it's nice and it's something you should know about, there is a lot of use that you should just use VPS, a ton easier and cheaper. But a big fun part of homelabbing is install and troubleshooting a whole ass enterprise internet/server/storage system self-hosted inside your home haha.

AmericanCloud is very expensive for hobby projects. Compared to OVH for example.
@aronwagner3267
@aronwagner3267 Жыл бұрын
It just depends on how you are calculating cost. We don't over provision our servers giving our customers maximum performance per dollar unlike OVH where they over provision servers to the Nth degree. That might be a better option if performance and noisy neighbors don't bother you. Ultimately we want the best solution for the use case, if we find our community wants a cheaper option for hosting we can create a shared tier with over provisioned servers and reduce the prices. Just let us know!
@F4HDK
@F4HDK Жыл бұрын
@@aronwagner3267 Thank you for your answer. But OVH also proposes "guaranteed resources" compute instances for example, without over-provisioning. - OVH b2-7; guaranteed resource; RAM 7 GB ; 2vCPUs; SSD 50 GB ; 250Mb/s without trafic limit; 29$/month - AmericanCloud; 2 vCPU; 4GB Ram; 320GB SSD; 60$/month That makes a big difference. Other cloud provider are also cheap with guaranteed resources. - Hetzner CCX12; guaranteed resource; 2 vCPU; RAM 8GB; SSD 80GB; trafic 20TB; 22€/month Hetzner cloud is available in USA, like OVH.

Noob question. Any guidance on how to use the same PC(no emulation, literally the same os, files, programs, etc) at 2 different work stations? Trying to use the same PC in my office and hobby room(same house), but not sure if something like a reverse kvm exists(1 in 2 out), or how to carry the signals over longer distances. Thanks.

Nice video Brett. Hey what are your thoughts on Oracle’s always free cloud compute tier? I think you can have two 1vCPU 2GB ram 200GB VMs running indefinitely for free, so long as there’s activity on them. I didn’t have much success opening ports/firewalls on them though. I did manage to get a few services up on one using Nick Busey’s excellent HomelabOS project with a tinc bastion server running on a digital ocean droplet. Would be interested to see you make a video on what’s possible using free cloud hosting
@Dot_UwU

For the arm one, you can have 24gb ram and 4 arm cores with 200gb storage
@RaidOwl
@RaidOwl Жыл бұрын
Yeah it’s hard to beat free haha. If that’s all you’re looking for then that’s an awesome deal. I think was AC is bringing to the table is their ease of use and unlimited egress. As for what’s possible with free hosting, you could essentially run your domain proxied through Cloudflare into a free oracle instance and run a simple website, custom DNS server, uptime kuma, url shortener, all kinds of stuff that doesn’t necessarily require tons of horsepower.

I was hoping for a more elaborate proof of concept, but I get the point, it's just simply too expensive to replicate a proper home lab in the cloud. It's really unfortunate that it is so expensive. Better off with physical hardware in almost all cases these days with the occasional backup to backblaze.

TBH, I mainly clicked on the video because I was a skeptic of using the cloud when I have the resources to self host, but the title said you moved your lab so I wanted to see why. I like your content, but I start to lose interest in it when I can't even gauge what the video is about based on the title.

I wonder how you would feel about it if it wasn't a sponsored video. Linode 4 GB is $24/mo 2 CPUs, 4Gb ram, 80 gig storage and Linode 8 GB is $48/mo 4 CPUs, 8Gb ram, 160 gig storage. Granted 4 and 5 Tb transfer a month respectively, but for the money, its cheaper.
@RaidOwl
@RaidOwl Жыл бұрын
I will always be 100% honest, sponsored or not. I like AC and what they’re building up. Is the “the best cloud hosting provider in existence”, probably not. Linode as a larger company can offer cheaper hosting per resource but AC is attempting to break through with their UI and unlimited egress. Will it work out? Time will tell.

Need to be careful with Linode as they been bought out by Akamai and already raised their prices.
@aronwagner3267
@aronwagner3267 Жыл бұрын
Those are also shared resources on Linode, the pricing is comparable/better than their dedicated resources. We don't over provision any of our servers on AC, all of our resources are dedicated. That being said we can always create a cheaper tier on over provisioned servers, but that will incur a performance hit and noisy neighbors.

Buy a NAS and SSDs and setup a RAID 🦉 array...one price, then if one wants diversify backups of your most important data over Google Cloud, DropBox, Flickr...etc, each one can be host to different categories of data. It's one price for the NUC and SSDs and free for the limited amount of space via cloud, limited sure hence host the most valuable of each catagory. Jus sayin... Love ya vids though, Mr. 🦉.

For sure, cloud hosting will never be more economical than hosting yourself but there is a place for it for a lot of people.
@repairstudio4940
@repairstudio4940 Жыл бұрын
@@RaidOwl I agree ...fact is someone's gonna cross the bridge where it's simply more economical to cloud host many things (some ppl = myself) as sure it may cost but for the security provided without extra measures to setup yourself and well the cost of electricity which has slowly been 📈 climbing, I will refute myself and say if your hosting a lot of data and even if one has a NAS the benefits of physical space, electricity costs, and the security most modern cloud services provide...I agree fully. I suppose my main focus is, the baby's first steps, the graduation from college, the very sentimental moments or what means most sure host them in a cloud but I think it's also best to have them locally as security is great on many cloud services but NOTHING is 100% secure. Indeed, agreed. I look forward to your next video. Perhaps one on server maintenance, some ppl, ahem, cough could truly benefit from that 😉.
