Home Theater Audio - What is ARC, HDCP, Toslink, SPDIF, Dolby Atmos?

This is a general overview of Home Theater Audio including surround formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS-X as well as audio cable types and surround sound configurations.
With TVs being so thin, they don't usually provide the best sound quality, which has caused most people to purchase a sound bar or home theater system. This video explains the best way to connect these devices for the best possible audio/video quality. HDMI provides the best connection for surround formats but it has caused issues when attempting to play HDCP protected 4K video.

He speaks so well. That was a joke, the truth is, this guy just broke down the audio hookup problems better than anyone I have heard and I've heard a bunch of them on KZbin and at the stores, no one seems to understand it all the way this dude here does. Thank you very much, please keep making videos for us.

I remember my first surround sound system in 1997 that was a Technics Dolby Surround/Pro Logic receiver/sound system with my Panasonic VHS Cassette player and TV. Then we added a Panasonic DVD player and using Component video and Optical audio cables we had Dolby Digital. I then in 2010 upgraded to a Blu Ray player and a 1080p HD TV with HDMI connections and a new Dolby True HD/DTS HD receiver. I guess my next purchase will be a full Dolby Atmos system with at least 4K.

Dolby Atmos this Dolby Atmos that, I think people should be made aware if you buy any kind of Dolby Atmos soundbar or AV/receiver to use through streaming you need to get yourself at least £1,000 TV (lg OLED 2017+ or other brand oled makers 2018 or newer) the only other option to receive Dolby Atmos would be through a Blu-ray player! and I don't think most people want to start buying discs! The industry should be better regulated so people are not miss-informed or missguided

Hello, I came by your video on Feb 24, 2022. I am in my learning mode. Congratulations on your superior video!! Perfect. That said, can you answer this... I am leaning about AVRs. I find some that have Atmos capability but do not have height speaker terminals. Why is this? Is there some artificial Atmos that these receivers do but without actual height speakers? You may sense some temporary ignorance in my question but that is because I am still in my leaning mode. Thank you.

Hi, I have a question and have been given multiple answers. My current setup is my sound bar is connected to my tv via ARC hdmi, and my 4K Apple TV is connected directly to the sound bar via hdmi. I would like to connect my gaming console, but have been told to either connect both my Apple TV and console to the tv to use it as the transmitter, or to keep the Apple TV connected to the sound bar and connect the console directly to the tv via hdmi. Can you please clarify which is the best option?

I don't care how long your videos are they are all worth the time. As long as they don't go over 12 hours I'm good. I'd say I'm pretty on top of new electronic settings etc. The reason I mentioned this is a few months ago I was in a Best Buy store and there was an elderly couple looking for a tv and the more the BB guy talked to them their eyes were as big as a dinner plate. I felt sorry for them so waited till the BB guy left and after, I spoke to them and was able to help them. But, technology is moving so fast that every time a buy something new I'm aware that in a year or two some new tech. will pop up. So thanks for the videos.

Hope someone can help with the following: I have a LG B7 Oled and considering buying the SJ9 soundbar (don't hate!). As I see both support HDCP 2.2. The TV decodes DTS-HD and Atmos (and they are backwards compatible I guess). The soundbar supports all the common formats. I want to know which problems with sound input/output I might have with the following setup: PS4 (which will connect to soundbar HDMI in) Set top box (connect to TV HDMI) Soundbar HDMI Arc out to TV HDMI Arc HDD via USB 3.0 to the TV Now, most movies I have on the HDD (but also can be played physically on PS4) and it is primarily from there that I watch - so my question is whether or not I have the optimal setup in this situation? Will DTS-HD be output through the soundbar if it encoded on the HDD in one of the supported formats? Or will I have to use physical copies of the movies?

Big up for background music (Mobb Deep - Survival of the Fittest). The best solution is to connect your gaming console or blue-ray player straight to the TV (if your TV is supporting eARC) and use eARC Hdmi intput to connect TV with your AV receiver. eARC (enhanced audio return channel) has bigger bandwidth so it can pass through full Dolby Atmos or DTS X. So if you are looking for new AV receiver in 2020 do not buy anything without eARC 😉

Sounds come from the front and back, right and left, above and *below* you. It will be the complete 3D surround sound.

Hi! This was a great video explaining an issue that I just realized I may have. I know this video is old, but hopefully I can get a confirmation! I just upgraded my family's home theater (haven't received the TV or UHD player yet), but decided not to upgrade the receiver because we're happy with the sound (no Dolby Atmos or DTS:X) and I didn't want to spend the money haha. The TV is Sony X90J and the UHD player is Panasonic DPUB820K. The receiver is an older Sony STR-HD540 which does NOT have HDCP 2.2. I didn't think it would be an issue since it has 4K passthrough (but with HDMI 1.4), but I'm wondering if I'm going to have any issues. The Panasonic UHD player can have HDMI Video to the TV and HDMI Audio (1.4) to the receiver. The Sony TV can have HDMI eARC out to the receiver. Will I still be able to get surround sound (Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD) from the TV apps and UHD player, or will the "handshake" not happen and there will be an issue?

Great info, only one thing, there is something wrong with your background music. It is as if some phone is stuck ringing, (you might want to check that)

"there's war going on outside no man is safe from... You can run but you cant hide forever from these streets that we done took... You walking with ya head down scared to look...you shook...cause ain't no such thing as halfway crooks....!" That premium sound in the background 👌🏾 on the strength of that paired with the content you putting out. Gotta hit the button and subscribe.

Can’t believe these companies didn’t just use the optical audio cable to handle “ARC” especially with controlling the volume of a soundbar

Yo what's good bro. Have a question great video by the way if I got the 2017 Sony Bravia Oled A1E Tv and just bought The Sony Dolby Atmos 4K sound bar HT-ST5000 connected with the Sony 4K hdr Blu-ray player UBP-X800 should that connect without that issue you were talking about towards the end

HDCP 2.2 should they are support with ☝🏻☝🏻those 3 devices I have?

Kurspro yes, each link in the device chain from the 4K Blu-ray player to your TV should support HDCP 2.2(not backwards compatible) or else you risk downgrading the resolution to 1080p.

Great video Chris. Extremely informative on all levels! I do miss the days when things were less complex! I just purchased a Samsung QLED 4k tv (Q60T). I'm now looking to purchase a wireless sound bar system. I'm looking at the SONOS beam without the bass unit or the SAMSUNG HW-Q70T 3.1.2ch Soundbar with Dolby Atmos / DTS:X. What's your opinion on either of them?

Nice video. I just bought a Samsung R450 2.1 soundbar and I have it hooked up to a Rogers nextbox via optical link. My Samsung NU8000 then connects to the soundbar via Bluetooth, so I can use the tv remote to control the soundbar. However, I'm having trouble getting good quality sound when watching content on the Rogers box when the soundbar is on the bluetooth input. If I change the input to D.in [optical link], then the sound drastically improves. Any ideas what might be going on?

Your solution at 7:50 does not work in my case(well it does and doesnt). Maybe for others as well. That works fine if you have just the one HDMI going to the TV as it did in your case. BUT I have 2 HDMI cables going to my TV. One from my 4k player and one from my receiver to watch my non4k programs and games. My receiver is NOT 4k but it is HDCP 2.2. I just picked up the Sony 4k BR player yesterday. This unit has 2 HDMI outputs. One I am using to output video to TV and the other one is AUDIO OUT only and is going to my receiver. The picture comes through beautifully on my TV but the sound cuts in and out on the receiver with the receiver showing HDCP error. I kept messing with settings on TV and receiver and BR player and no fix. On my TV I have 2 HDMI cables going into the TV. One is from my receiver for all my non-4k items. The 2ns cable is the one coming from the new 4k player. I noticed that when I unplugged the HDMI cable from the tv that was coming from the receiver, then the 4k worked perfectly...video and audio and the HDCP error on my receiver went away. When I plugged that HDMI from the receiver back to the TV the problem started again. Thoughts? Fixes?

Wow I’ve just learnt a lot from this video. I will share it on my fb!!Thank you!! Maybe you can help me with this. I have a new Onkyo 4K receiver and 4K bluray and LG 4K UHD LED. Now when I plug hdmi from bluray to receiver then monitor out to tv the picture is perfect, however the sound keeps dropping out. But if I plug hdmi straight to tv from bluray and then another hdmi from bluray to receiver it runs perfect. Any ideas? Thank u
