Great tip on making the ruler with the gate hinge. As a tip for folks, if the hinge is swinging too loose, you can always try to squash it out of shape a little with some heavy duty pliers or a hammer with it protected with a towel or the like to prevent gashes (before you glue it). You can also make a similar ruler with a long board, some stick-on measuring tape applied (I prefer Starrett or Komelon for quality) and use a wood block cut with a miter saw on one end. Extra cheap is inscribing the needed measurements yourself with an accurate ruler on the wood. In the eyes of a woodworker, so many options! :)

Great video. A tip on the strap hinge if it swings too freely. Take the pin out and put a small bend in the pin with a hammer. Have done this many times on door hinges to help keep older doors in place and not swinging freely. Doesn’t take much.

Great video. I built a ruler similar to what was suggested here. Works well, However, ended up with something like an eighth of an inch discrepancy with what was measured vs. what was real. ended up as a result of (I believe) the gap that was created when moving the hinge from 90 degrees to 60 degrees or whatever. just a little bit extra gap throwing the true measurement off.
@williamevans6142
@williamevans6142 Ай бұрын
Correct. The 60 degree axis point must be at the start of the ruler. There’s definitely a good 3 to 4mm gap with his.

The hinge on this is offset from the end of the rule by nature. So the more open the hinge the bigger the gap will end up being between the end of the rule and the reference surface. I’m guessing this is small enough to not overly matter so long as it’s consistent and you’re not right up against length limits (in which case you’d probably want a more precise tool anyway)?

Thanks for 3 excellent tips. I watch all your videos and always learn a lot. A quick question: I’m building some irons using lightweight (95g) steel shafts and by adding 10g brass tip weights can get swingweight up to D0, but I need 4 more grams in the head to get to my preferred D2-3. 10g tip weights seem to be the largest. Lead tape is the obvious solution, but does anything more elegant occur to you? Thanks!
@EFGMC
@EFGMC 2 жыл бұрын
Not unless you get heavier heads to start with. Never assume though that just because you liked D2 in a different setup that you will still like it in this new variation. I would build them at D0 or at least one club, and go to the range with some lead tape to see if D2 is still the best option with this setup.

I think the ruler and hinge is a great idea. The length should be accurate but how accurate will the lie be due to the ruler with the hinge under it?
@EFGMC
@EFGMC 2 жыл бұрын
You just use the hinge to match the specific lie of that club. This is obviously different from the 60 degree rule used by the USGA / R&A however it has minimal impact. Did a video showing this as well. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6GwdaqYhNupgMU

Like the ruler idea. USGA standard is to measure the club at 60* angle. Wonder if you could permanently fix the hinge at 60*.
@EFGMC

You could. The only time it matters though is when building a driver close to the legal length limit.
@erock1070

@EFGMC
@EFGMC 2 жыл бұрын
@@erock1070 Can't answer that. Every OEM measures differently and has a different standard. Throw in the current lack of quality control and it's a complete mess. Consistency is the best method. Whatever you do, always do it that way.

Most people and OEMs will measure to the very end of the grip, but some don't. There is no standard for this stuff so you just need to make sure you always use the same method and measure against someones existing clubs for reference.

Good Video AJ. Do you have any tips to get a grip started over the end of the shaft? I use Midsize Golf Pride Tour Wraps with 3 wraps of tape, but I also build in a rib on the underside of the shaft. I use grip solvent, but it's pretty tough to persuade the narrow end of the grip to start over the widest part of the shaft. Thanks.
@EFGMC
@EFGMC 2 жыл бұрын
You can still buy a grip install tool I believe. It was originally made to help install Taylormade grips over the old Bubble shaft that had a .950 tip. Other than that, just use plenty of good solvent and start at a 45 degree angle until the grip goes over the shaft tip.
@dale193
@dale193 2 жыл бұрын
I also find that if you pinch the grip about 3/4" from its open end sometimes that makes it easier to get the grip started all the way around the butt end of the shaft.

Thanks for making this video👍I’m trying to weight some graphite iron shafts and swingweight sitting at c9 so going to use some lead powder as don’t like lead tape especially the amount I would need. Only thing is traditional cork doesn’t fit! What would you use on a narrower shaft ?
@EFGMC
@EFGMC 2 жыл бұрын
Go to Golfworks.com They sell corks for both steel and graphite shafts. Be aware you are going to likely need a lot more weight using powder in graphite shafts vs lead tape because the internal diameter is narrow and the weight sits farther away from the head of the club.

I was fitted with 85g graphite shafts, but I hate them…can’t feel the club anywhere in the swing and feel like I can’t get the club on the ball anymore. After testing a number of iron shafts, settled on AMT White S300 shafts. My only issue is I don’t have a graphite shaft puller…do you have a preferred/recommended work around for that, or do I need to bite the bullet and just get one…or I guess I can have my local Golf Galaxy just pull the shafts for me and I’ll do the rest…Thanks!

If you are wanting to save the graphite shafts then you will need a puller or have someone do it. If you plan on trashing them, then you can just heat and twist out. It will destroy them fyi.
