A couple of tips stood out like a Stallion in a paddock full of fine fillies. Home-made cables should always have jacket pinched inside the crimp for strength but also to keep the twists all the way to the end as much as possible. Those pictured there are crap. Switches, any that are passively cooled, mount sideways to allow convective airflow to move through, they have holes on the sides for a reason. Active cooled can be side or with ports facing down. Facing to top like yours just catches dust and crap.

TBH as long as he inst moving around the cables to much it should not be an issue, and those switches stay pretty cool unless you are hitting them with a lot of data which in a home setting like his, is not going to be an issue.

Actually, the proper way to install is to bring the cables to a patch panel and the patch cords from the panel to the switch. I cringe every time I see someone do something like what I see here. In my own home, I have 2 cables running from my living room and bedroom to my "office", thanks to my cable ISP, and a 3rd I added later for my AP. They terminate on keystone connectors mounted in boxes attached to the wall just inside my closet and then patch cords the the rest of the way. The other ends also terminate in keystones. I don't bother with making up patch cords, except special situations. Patch cords are cheap. Don't waste your time making your own.

A few points from a guy who has done this sort of thing for a living. 1) I'd consider your install a mess and I'm not OCD. 2) Terminate those cables on a patch panel. 3) Instead of using an all in one router and mesh, go right to proper router and access points 4) Why are you calling switches "hubs"? Hubs are obsolete gear which are half duplex and almost all run at only 10 Mb, though some do 100 Mb. 5) I would not go with TP-Link, as some of their gear has problems with multicasts and VLANs, where multicasts from the native LAN leak into the VLANs. 6) I noticed you plugged power into that mesh device. With proper APs you can use Power over Ethernet (PoE), so you don't have to worry about finding AC power nearby. 7) Also, with proper APs you can have mulitple SSIDs (with VLANs back to the router) to support guest Wifi and more 8) As someone else mentioned, your connections are crap. Instead of doing that, terminate on a patch panel and use pre-made patch cords. In my network, I have a cable modem with a 500/20 connection, though I get much better than that. I also have Pfsense running on a Qotom mini PC for my router. I have a Cisco 8 port Gb switch and a Ubiquiti Unifi AC-Lite access point, which is mounted in my laundry room, where it's roughly in the middle of my condo. I also have a 5 port switch in the living room for the devices there.

You should have someone who knows what they are doing come and re-terminate those ethernet cables. The wires shouldn't be exposed outside the connector. Having them terminated like that means anytime you move any cable it's gonna put tension on the individual wires and it's very likely you'll have a wire fail on you at some point. The outer protective sleeve should extend up into the connector so the pressure is on the sleeve of the cable instead of the individual wires. I'd also recommend sticking the rubber strain relief boots on them for an extra preventative measure.

Even better, get some CAT6 shielded cable with factory ends so that you're future proof. I'm sure that cable is 5E.

Beat me to it, but I definitely second this comment by @Zito! Those stranded copper wires have flex but aren’t strong individually and need all the support they can get.
@arlemooldijk1595
@arlemooldijk1595 10 ай бұрын
@@AllenLidar As long as his switches support 1 Gbps max, using CAT5e isn't an issue and going CAT6 is not going to bring anything extra. With 10 Gbps switches it's not going to be troublefree with CAT5e and you need at least CAT6 (maximum length about 55 meters) or upgrade to CAT6A (up to 100 meters). Shielded is normally not needed in a household. But I agree on using factory made patch cables, though. 😉

Great setup. One suggestion if I may. I have the same router and you are correct, it gets pretty hot. So much that it was having a problem keeping cool in my setup. I solved the issue by installing a laptop chill pad underneath the router and it is powered via USB which is the router has USB ports. It's been working great for the past 2 years. The chill pad is fairly quiet and I understand it runs constantly, but the good thing is it's fairly cheap to replace if needed.

Good tip, my router also has a single USB port (usually intended for a USB stick or hard drive I think for sharing, but with a NAS not necessary), so clever use of the existing port. Luckily my router doesn't run that hot but I'll definitely keep this in mind if I switch to a different one.

Your cable organization looks very nice and clean. However, though it might not look as pretty in your particular configuration, it is a best practice to install wall mounted networking/telecom equipment with the connectors pointing DOWNWARD toward the floor. Otherwise any debris that falls from above could fall into the RJ-45 keystones and create a faulty connection when plugged into. Thus, your switch is currently upside-down. My personal preference is to mount all my network switches and servers in racks and make use of patch panels to keep cables nicely organized. Being that my home network is actually for our commercial farm and creamery, I use Cisco enterprise and business equipment plus a management station to monitor the health of the system.
@zito88
@zito88 2 жыл бұрын
This is also backup up and evident by the fact that the printing on the switch is upside down when mounted with the ports up.
@G1NZOU
@G1NZOU 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's better, though if that TP-Link switch is anything like my Netgear 8 and 5 port switches, the mountings on the back intend for you to mount it with the ports facing upward or sideways, not downwards. I'd definitely install a patch panel for my own network if it gets any bigger than it is already though, and a small rack for a main switch.

Steve if you want to get to the 1000Mb speed, you may want to check your cabling make sure it's either CAT 5E or CAT 6. You will need that to get to the maximum speed that you can.. You also really want to re-do those RJ-45 jacks going into your hub, they are really poorly done. The 6 wires coming out of your jack shouldn't be exposed like that, you will have issues with something called "crosstalk" which just means that cables are getting outside interference. Those tiny wires should be completely in shielding (in this case plastic cover) right into the RJ-45 jack. That will help fight the "crosstalk" issue. I'm not a network tech, but an multimedia tech and we deal with this kinda thing all the time. Great video, keep up the great work!

Hey Ricky, thanks for the advice! That's how the cables looked when we moved in. Thankfully the house came standard with Cat5e. I considered upgrading to Cat6 but it was an extra $200 PER CABLE! I thought that price was ridiculous. haha I've never crimped new connectors on my cables before but it seems like a relatively fun project to try out.

I agree with Ricky Jones. At minimum, recrimp ALL of those RJ-45’s. There is a lot of tension on the individual wires. Lookup how to crimp them properly, and it will make difference. If the cable is CAT 5e, you don’t really need to upgrade the cable, it will support gigabit just fine. However, it is also possible you can rewire all of the cable drops yourself, join a Cat 6 cable to an existing cable and CAREFULLY pull it through. I wouldn’t bother unless I had a real ggod reason to do so. Fixing the RJ’s definitely do that. Also get rid of the flat wire. For your short cables in the wire panel, go ahead and upgrade them to CAT 7 cables, for the shielding.

That setup can be improved greatly. Remove that google AP from that cabinet. Its essentially a faraday cage, then having an electrical outlet on either side of it you are destroying your wifi signal off that particular AP. If your other AP's are have a wired backbone to the main unit you may not notice wifi issues but if the slave AP's connect wifi to the master then you will have issues when on wifi.

Stumbled across this, lovely to see how you did it. However a few pointers. you mentioned you wanted the fastest speed to upload your video's in 4k. Yet you create a double star network. If i were you i would atleast connect every switch directly to the router (if possible ofcourse). cause right now you have a 1/16 division on the first switch, and a 1/8 division on the 2nd switch. Meaning . . . if fully saturated and equally split, your 2nd router only gets a total bandwidth of 1gb/16 = 62,5mb. So even if nothing in the home uses internet, it can still clog your acces to the internet. (for example, if a member of the household is writing to the synology at 1gb/s you have nothing left for your 8 port switch to connect to the router and thus the internet)

I’m glad you liked it and thank you for the feedback. Sadly the Google Nest WiFi router only has 1 port on the back for a single device or a switch to be plugged into. The good news is that I’m the only one in the house needing high bandwidth.

Internet in Australia is absolute rubbish. I used to have 1-3Mbps speeds with frequent dropouts on ADSL and 4G broadband. Only 3 years ago, fibre became available to our home and office (metro Melbourne). Most ISP offer speeds from 25-100Mbps down and 20Mbps up.

Yes, daisy chaining is not the best solution here unless there is a very specific managed switch with a fiber or other high speed cable port that allows sending data from the router through various switches strung together. He is just using a set of standard unmanaged switches, which can cause network congestion. One router LAN out to one switch if at all possible. If you need more Ethernet connections at a particular site, get a larger switch.

Recently my city also installed Fiber to the building infrastructure for the whole city and I think they're almost done rolling it out, apparently over 80% of homes can sign up for Gigabit fibre as of this year. Hope you guys get better infrastructure rolled out to you soon.

Everyone here 1st starts by saying "great setup Steve", then proceeds to tell Steve how he should of done it better. Like everyone is a expert. And every suggestion seems different than the last suggestion. STEVE: Fantastic video and amazing work! I learnt a lot. Thank you. QUESTION: I have Netselect panels in my garage for coax and a 2nd one for ethernet. All pre-wired. But NON of my jacks have internet. Only wifi works. How do I connect a switch or hub to the preexisting ports in my garage so that every jack has active ethernet ports? This video didn't seem to help me figure that out. What I am thinking: Modem to the garage. Cable from OUT on Netselect COAX panel to Modem. Ethernet from Modem to HUB. Ethernets from HUB to all jacks in garage. Makes all jacks through out house HOT?

Ok, since it seems like you are a fiber expert here, I have a super super super important question that I just don't know if Im understanding correctly.... So I have fiber internet gig up and gig down (centurylink) in Seattle. I have my current modem/router set into bridge mode because I was gifted an AC2000 Nighthawk, and it was running flawlessly. Then, water damage to the centurylink bridged modem which connects to the ONT on my wall then to the power line yada yada. My question is.. DO i need another modem / router combo thing to turn into bridge mode, and then connect to the nighthawk, OR is there another way to connect either the ONT to a different, cheaper modem type thing and then to the router? To essentially just get internet to the router, of course Centurylink never ever helped me out with an answer, and its really hard to find stuff online for it. Thank you so much !!!
@techmaster170
@techmaster170 2 жыл бұрын
The water damage was to the fiber modem provided by your ISP? Is it no longer working? If it was provided by your ISP, then they would need to supply you with another. If you wanted to buy your own, you'd still need to contact your isp if they'd even allow that. Could be only their equipment is allowed to connect to their network. I recently got fiber about 6 months ago. Went from 1mbps down and up to 1gbps down/up.

Steve, I would bring from the router to the switch first then on to the AP. Since you are doing the opposite I wonder what kind of hit you will have doing your way. I have COMCAST fiber which gives me about 87Mbps (They rate and charge me for 100). BTW I really like your closet org.

Not a techie at all here but I want a wired connection in my downstairs office. My home is new with every room with a coaxial and ethernet outlet. I see you have coaxial cable and ethernet in your panel like mine. Unfortunately, my panel was installed in the garage. My modem is connected to a coaxial cable in a bedroom on the main floor. I have all of these unconnected (coaxial & ethernet) cables but just the one coaxial cable connected to a splitter for 2. I assume one of those is for my modem. The other, who knows. How does one get the ethernet to work in the panel?
@davidhalley9795
@davidhalley9795 2 жыл бұрын
@Paul Jameson I figured it out. Yes, there’s a coax cable going into modem from the wall and from there an Ethernet to my Wi-Fi router . There are three ports on my router. I ran an Ethernet cable from my router to the Ethernet wall outlet, found the Ethernet cable in the garage panel labeled to the first office, connected it to a five port switch box and plugged in the cable to the office downstairs. Works like a charm!

Personally I wouldn't have put the AP / router in the cabinet. Would have found a room that had two Ethernet drops and used that instead since they all feedback to the cabinet. Also it looks like multiple cables are plugged into the AT&T box, are those required? Do you have to use AT&T's equipment? I know for verizon I can use my own router just connected to their ONT box.
@JJFlores197
@JJFlores197 2 жыл бұрын
AT&T doesn't let you use your own modem. With the legacy DSL service that they have largely abandoned, you could use use your own DSL modem. The "new" DSL service and fiber internet service requires you to use their gateway only. They don't use PPPoE and instead use some proprietary authentication making it very difficult, if not impossible to use anything other than the gateway they give you. You can use a 3rd party router by configuring IP pass through or DMZ+ depending on the gateway you have.
@dan_hitchman007
@dan_hitchman007 Жыл бұрын
@@JJFlores197 I think it depends on the ONT they use. Some can be configured at the home office to shut off the gateway and wi-fi and allow the ONT to act solely as a modem with WAN port. Then you can attach it to your own router and network.
