous season. In fact, it is their success and thrice Grammy Award-winning subsequent career that has prompted the rise of popularity of the art form. Pentatonix, or PTX for short, are more pop/R&B/soul oriented though like HF they do explore a wide variety of genres, especially known for their incredible Christmas catalog. THey have an 11 year, 200+ song catalog of both covers, affectionately referred to as "upgrades" by the Pentaholics, that provide a very diverse range of options. Being a dedicated fan of both groups I guess makes me a Pentafry.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Sometimes "simple" emphasizes quality, which is what I think of this song. "Bells and whistles" aren't always necessary; paying homage to the original is a valid creative choice too. And their efforts to continuously put out videos for their fans throughout the pandemic and lockdown (thus the simplicity and separation in this one) speaks to the kind of people they are--yet another reason they are dearly loved by the Home Fries! 🏠 🍟 🥰

I believe this was also a Covid-19 release which is why they are all separated on their own tv. They had to send the recordings back and forth to do this. I think another one was their Sea Shanty video where they were still separated by the pandemic. Love this version and love this song. It’s almost always great to hear old songs either freshened up or simply sung again by current artists. Pentatonix has many songs that feature just one singer also. Could easily tell you weren’t to impressed but not all songs are gonna be the most amazing song we’ve ever heard. There are many songs by my favorite artists that I don’t really care for. It just makes the ones that hit it out of the park that much better.

The original recording sung by the great Percy Sledge was sung in a high tenor, as well as Michal Bolton's cover was sung in a high tenor, although he has a raspier voice. I know of no versions where multiple voices took the lead on this song. HF's version stayed true to the both the original and Michael Bolton's cover of having a single lead. Many, if no most of HF's songs feature multiple performances by the band members, but this particular song really does not call for it. Sorry to disagree with your take. Btw, after viewing dozens of female reactors to this video, you are the only one that did not clearly like this performance by Austin.

it's ok you disagree :) respectful dialogue and various perspectives and opinions is what makes for the opportunity to grow and learn. It's very valid that too many voices leading would not necessarily work for this song. Something I didn't consider. :) I guess I am not like other women ;) Nonetheless I would like to reiterate, they did do a good job, and it's valid most covers are probably sung higher anyways, but it just did not blow me away. The beauty of music is it will touch different people in different ways. I have a feeling the next HF video I watch will be right up my alley :)

I believe this song was made in the middle of covid isolation at the time hence the separation and complications of singing together and every now and then it's nice to hear a solo, to highlight individuals importance. The high range I agree with only because I'm jealous and never going to hit those high notes😂 and only a very few could sing this in that key range.

You will find they vary a lot as to whether they allow one or two members to carry the song to up through four and occasionally five (although the songs where Adam Rupp: Vocal Percussionist has significant singing lines are rare). One of the things many enjoy about them is the variety in their arrangements.

This was recorded during a time of covid restrictions. Most of the members were recording their parts from home studios and they live in at least three different states. The recording was done online and I think it's amazing that they were able to get a video out at all.

Hearing your original history with a cappella music I highly recommend Home Free's cover of a song called Brother by a comtemporary christian group called needtobreathe (i think). Be prepared to be amazed by the wonderful music and to laugh to tears from their acting/storyline. (Note: the lead singer here is the elf in that video and the warrior lady is his actual girlfriend and partner. Also, she's in the sudio with him here; that's who he's looking at.)

Rosalie, I just discovered this. I think you will find that as long as you are being respectful (like you were here), Homefries will respect your opinion and listen to what you say. My favorite thing about Home Free is that they seem to have no ego's. I love that they take their music seriously, but not themselves. If you continue to approach them with an open mind, you will be blown away by their versatility and their range (and their sense of humor).

I totally accept your opinion of this song. We all have our personal preferences. This is one of the few songs of this group where one vocalist is showcased thru the whole song. Although you perhaps were not totally thrilled with this one song please don't stop reviewing them. They have a very large variety of music and I'm sure that you'll find other songs that you do like. Cheers!

If you notice you only see Austin live. The rest are on monitors. Covid times. More base is it? Then their cover of Blake Shelton's Hill Billy Bone, or Misty Mountain collaboration by Tim Foust and Peter Hollens. Seven Bridges Road is another good one.

Austin and Adam (beatboxer) did a great job. He really has a great singing voice. This was during Covid so they weren’t even together. I thought the use of tv’s was clever. I respect your opinion. If you like bass try Brothers in Arms, I Can’t Outrun You, In the Blood, Hillbilly Bone, Helplessly Hoping to hear more incredible bass and harmonies.

If you haven't discovered the Australian music scene, then a good introduction would be to listen to John Farnham; he is a versatile entertainer, and can cover many different genres. Check out his version of The Beatles classic song Help, accompanied by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra; two great duets are with Olivia Newton John singing Please Don't Ask, and with Jimmy Barnes singing When Something Is Wrong With My Baby.

I felt the same way about this being an Austin Brown feat. Home Free song. I do think some of this was because it was they put together in isolation. Each part was recorded separately. It was also a love song from Austin to his gf... so there is that. Lol. If you want to hear pure a cappella from HomeFree you should listen to Helplessly Hoping. If you need some bass... and want to hear something different... check out Peter Hollens and Tim Foust doing "Misty Mountains" from the Hobbit.

Great reaction ! I love these guys ! Please be aware that the first two songs that you chose feature Austin Brown in the lead - this is not the case for the majority of their work. You should check more of their catalog. I would suggest 'Brothers in Arms', 'In the Blood', 'End of the Road'. You will be pleased with what you find.

Just found your channel, enjoyed your reaction and your analysis. May I recommend a few Home Free songs that feature more bass and/or each singer participating. "Brothers in Arms" a Dire Straits cover, "Everybody Walking This Land", "Helplessly Hoping" a Crosby, Stills and Nash cover and their newest release, a Home Free original, "What's Left of My Heart". Really enjoyed your video and subbing so I won't miss anything. Thank you.

Home Free does certain songs where a particular group member is featured, such as this one with Austin. An example is Rob featured in Never Gonna Give You Up. There are others. As others have mentioned, this song was published during the social distancing era of the pandemic. In fact, they published a very funny song/video named Quarantine (a clever lyric variation of Billy Joel’s Honesty)
