its a press for cutting leather, its meant to click once the knife goes through the leather hence the name clicker press!

Looked at the master tools clicker presses 4 ton and 8 ton. The demo they showed using steel backer plates under the plastic cutting board and steel plates on top of the clicker die. Therefore a lot less flex than you are getting with the wood on top and bottom. I think you have it correct and only need the steel spacer above the die and below the cutting board and you are off to the races. If you need more pressure just use a piece of pipe extender on the end of the handle(commonly called a cheater bar) to dramatically increase the effective pressure being exerted by your press as is. Looks good to me and I just might copy your basic design ideas. Thanks for the most enjoyable and useful video, Sir.

This press is a beast!!! First I tried die cutting, I also bought this kind of cutting board - seemed like a good idea, but this texture on it is a pain in the ass, also it likes to crack - proper die cutting board is a must! My suggestion is not to use any soft material (like wood) in this process - lots of power goes into compression of it and also makes uneven results in cutting.
@turboconqueringmegaeagle90065 жыл бұрын

You might want to try brass cut plate over steel base plate. Presses are all about proper use of shims and centering your work. 19mm steel plate with shims under it and a brass cut plate over the steel. Only shim the steel to get it parallel to your die youll keep your brass longer.

A spring would be a very nice addition. It looks like a brand new Victorian machine, well done m8, just be careful with the welds on the back as there's some play in the frame, watch back, when you press the frame around the piston bars moves up, hence the uneven first cut, a beautiful and useful bit of kit. Ps if i didn't know better I'd swear you had speeded up some footage 😄😅

At 22:30 can see a little bit of flex at the hinge, bit more beefing up there might be in order, great build though. Particularly liked your use of RSJ offcuts - dirt cheap to get and half the fabrication already done for anything that needs a box / square / rigid construction.
@turboconqueringmegaeagle90065 жыл бұрын
Yup, that hinge was a lazy shortcut, I'm going to end up spending longer fixing it than it would have taken to do it properly! I've got about 50' foot of those offcuts, haul of the year so far, it's only been tacked together too so it's easy to split it back down into flats.

It's called strip knife, I couldn't find any retailers so went to a die maker and he just gave me 4meters, I wanted to weld it up so used 3x20 mm but apparently the thinner 0.5-1.0 mm stuff will work but needs wooden backing and you can't weld it... Although a tig would probably do a nice job

@billwessels2074 жыл бұрын
By the way, some Brit fellow with the odd name of Harry has a video where uses a homemade clicker dies using wood surrounding the die-cutting blade as well as supporting it with wood inside the die. Precludes the need for welding and fabricating the inner diestock body. Cutting down on time and labor and expense. You might just want to check out his channel sometime. He has some interesting and novel ideas at times. Although he does (in typical Brit fashion) rather blather on at times. Pleasantly odd fellow.
@turboconqueringmegaeagle90064 жыл бұрын
He's a very pleasant chap to listen to, the lightweight strips he sets in plywood are from the packing industry for stamping cardboard to shape, from what I understand they are only really suitable for the more supple upholstery leathers. I was very fortunate with the weldable die knife as the very friendly guys that make dies professionally just gave me an 8' length. I did donate to their tea and biscuit fund.

Well I've never been so insulted in all my days.... Understood with the ribs, although the hinge and it's attachment to the base are currently the source of most of the flexing, but now that the hinge pin is bent I'm in the position where it'll work but to take it apart I'll be using a grinder.
