We just set up a home gym with a prx pro! My husband and I have three kids, he was paying for a pool membership (he does triathlon) and we were paying for the gym and for three kids at their daycare. If the kids were sick or crabby, we couldn’t take them. Now we can workout during their nap time or just go to the garage before they wake up and one of us doesn’t have to stay home to keep an eye on them. For us, this just makes so much more sense. Added bonus is that the kids get to see first hand how their parents are staying healthy and they can even join in when they’re a bit older!

I’ve been in a private powerlifting gym, commercial gyms, and now I have a home gym. The only benefit to the commercial gym was that variety of equipment. The benefit of the powerlifting gym was the specific equipment and the environment based in being strong. I can create all of that at my house if I want. It also only takes me 30 seconds to walk out to my garage. I have a young son and a wife so the time benefits are huge there. I can also train whenever I want. The only downside most people will experience in a home gym is the motivation. You have to be self motivated. You have to actually want to workout or you need one of the services talked about in the video. Now with the pandemic thing it’s also a self reliance thing. I shave my head, I have a home gym, and I know how to cook. A lot of the dumb issues people had was not being able to hit a barber, not knowing how to cook, and not being able to workout. I don’t rely on the gym being opened up in the morning. It’s always open.

Having a Home Gym works for me! I have the available space, and I had the money to spare for a decent enough setup. I work long, weird hours, so if I wanted to go to a commercial gym, it would have to be the 24/7 type...and I would be working out at 2 or 3am, so it would be empty regardless. That, and the type of gym it is doest fit the style of lifting I enjoy. I could find a more hardcore gym, sure...but it would be a longer drive, and probably wouldn't be open 24/7, which limits me even more. I work like 50-60 hours a week, so I only have maybe 2-3 hours to spare a day...going to a well equipped hardcore gym would require an hour drive total, then you have to wait on equipment...so my 2-3 hours is already considerably shortened and impacted by even 10 minutes lost from traffic, or waiting on a squat rack Whereas, I can step out onto my huge enclosed porch, that I wasnt using for anything anyways, and get probably 90% of the same lifts I could get at my local globo-gym. Hell, my local globo-gym doesnt even have legit squat racks! They have Smith Machines...which I do NOT like I like free weights, I like loud music, I like being barefoot, I like being able to stop to take a piss and my equipment didnt get taken over by granny who doesnt known what shes doing... I dont have to wait for Kyle to scroll through his phone for 30 minutes so I can get to an incline bench Or people who decide to take over a 2nd bench so their friend can use it as a chair while they take turns texting in the Smith Machine 🙄 People not knowing how to use equipment The skinny asshole who just HAS to take up 3 different pieces of the most used equipment, to do Circuit Training/Giant Sets at peak hours.... The cocky bastards who see you just sit down at a machine, and walk up and start pestering you "how many sets you got left?" Like...listen here Juan, I just fucking sat down. Give me 15 minutes of peace and I'll be done... Then you have "that guy" who takes every single 45 in the gym, loads it onto the Leg Press, does 5 quarter reps, then starts texting. Does 5 more quarter reps, and texts for another 10 minutes... I HATE Commercial Gyms. HATE THEM...because PEOPLE dont know how to act. People are rude, selfish, and self centered Im sorry, Im here to BUST ASS for the limited time I have. Im not here to talk. Im not here to make friends. Im not here to stand around and wait on equipment...Im here to get my sets in, and go home And I can do that a MILLION times more easily at home, on my own Squat Rack with a bunch of attachments and accessories I can curl in the squat rack. I can deadlift without people trying to take my weights (I literally had a guy try to take weight off my bar between sets) People trying to steal my towel/shaker cup/gym bag Fuck people...fuck commercial gyms... i do not agree with this video, and ive had a pretty nice home gym for close to 3 years. if home gyms were to take over itd have already happened. When COVID is over and everything normalizes, i think the market will be flooded with second hand equipment. Like you said in this video, people are lazy. They will look at the equipment they probably overpaid for, and think to themselves, i need to try to get my money back. I can not wait for it either, because i have wanted to upgrade my plates for like a year and a half.

Honestly hyped at the perspective of more and more lifters building their own Iron Temple. Commercial gyms have been relying on the fact that we had no other options to get our lifts in and the service they provide has gotten worse over the years. Either support a small indie hardcore gym or build your own, you'll make 10x better gains and the initial investment is nothing compared to how happy you'll be to finally have your own space.

In my case: I live with a high risk person so it will be my home gym, walking and running for a very long time. I've got a bench with safety pins, squat racks, dumbbells, 2 barbells, trap bar, bumper plates, and an outdoor (on a covered porch) pull up/dip station. I will eventually return to the gym but it will be much later than most people.

Agree!! Been working out at home for about 30+ years. Started noticing a different type of crowd that was not the old school hard core lifters. Lost my workout partner when we moved out of state and now workout with the wife. No driving, don't have to explain what working in is to some kid, and I have everything I need. Best part is I can go pour a beer and relax after a workout.

The reason i love having a home gym is that i am more consistent with going to the gym. I live in a small town and its about a 2 mile walk to the gym, and because of that i never was really consistent. I could go every day for 2 months then just 1-2 times per week for 6 months, then suddenly not once for a month. Now that i have a home gym its just a few feet away and i have no excuse. Absolutly love it.

@@ytano5782 I ordered crash cushions to deal with deadlift vibrations and noise, but hammering something into the spotter arms and J hooks... well, let's just say I will lift at business hours ;). Another thing is structural safety. I hired a structural engineer (300€ for a piece of paper) to ensure that my floor can take the weight, because that is a ton of force on two feet while deadlifting. I completely agree. I put together my own crude home gym due to COVID and will NEVER go back to my commercial gym ever again even though they are now back open. I have already cancelled my membership. I save so much time by not having to drive to the gym and wait on people to get out of my way so I can use a bench or certain set of dumbbells. No annoying teenagers taking up space by not really working out and just socializing (that is an especially big problem at my old gym unless you go in at like 2 AM). I can work out whenever I want, listen to whatever music I want. It's so much more convenient. Especially since I am extremely introverted and would sometimes get extreme social anxiety when the gym was extra crowded.

I worked out in commercial gyms from 1996 to 2016. December 2016 my son was born. I was forced more or less due to time constraints to start a garage gym. I started in early 2017 with a used powertec, cheap used weight plates and a bar, and the cheapest rack I could buy at the time T2 for 300$. I was used to hammer strength, Ivanko dumbbells, nice equipment at my gym. It was tough giving that up initially...but as my gym grew and evolved I started to think of all the positives of working out in my garage. I haven’t looked back at going to a commercial gym again. If I can change, we can change. We all can change 😎

love the lifting vibes at the gym , i enjoy the drive and buying powerlifting equipment is expensive and gym memberships are cheap, plus its nice having a garage that works as a dam garage but if your just your average gym go'er whp doesnt need specialised equipment or has plenty of room or like many people dont care about having a garage then in the long run it can be financialy viable but with specialised stuff for if you compete the initial cost to equip the gym js quite alot and would take many years to save , like my powerlifting and strong man gym i go to is $10 AUD a week, a good quality squat rack is like $2,300 AUD alone, so unless im gping to be at it for many many many years its just easier to go to the gym

Some people work better in groups or at least with people watching them and/or pushing them, others are self-motivated and disciplined enough to work better alone. Personally, I would never go back to a commercial gym. The commute, having to stick to a schedule, having to deal with other people, having to wait around for equipment to be free, not having the exact equipment or the quality of equipment you want, constantly getting colds -- not having to deal with any of that is just blissful. The time and money savings are an additional bonus. And the fact that you can finish your workout, have a shower, and sit down to a nice hot meal right after is the best thing of all.

Now they get to stay and hang out with me, getting inspired to work out and be healthy themselves. Home gyms are not economically or spacially efficient, though they are time-efficient. People won't spend the money or space to have a home gym, as they don't have the emotional investment in training that would merit the expense.
@flabio70744 жыл бұрын
This is probably true for a lot of people. But in reality calisthenics don’t take up any space. Too strong for that? Kettlebells and dumbbells take up almost no space. And if you happen to have a garage, a squat stand and barbell has a very small footprint.
@Lurtz143014 жыл бұрын
Big Mac agreed. Especially with some of the new squat racks that fold up into the wall. Also time is money. Saving 15 minutes on a commute every day adds up over time financially as well. Less gas, less vehicle maintenance. It’s not huge amounts but over time it becomes significant. You can’t generalize either. Sure some people wouldn’t have the emotional investment but there’s thousands out there who successfully workout at home for years.

Spot on Coop. A lot of people (myself included) are scooping up as much equipment as we can right now and are already building out home gyms; that’s why everything is sold out or at astronomical prices. When commercial gyms open up, most people who did that aren’t going to return to gyms bc we’ve already invested at home. As a reaction to that gyms will probably have to raise their prices due to lower demand and that will turn off the average joe and make them invest in fitness at home.

Have to side with Thrall on this, the first argument of efficiency kind of falls apart, if you don’t have the finances to make an incredible home gym where you can workout the same as a big chain gym, then the efficiency goes out the window if you don’t get the same quality workout. And there will always be people who can’t invest thousands in a home gym but are able to spend $10 a month.

What people don't realise is that the vast majority don't need to invest thousands of pounds/ dollars for a decent setup. A rack, barbell, plates, bench and adjustable dumbbells will be good for 90% of people. I spent under £500 back in January on that equipment and have put on some good mass in that time.

For powerlifters, olympic lifters and strongman athletes, I think you and Alan are both right. We are going to go back to our specilaized gyms when this is all over for the comradery and coaching BUT many of us will invest in a minimal home set-up for in case something like this happens again. You really don't need much. A barbell, some plates, and some sort of rack or a pair of stands. If you can't get ahold of a bench, you can always do floor presses. It's far better than nothing and it doesn't take up much space.

I used to have an extensive home gym in high school growing up, and made incredible gains there, and loved it personally. Of course, all of the people who subscribe to this channel will agree that home gyms are great. However, other demographics (the other 90% of people that work out) won't agree. People enjoy going to a commercial gym more than training at home, due to the different environment, camaraderie, competition, and social/psychological reasons. Also, people simply aren't motivated at home, and they won't have access to the level of equipment that a legit facility will have. If you're going to say "all you need is a barbell and plates", that's simply not optimal in my opinion and professional experience.

100% agree. 1. I’m a married man with two kids. My wife and I simply do not have 2 hours 3-4x a week to drive out to the YMCA or planet fitness. The kicker for me was one time I was obviously waiting on the one squat rack at the commercial gym I used to frequent and two frat boys took turns doing basic bro bicep curl super sets in the only squat rack for 45 minuets. I eventually had to go confront them and was not super nice about it. Then an almost naked girl came over and asked me if she could take a selfie in the squat rack in between my sets. I told her no. It was way too much for me. I ordered a squat rack and cleaned out my garage the next week. I’ve been lifting at home and have an online coach for 2 years now and have made significant strength gains in that period and saved at least 50% of the time and 100% of the gym fees and headaches.

I've become a better lifter and athlete since I've started lifting at home.
