A reminder to everybody (I know maddie commented on it but wanted to elaborate), that your ordinary basic home, living pay check to pay check is also completely ok and the majority of people cannot lead this kinda life! You live your life, at your pace, with any money you have as long as you have a roof over your head, food in the fridge, health and clothes on your back ❤️

Love this! I work in the construction field, get quotes for millions of dollars of infrastructure work for my job, have a degree in engineering, and still workmen coming to quote some work on our home look to my husband to talk about what plumbing needs to be done. Love to see women talking about finances and making the decisions around spending on renovations, two very underrepresented industries!

I love that you speak up about a lot of things that many people shy away from - especially empowering women to be able to do their own DIY, deal with financial things and loads of other things. I live on my own and do everything myself. I am also a partner in a business with a male business partner. When I answer the phone or salespeople come in, they always assume I am the secretary - SO ANNOYING!!! Women will also assume I am the secretary. We still have a long ways to go!!!

Dear Madeleine, Oh my your video regarding women and finances was spot on! My story is this. My Dad told me don’t count on Social Security cause it may not be enough for you when you retire. That was 50 years ago. Live in the USA. I never made more then $30,000 a year and when I started my business as a personal chef I was making much less. My partner made much more money. But I started saving early and lived a frugal life style. I taught our daughter the values of savings and frugal living. At 70 years old I have a 6 figure retirement account. It’s possible.

When I purchased my first home from my rented flat, I thought the 3 week overlap I would be able to rip out all carpets, sand all wood, re plaster every ceiling and decorate every room whilst working full time. As soon as we got the keys we realised we needed to get the bathroom fully renovated. What I planned was not realistic at all. I underestimated the time it would take for me to take on these tasks as well as the hidden costs. It took us a year and half whilst living without carpets the whole time (we wanted this to be the finishing touch). So glad I managed to change my mindset and prioritise what we needed/wanted. It also helped to live in the house to decide how it worked best for us. Great advice on this video 👍🏻 x

Your message about women not being ashamed of their money hit home with me. I got lucky and landed a great job while I was in my first year of college. I was a salary employee at 20 years old. I've never felt comfortable talking about my finances with friends and it's kind of isolating... I hope you keep speaking about this topic! Maybe I will learn from your experience.
@thewatermillscotland3 жыл бұрын
This is why we are doing our renovation ourselves, with as few contractors as possible. Not only does it make for more fun (and videos to share) but the costs are so much more manageable. The wiring issue should have been picked up when plugging in a socket tester to ensure everything is correct - We're building our own windows as with a listed 250 year old building... well windows get expensive real fast, but the materials are only a tiny fraction of that cost.
@MadeleineOlivia3 жыл бұрын
The wiring issue is so much more complicated than I can easily explain on KZbin. It was a can of worms. Great that you’re able to do the renovations yourselves and have the skills and time to do that! Unfortunately I don’t have either 😭 Very exciting to be renovating a 250 year old listed building though! Side note: how does this comment have so many likes?! 🤔
@thewatermillscotland3 жыл бұрын
@@MadeleineOlivia 600 LIKES?! Thats... a lot. A lot of old UK places have really terrible wiring, we looked at a lot of places before going with our watermill, we would have scrapped all the wiring in every single one of them just due to their age, modern houses tend to have a lot more demand on the electrics than they used to - its definitely a good investment to have the place rewired - I was more trying to say he should have immediately seen the issue in basic checks without getting a tingle from the socket. Luckily he did catch it, or it could have been a... shocking... experience for you haha.

I’m very very surprised that they didn’t notice the lack of earthing when they tested, it’s one of the most important things to test for right at the start of any electrical job. So I’m surprised that the electricians went all that way without thoroughly checking for earthing arrangements before installing new fittings and then walking away.

I am the one who does all the money in my house (I'm an ex-banker). My hubby is a great business man. Will try and talk about this in a future video! Biggest tip though is to save as much deposit as you can and to not over extend yourself with the price of the house you choose. Best to have more manageable mortgage payments and a bigger deposit than stretch and be out of pocket if any problems occur or if you need to do anything to the house when you move in! Also check your credit score now and if there are any issues, sort it now!

I'll never understand what goes through the minds of people who get upset over women discussing finances. You can't even use the excuse that "men are supposed to provide the income, women stay at home" nonsense. It was very common for housewives to be the home's financial planner throughout history.
@MadeleineOlivia3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! It’s the patriarchy and internalised misogyny! A lot of these criticisms come from women because we are conditioned to be competitive with one another and also have deeply ingrained ideas of the position of men and women in society and our gender roles!

I am not sure who these people are? I know many women who share. My finance advisor is a woman. Great video and for those who would love to redo their home and short on cash, not the end of the world to live with what one has. It's okay to have an older stove or sink as long as these work. A coat of fresh paint is a great way to update and the rest okay as long as it works. I have old light fixtures in my bathrooms. Once in a while I think I should replace them and then think why? They work. I am not into renovation but have money saved for things that break. Hot water heaters. Roof, stove is gas and working great 20 years later. I am for structural repairs but to each their own.

This is fantastic! I agree with you wholeheartedly. Women do not talk about money enough. We spend money on stupid things to make ourselves look more affluent (expensive clothes, makeup, handbags), which actually make us less affluent. In reality, most of us don’t have a clue how to manage our money. I recently, through a very good friend, found a non-profit wealth manager who, after looking through my finances, insurance policies, debt, etc., is helping me figure out a better way to work my money with my short and long term goals in mind. Ladies…give your energy to your finances. If you can’t get outside advice, use the internet/KZbin to educate yourself. You don’t have to be a genius investor, you just need to make the most out of what you have. Talk to your friends, especially the men, and ask questions. Even if you have one income, you are probably not making the most of it.
@MadeleineOlivia3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I really hate that so much emphasis for women is put on things that lose money and spending it all on stuff, rather than focussing on investing our earnings or putting it into things for the long run. That is so amazing that you have found a non-profit wealth manager! Honestly the best thing we can all do is just start slowly and simply. Put your money somewhere! Great advice all around. Speak to your male friends, your family, watch KZbin videos, get a membership with Female Invest and start going with it.

Do your financial lenders not require you to have a full home inspection before you are approved for a mortgage? I know in Canada, if you forego this step, you have no recourse after you purchase and most banks will not lend you the money without one. Great advice. I would say that some of the items you regretted buying for your house that were left behind (such as restoring the floors, new shutters etc) would have added to the value of your house when you sold it. Even if it did not add the full amount you paid it would have also made it a more attractive purchase so help sell the house more quickly. I have never regretted any big spend on our properties in regards to updating except for the swimming pool in one property. The cost was $15,000AUD and only added about $5,000 to the value when we sold- apparently because of the time and cost involved in its upkeep. Having said that we got a good 10 years worth of use out of it. It was great when entertaining etc so we had a good time with it and as you can imagine in Australia we got to use it for many months per year .

That eyes were already described by Machado de Assis: “Lovers' language, give me an exact and poetic comparison to say what those eyes of Capitu were like. No image comes to mind that doesn't offend against the rules of good style, to say what they were and what they did to me. Undertow eyes? Why not? Undertow. That's the notion that the new expression put in my head. They held some kind of mysterious, active fluid, a force that dragged one in, like the undertow of a wave retreating from the shore on stormy days " and, in another part, he said: "eyes of gypsy obliqued and disguised".
