Ethan and Garrett will be giving a step by step guide to making your own deer food blocks! This is a easy and cheap way to make multiple blocks! We hope you enjoy! Please like, comment and subscribe!
Ingredients List:
Full kerneled corn
Oats
Sugar
Dry molasses
Corn syrup
Poultry Layer Mix (or any chicken feed with calcium)
Vegetable Oil
Utensils List:
Spatulas/cooking spoons
Pot holders
Multiple large disposable baking pans
Oven
Multiple 5 gallon buckets
Tamper (anything to help compact the blocks)

You can bye a electric cement mixer for 200.00 and a lot less, dry mix every thing then add your vegetable oil. Let it mix real well then add syrup. And you can set a burner under it on low while it mixes to heat it up, I have seen trappers doing this with dirt and flake wax, to make freeze proof dirt. It would be faster.

I will make this up. Minus the oil and corn syrup. The sugar and molasses and some water should be good enough of a binder. I like that you are helping the deer out during the winter. It is hit or miss with acorns each season, so a little extra is great. Come hunting season you boys send me a nice tenderloin off of the deer you get! Lol.

I just put a bag of Horse / Cow Sweet Feed in a hydraulic Press and create the block inside of a section of steel pipe with a steel top plate to press it down. Then just push the feed block out of the pipe. It's a lot easier and cheaper. The bags of feed are already made and mixed together... By the time you guys get done mixing and baking, you've spent more than the block costs at the store.

I think I'd have me a drill with a big paddle bit or something or like one of those 30 inch steel ribbon ball mixing arms that goes in a drill that they use for plaster and mud. They only cost like $17 if you have a drill. It would cut your time in half. Sounds like y'all have these deer addicted to your blocks, good job.

You guys could save a lot of time and money by just going to your local feed supplier and getting a 500lb bag of three way base custom mixed. Specify how much dry molasses and mineral you want mixed into it and then go pick up your bag of feed already all mixed up. Most rural feed suppliers routinely make custom mixes for clients. Because it is in bulk it saves you way more than buying 50lb sacks of separate ingredients. The sacks hold 1,500lbs of feed so if you start with 500lbs of three way as your base your mineral and dry molasses won't put you over what a bulk feed bag will hold.

You should find a used concrete mixer to mix everything then you can dump it all in at once and let it go. Then to clean you dump hot water in let spin and dump it. Easy clean up. Tamp it down easier by greasing up outside of a second bucket filled half way or full of rocks then fill the buckets with rocks and let them sit the 2 days with the bucket in it.. Use to do same things years back.

It seems like a Summer mix at 12% sweet horse feed with lots of molasses would work and maybe just add whatever else you wanted to it

How about you just leave it in the bucket and mix it with a drill with a paint or morter mixer in it and scoop it in .. Sure seams easier.... Great content guys !! .

I would suggest a square bucket. The deer push my square blocks out of camera range when they get small. I can just imagine what they would do to a round one.

As you noted about two weeks. I've see corn rain on mold start to spoil Will look on comments See if any feed backs how it holds up in winter rain. commercial grade feed blocks Fall apart too with rain issues. Just looks pack down harder to me . Got me thinking ever try cooling those two days or three With heavy weight I get tamping down . Mixing plays a part in bonding in to large granola bar

I like added apple crush and a cup of salt to mine when i make em also i use another bucket to pack it thwn when its packed i keep the a bucket in it and use a ratchet strap to compact it even more..48 hrs later hard as a rock

When you compact the block in the bucket would be a good time to include some type of anchor in case you have trouble with the blocks being rolled out of the camera view or rolled out of your shooting lane.

Find you some aluminum pots the size of the blocks, mix, bake and cure in the pots, take to where you want them and dump out the block, it would be way more efficient.

Great video guys keep it coming I've used similar feed blocks that I've made I recommend adding cinnamon the generic works just fine and brown sugar brown sugar helps also in keeping it all together I put my feed block in a laundry bag and keep it off the ground so how's won't get to it but just high enough for deer good luck guys

Yes that would work too! Getting a large barrel or heavy duty plastic tub works just as good. These smaller blocks are a little bit easier to pack and a bit more mobile, but don’t last as long as a large licking tub.

I can't do that where I live . Big trouble . Homeowners can't even feed the deer in the dead of winter in NY. I've seen so many instances where wildlife management hurts the wildlife more than helping it.

Here at J&T Outdoors we try to have the healthiest deer heard we can. We believe trophy rocks help us do that. We also recognize that many states prohibit mineral rocks due to CWD. Fortunately for us, we haven’t seen any cases in our counties.

I personally feed my deer year round not just the season helps with fawns and antler grown and all around health of all the animals that eat what I feed. When I 1st got my property it had minimal deer just traveling past. Now I been feeding deer have moved in and residents of my property. The bucks don't wander to far as I have watched them grow from fawns . The population has grown very very good and an lucky that we are allowed 12 deer a year since I have created a monster lol to many critters

Tell the NY game wardens there not deer blocks there for the birds they are bird feeders wich isn't illegal and watch those big antler having birds come right in NY as a big problem with to many deers in certian parts why pay snipers and stupid neutering to try and cull herds when hunters are way more effective and cost way less actually they spend money that goes back to conservationist thru the Pittman Robertson act

We typically only put these blocks out during the months just following deer season. When food supplies are low for the deer heard. The blocks work just as well in summer if packed well. I would suggest going heavy on the corn syrup if conditions are warmer.

Idk where you guys live but I’ve made several blocks with these ingredients and the deer won’t even try them. It’s winter in the north east and our deer usually eat anything available. I’ve even added triple corn to the mix ave nothing. I’d stick to corn, shell less-sunflower seeds and store sold nutrition blocks. Good idea but bad results here.
