Great video. I also use Netgear products on my network except for one unmanaged switch. I have a Netgear Docsis 3.1 cable modem connected to my ISP service. This saves me on the ISP’s monthly charge of renting their modem. Then I have the Netgear Orbi for my wifi. The one non-Netgear device is a unmanaged TP-Link gigabit 8 port switch. All networking devices are connected via Cat 8 caving which has speed capabilities of up to 40gbps.

Cat 8 is badass to have ran through your house already. But just a word of advice is that only 1g of data transmission can occur over that 40g potential cable due to the gigabyte switch. As well as the isp’s of today only provide 1-2g max you’re surely future proofed ! if you desire to get more than 1/40th of your potential transmission of data you’re going to want to get something like a Cisco catalyst switch and use the sfp ports. But still these would only be useful if running a Lan network with high traffic, such as a really high quality camera system running 4k @ 30fps. Rather than connecting to a wan which is very limited. Im an electrician and data technician so this is my job !

Those Orbi pros are nice! But one thing I noticed, is your AT&T gateway in a bridge mode? You had 4 ethernet cables coming out the back of it, you should only have 1 to the router and 1 coming from your ONT. Everything else should be hooked to the netgear. Your current setup you would have a Double NAT issue.

The other cables plugged directly into the cable modem are for my Alarm system. The techs weren't able to get the system to work otherwise. I'm sure it's possible, they just couldn't figure it out.

@@SteveDOES It most likely didnt work due to the double nat issue. Everything that goes through your Orbi gets firewalled, but then gets firewalled again through the AT&T box. DId you try DMZ'ing the IP your orbi gets in the AT&T modem? That may fix your alarm issue.

Great video and so kind of Netgear to supply you with the gear. One thing I noticed in this video is you still have the Router from your ISP. You have fiber for the internet. The device that your ISP is renting(unless you purchased it) to you is a router and not a modem. I have Verizon FiOS and I am in the process of planning the upgrade to my network. Removing the ISP router is high on the list of things that need to change. Once I get the internet switched from Coax out of the ONT to the ethernet port for internet this will then go into my Netgear NightHawk WiFi 6 router to be the main interface from my ISP to my network for internet. The ethernet cable that comes from the ONT to the ISP router can go straight into the WAN port of the ORBI Router. There are videos on KZbin on how to do it. As someone else said you have a double NAT issue. You also may see better speeds with only one router instead of two, I am still researching this for my own knowledge. Hopefully a follow up video would be in order to show how your network cabinet got even cleaner as well as showing that an additional router is not needed.

pretty solid signal down the street and you must have fiber internet. some of us don't get fiber, then their are rural customers who don't get anything or have to rely on cellular or satellite internet through Starlink.

If the cable is electrically terminated properly then it will work fine even if the outer PVC is not managed properly, but any stress on the connector will cause issues, though proper termination is always best.

Correct. It works electrically but terminating cables with wires exposed not only looks hideous but is also a weak connection between the plug and the cable. It defeats the purpose of the crimping tool, which is supposed to crimp down on the outer jacket for a strong connection that can't be easily pulled out.

Love the upgrades!! I have 3 WAX214s and a gs308poe+ waiting for me to install in my new house. It is currently being built and cant wait. I have it all figured out in my head but Im so ready to see it. The house should be done by July this year. Its around 3200sq 2 story so I figure 3 should be a little overkill but I don’t want to lose signal :). Is your panel in your pantry? My pantry is the more centralized location that I think I will run all my wires to kind of like you have yours in the wall there. I have a security camera system I am going to hard wire also to it so I need it to be more centralized so I wont have to buy extensions or go over the maximum distance with the cords. You will want to ge the AP out of the closet and mounted higher up. Clothes and any solid dense object will reduce signal stregnth. Anthing that will hurt a FM radio signal will hurt wifi both are a RF signal.

Steve, great video. I have two WAC540 connected to my network. I was having issues with Wi-Fi, so I disabled the Comcast Wi-Fi and I purchased two AP'S. I connected each AP to the modem directly. I learned recently that if I was to use the second port on a Root AP, in order for MESH feature to function correctly, the second AP needs to be set to the same IP as the root AP. I'm looking to purchase the Netgear GS316ep as well but really want to be able to setup multiple VLAN's. Do you plan to do a video of how you did that?

Tip add all of your old equipment to your new network and you can have multiple guest Networks and use all of your old ethernet switches to add Network ports in your house for the future you can use your old router as a access point with a switch and you can hardwire all your devices with it and you can also use your Google Wi-Fi and everything else you used to use with the new network as well and it would work great

Couple of suggestions that I would with your setup. 1. Ditch the unmanaged switch and get a managed switch to set vlans on your smart hubs. They pose a security risk 2. Ditch the unmanaged switch all together and utilize the 16 port switch. 2a. Pretty sure your home is running cat5e in the house. So I switch over to wireless to utilize the WiFi 6 (better up and down speeds…but more ping) for the devices that can be wireless like your tv. I would keep your pc and your server hooked up to the lan port. 3. (tip)Set vlans for all your wireless devices My setup: - protectli 4 vault running pfense - connected to my GS316EP - I have 6 Poe cameras and 2 WAX615 APs connected - I have an additional vlan switch in case I expand. But instead I don’t have any devices connected to the lan ports in my home. I rather the AP and protectli with pfense watch them. Due to smart devices like tv have more functionality over WiFi I have vlans setup on all three devices. Now my fridge, smart hubs, guest network devices, and etc all have their own security values.

The vlan for the smart hubs is covered through the router... He stated that at the end of the video. The unmanaged switch is working as a passthrough to the router. Why would he need a managed switch when hes covered by the router.

Hi Steve, as I noticed you placed the Orbi Wifi extender inside the closet and had few questions about the same. May I know what is the bandwidth you get from the Orbi extender from your closet additionally how far are the devices used from the closet and how many devices do you connect to the closet Orbi extender. I enjoy your videos but several issues with your tech setup, the protective film on the OLED TV can cause overheating and panel damage, I would remove it ASAP. The Arlo hub is a WiFi hub and should not be placed so close to your main WiFi AP as it could cause interference, perhaps move it to a different room?

Howdy... I know this is a 2 year old video, but what are you using to get your things to "stick" in your tech closet. I have tried velcro, 2 way tape and NOTHING is working!! As you said not a network guy so gotta b careful. Does that ap have a 10gig port? Even 2 2.5 hig ports only nets you 5gig transfer. I assume it only has 1 which would mean max transfer speed if 1 gig :) other than that loved the video. Don't take comment personal even vendor reps say the same I then ask does your company have patent on that? They always respond with "patent on what?" And I say sending 6gig throughput through a 1 gig port

That in wall box is HUUUUGE. They only installed a 14inch square box in my house a few years ago. Wasn't space to put a WiFi access point inside, so I had to wall mount it beside the box. My box is near the ceiling, so I need a ladder to do anything.

@@CCross777 yes do that, but they have to run fiber all the way inside the panel. Which is usually a charge. I recommend purchasing your own fiber spool and run the line from the media panel to the demarc outside your house or wherever the fiber drop is located at.

He is sponsored by Netgear. So he has to use more than one product that could have acheived with just one. He could've absolutely used another satellite instead of that access point. Also he should do the at&t (or any fiber) modem in the bridge mode to avoid double nat. Also need to ensure modem is in the ip fixed and passthru mode with all thebpacket filters off. He hasnt shown half of the things.

no internet provider does provide a 1GB which is 1024 mbps, the max you will get will be 940mbps

They never give you the exact 1 Gb speed. It's always a little less because most 1 Gb devices don't actually do a true 1 Gb throughput and the circuitry would probably end up saturated beyond what they are capable of. Even prosumer stuff from TP-Link Omada show their specs as being capped at 940 give or take. Most people have not moved over to 2.5 Gbps or 10 Gbps for extra headroom.

I haven't seen any real upgrade bar for the WiFi-6 device and the extended coverage it provides. Generally you just swapped network equipment, no? You didn't show if you have any WiFi6 stations that would take the benefit of the WiFi6 Router and AP, there are no PoE devices that would take the benefit of the Netgear Switch PoE ports. The TP-Link Switch is Gigabit, just like the Netgear one. So ideally you just tossed off TP-Link in favor of Netgear because you got the Netgear devices to promote them. Your network is limited to what your devices connectivity speed requirements (WiFi and Cable) are. I'd have loved to see a TRUE upgrade. What you presented is just a simple equipment/vendor swap.

Good job, PLEASE be a good neighbor and turn down the power on your APs being 3 house's down and still being able to connect to your wifi although nice what you are doing is causing wifi issues for your neighbors. If your neighbors are doing home automation also. A lot of zigbee runs on 2.4Ghz and so doesn't your network. Plus on 5Ghz bump up to 40 or maybe if you can do it. 80Mhz (channel bonding) and watch your speeds go up also.

the stuff that netgear sends to you is screaming of incompatibility on each other, first, that PoE is basically useless when only 1 device where actually utilizing it, 2nd why send him 2 different wifi products when you can just end him 2-3 unit of the same standalone AP in the first place? all I can say is, this is more like a product showcase rather than a upgrade to be honest.

Have to forgive me but this is an overkill network for home use. No need to use an access point if you are already using a good quality mesh router. If it was a very large home or business than I can justify all this hardware. This is not a negative feedback it’s just that I can’t see the real benefit of having an access point in this environment. Also why a POE switch? What is the exact need? This is only needed for devices needing power over Ethernet like IP cameras. Save your money and get a more simpler and cheaper solution for home use. There is NO need to have all this hardware. This is clearly a promotional video by NETGEAR to have this KZbinr show off their unnecessary hardware.

Not sure how the router and satellites achieve 6000mbps when the outgoing ports are 2.5gbps. Not to mention that the router only has one 2.5gbps port so what does the 2.5 gbps port plug into, seems that everything is actually limited to 1gbps. Don’t believe the hype people. You can achieve the same results with cheaper components until the full chain of the hardware catches up and that is not likely to be anytime soon as manufacturers, again, seem keen to protect their more expensive business ranges.

Because there are normally only four LAN ports on the routers they give you and many, many devices need a network connection. You want to hardwire as much as possible and only rely on Wi-Fi for things like phones or iPads.

Ok I’m no expert here, but if you’ve flooded your near neighbourhood with wifi, isn’t this going to impact, potentially, on your neighbours own setup? Many people will be using heir own ISP’s router with feeble wifi coverage, which looks like it may be swamped by your own wifi. This isn’t the first video I’ve seen of someone over specifying their network with free stuff. Surely it’s just a little inconsiderate to have your own wifi extend massively beyond your own property boundary, just because you know - you can ?

It is correct. He chose to use the T568A standard instead of the common T568B standard. There is nothing wrong with using the A standard, it is just not the common one
