It's nice to see a HT build with gear that's not all too expensive but works good enough for the owner. This guy seems to get the most enjoyment of his room and not just a gear junkie who hardly uses their expensive toys

Thanks! I've looked at the 6040UB, but I will be able to splurge a little on my next projector. The JVC NX7 is on the top of my short list at the moment. I'm hoping by the time I'm ready to buy the street price will be a bit lower than MSRP... But yes, any of the Epsons would be a vast improvement over my current projector.

Great tour!! Always love these videos and this was nice and thorough. Good to see someone willing to show the warts, to shoot the awkward projector/screen adjustment, unaesthetic back of the the room treatments, or the storage behind the screen. We all have aspects of our theaters that are kept hidden when showing off, and it was nice to see the parts that most don't include in their tours. Kudos! Subscribed!

Thanks! I forgot to talk about the chipped paint by the back windows also. I had to remove the wood I used to have up, and it chipped the paint badly. I never got around to touching it up... I should probably do that. But yeah, I thought about cleaning up behind the screen, but I wanted it to be more real. I do admit, however, that I cleaned and dusted the projector and AV rack...

I have an SVS PB13 Ultra and it gets the job done it goes subsonic to where I can't hear it but I can feel it shaking my sofa. Enjoyed the tour. Your presentation is always entertaining. I have watched all your HTFTM videos. The information you provide has helped me decide on what I want in my HT. In your projector video you talk about the JVC Projector being the one you would purchase. Are you still interested in that or have you looked at Epson projector’s ? The models that are out now have all the features you talk about wanting and in a very affordable price range. The blacks may not be quite as dark but they are very good.

I am taking a second look at the Epsons. The 6050UB (not to be confused with the 6040UB) looks like it may be coming soon. It is not announced, but if you google 6050UB, you can find a manual for the 5050/6050UB on the Epson website. What it will come down to is if Epson's more recent implementation of 4K Enhancement (native1080 pixel shifted to create a "faux K" image) is better than JVC's implementation of E-Shift 5. Native contrast will also play a factor. Of course, if true 4K is your think, then the NX5 may be the answer, although performance wise, the NX7 is a more direct replacement for the X790... and it is twice the price at an $8K MSRP. Thanks for the positive comments! I'm glad I was able to provide some good info for you.

Looks interesting, but I would be concerned with scaling my PC screen down,, especially since I game and do my video editing on my HTPC. Although I suppose I could set the resolution to 1440x900 and see if my projector could display that natively. However, I have a really good shot at promotion this year, and my wife agreed I could get a new projector if I make it. Fingers crossed, and I have my eyes on a JVC NX7 if I can get a good deal. However, I'd probably be happy with the NX5 if I had to. Even the $1900 Epson 4010 would be a vast improvement over my current projector.

You get different types of home theater: One where it's a sterile, purely tech based space and one where it tries to replicate a true (mini )cinema experience with the decor, seating, lighting etc. The latter are the cool ones.

Very well thought out! Really Nice sound acoustically and electronically! Unfortunately we do not have a room in our home to put in a theater. We have a open concept ranch style with cathedral ceiling. I like your specter wall of Sound! but simply know place to put them Big Ass speakers, plus my wife would likely divorce me if she saw them in our living room! but your video really helped me go ahead an order a few things thanks to your video! I went a head and ordered kIipsch in ceiling and in wall because they do sound awesome! I also really liked the way add you added a Home Theater Pc again because of lack of space I built a mini itx that fits on her book shelf. Its Asock Fatal1ty AB350 Gaming-ITX/ac ,1tb WD black, Zotac Mini GTX 1080ti all in a little Cooler Master Elite 110. That being said I really liked that little keyboard great size for the coffee table can you please let me Know the make and model? I would to like to ask you a few more questions If you don't mind? What do you use as a internet feed to your with HTPC that you game with? Do use an optical out from your htpc into your receiver and If so, what softwear do you use to control your sound from home theater? I am not paying the money for a real 4k laser projector I don't want to spend 6 to 12 Grande when tech changes and in 4 yrs. My common sense kicks and I will spend 2,000.00 and boy at that price there is a lot of them I still haven't picked that yet! thanks for the video.

The keyboard is a Logitech K400r. I use 802.11AC to connect to my router, and don't have any issues streaming netflix or Amazon Prime, although I only stream 1080 since my projector is not 4K. Also, I use audio over the HDMI cable into the receiver. This way I can use the Dolby TrueHD/DTS-MA soundtracks from the original Blu Rays.

Nice video. I am wondering though - how did you install the projector and screen so that the ceiling fan between does not become an issue?
@FamilyHomeTheater
@FamilyHomeTheater 5 жыл бұрын
Well... the chain does obscure a very small portion of the top unless I drape it over one of the lights. But the lights and fan are just above the light path. As long as you can draw a line from the top of the lens to the top of the screen without touching anything, you're good.

Would you recommend putting acoustic treatment behind speakers hidden behind the screen? I'm wanting to do a similar speakers-behind-screen setup but don't know how to setup those speakers.
@FamilyHomeTheater
@FamilyHomeTheater 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! That is how mine is set up. The guidance I went off of is that the front wall should be acoustically dead. So 1" mineral wool or rigid fiberglass (owens corning 703) wall to wall floor to ceiling. Then some treatment on the sides at the first reflections (ideally) or wherever the doors and windows allow. Treatment on the back wall is good also, especially if you have horn loaded speakers like Klipsch. I have a video on acoustic treatments also, but I don't mind answering more specific questions if you have any!

So the light switch can do a multizone setup even with 4 recessed lights wired together?
@FamilyHomeTheater
@FamilyHomeTheater 5 жыл бұрын
No, it controls one circuit with 6 can lights. The reason the front two go out on the lowest setting is they are a different brand from the rear 4. It was a lucky accidental discovery. I think the back 4 are Cree. The front two are WalMart Great Value. The WalMart ones won't stay lit at the lowest dimmer setting, which works out for us because we can have the front two lights off with the rest at the dimmest setting, and it doesn't require anything fancy.

So on your screen video I think you said you are 10 feet from the screen. Is that still the case? What are your thoughts being the close for watching tv and gaming. I'm looking at the exact same size with CIH but sitting 11 -12 feet away. How is it for longer gaming sessions?
@FamilyHomeTheater
@FamilyHomeTheater 5 жыл бұрын
That is still the case. I've done extended gaming and movie/tv watching and don't have any problems. But when I game, it is in 16:9 mode, so I am a little more than a screen width away at that point. A close seating distance may induce motion sickness in susceptible individuals, so having a second row helps in that regard. I definitely like gaming, especially with Dtar Citizen on a screen this big. It gives me a much more immersive experience in that everything on screen is essentially life size.

@FamilyHomeTheater
@FamilyHomeTheater 5 жыл бұрын
By HD DVD player, do you mean a Blu Ray player? Hmm. If you really want 3D, get the 3D Blu Ray player, provided you have some form of audio beyond the projector's built-in speaker. (A good set of headphones would work if you don't plan to watch with friends) Next, save up for a dedicated 5.1 amplifier. That way you are not wasting money on a piece of equipment you won't use once you upgrade. Good luck!

With using the spandex for screen and the subs behind it does it cause the spandex to move/ripple with the bass? Does it affect the picture and do u notice it?
@FamilyHomeTheater

Only during the hardest hitting scenes, which are relatively rare. The ports are below the screen, and they do cause the spandex below it to move. But it's generally not noticeable during movies. If anything, it adds to whatever just exploded on screen since it adds some "shake" to the scene! Its easier to explain a huge investment in home systems that can be high end..than it is for almost any other toy. I mean,we all watch TV and as much as we can. Only a car might be worth big money. Of course both can depreciate fast as new models come out. Just the nature of the beat..

Hi Dan.. I have the HC4000 as well and not sure whether you know about it but there is a 2.35:1 option on it. Once you set it there is no need to fiddle around with the projector anymore to switch between the two formats (2.35:1 & 16:9). Try it out and hope it helps.
@FamilyHomeTheater
@FamilyHomeTheater 5 жыл бұрын
Admittedly, I didn't know this. I'd been through the advanced menu, but it was on my way to the color management system. I did try it out tonight, but I'll stick with the zoom method for now. I'm running my projector though my home theater PC, and I noticed two things doing it this way. One was that the picture was noticeably dimmer. Of course, it would be equally dim when watching a 2.35:1 movie (which is why the "correct" way to do it is with an anamorphic lens), but it was noticeable. The other thing was that there was much decreased resolution when working on my computer, as I am as I type this. Again, the same as when I am zoomed, however, when zoomed for 2.35:1, I am viewing a movie with the pixels 1:1 mapped. However, when watching 16:9 content with the projector zoomed and the image scaled to fit within the 2.35:1 screen, my 1920x1080 output is being scaled down to 1452x817. So for general PC use, and while gaming, this wouldn't work well unless I can get windows to output a 1920x817 screen (which I may experiment with) If I can get windows to output that resolution, it may lean me towards a BenQ HT9060 as my next projector. While it does have zoom and lens shift, it is not motorized. However, being a 4K projector, the loss in resolution wouldn't be as egregious. Thanks!
@FamilyHomeTheater
@FamilyHomeTheater 5 жыл бұрын
Update: I was able to set my desktop resolution to 1920x820 through my nVidia control panel, and things are looking better now that it is 1:1 pixel mapped rather than scaled. I did some tests with Kodi, and it looks like even though it changes resolution for 16:9 titles, I can correct that by selecting a different aspect with my projector menu. Only thing left is to see how my games react, but so far so good. And having to render 260 less lines of resolution should help my framerate in games.

Awesome budget setup. Why did you not do a 16:9 screen and then mask the bottom and top for scope? Do your subwoofers shake the acoustically transparent screen and cause any issues with blurring in action scenes? I highly recommend you try Plex instead of Kodi, and see how you like it. If you do go Atmos check out RSLs inceiling speakers, they are good on a budget. I like that you did couches rather than "theater seats" - couches are more comfortable and less expensive. I think you should consider investing in an updated receiver, not so much for Atmos but so you can get Audyssey XT32. It works really well, way better than old Audyssey. My only gripe in your setup is probably what you love: the big DIY subwoofers. I think four smaller ones would have been better, because you could place them easier for more even room response. You likely have some big nulls and peaks in there now having both right in front like that. I realize sometimes that's just where they fit, I'm in a similar situation, but I wish I could have four small ones and place them perfectly in my room (I don't have a dedicated room so wiring is the issue).
@FamilyHomeTheater
@FamilyHomeTheater 5 жыл бұрын
The main reason for doing 2.35:1 is so that movies (at least, movies filmed in 2.35:1) are larger than TV. That and it is easier to mask the sides rather than the top and bottom. I haven't noticed any blurring with the screen. It only really shakes on the lowest and loudest scenes. It is mainly the black masking below the screen that shakes. My receiver is fine for now, but I will probably look into an Atmos enabled receiver once I get a 4K projector. I do need to work on my speaker spacing as I would probably have better response if I moved them further apart so that they are at the 1/4 width points. I plan to do a video on that in the future once I have time to remove the screen and mess with the setup. I'll also be experimenting with putting foam plugs in the ports to see how differently they respond in sealed mode.
@commanderrussels2612
@commanderrussels2612 5 жыл бұрын
@@FamilyHomeTheater If you masked the bottom and top rather than sides, would you still have to adjust your zoom for scope movies? Why is it important that your tv is smaller than film? Is it overwhelming larger? Seems like you'd still be okay with your seating distances, eye-balling it. I know a lot of people just feel it is wrong to have tv larger than film though.

It is about maximizing screen size also. Of course, to do it "properly", I would use an anamorphic lens so that I could use the full panel resolution to illuminate the screen even in 2.35:1 mode. But those lenses are expensive, so for me, doing the zoom is good enough. My next projector will have lens memory. I haven't yet narrowed down exactly which one it will be, but projectors without motorized lens memory need not apply. My short list: Epson 6050UB (unreleased) Epson LS10500 JVC X790R True 4K: JVC NX5 JVC NX7 Epson LS11000 (unreleased, unannounced, purely speculation that Epson will release a true 4K laser projector under $10K within the next year)

Just wondering about those monster subs - do they in fact shake the screen in front of them? That would be bad for the viewing experience.
@FamilyHomeTheater

I haven't really noticed it. If they do, it is only for a second or so during particularly intense scenes. When I played Bassotronics "Curtain Shaker", there is visible shaking on the screen: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXmWeqCYpLKYhNE But frequencies this low generally don't occurr in movies for more than a few seconds. I recently demoed the "Pods Emerge" scene from War of the Worlds and had it turned up... I didn't notice any screen shake. It probably did shake, but not enough for me to notice.

No, I dont. It is basically a wood frame wall, just without 2x4s in the center. It is built just a little smaller than the actual room, and is held up with a couple screws on either side that screw into the 2x4s behind the finished wall. It is meant to be easily removable rather than permanent.

You mention you are only running inuke 3000 for your subs. I'm planning 2 martysubs with dayton um 18's. From budget perspective, would the 6000 be worth the extra 200.00 to get? I doubt I would ever push them to ref levels. I just want to authoritive bass below 20hz.
@commanderrussels2612
@commanderrussels2612 5 жыл бұрын
I usually use this to answer that question: myhometheater.homestead.com/splcalculator.html . Remember a lot of times you run your subwoofers hot even if you don't listen at reference. If you never push your subwoofers to reference level and your room is a reasonable size, you might be better off choosing some smaller subwoofers you can place easier for better room response. I mean it is nice to have the output headroom, but, if you never are going to use it then why have the negative tradeoffs? People go nuts with subwoofers and make giant ones that are impossible to place correctly, and then they have two options: they can use all the headroom, place the subs poorly, and damage their hearing or they can waste the headroom and be forced to place their subs in not-ideal locations

Interesting site. with the 3000 delivering 900 RMS to the UM22, 10 feet away would be expected to be at 117 db's. Thats more than loud enough. But when reading recommendations on amp wattage, it suggests 2x the RMS of the speaker to avoid clipping under burst loads. On the other hand... that site also states that the same 88db speaker would read 104db at 100 watts feeding it. Still more than loud enough and Im only using 1/9th of the RMS power the amp can deliver. Now im really confused.
@commanderrussels2612
@commanderrussels2612 5 жыл бұрын
@@GTGrabber Our ears are less sensitive to bass, I think you would be disappointed with 104dB. Your calcs sound about right. Power delivers diminishing returns (every 3dB requires double the power!) and remember that every 6dB is DOUBLE the SPL, and every 10dB is a doubled perceived loudness. So the difference between 104dB and 114dB is double the perceived volume. My ears I'd rate on the sensitive side, and I run my subs so that they are at 115dB reference volume, and my mains a well below reference. With room gain one of your subs should be at reference volume 10ft away. With 2 you should get another 6dB in practice, so 121dB. That's pain territory, and certainly hearing loss territory. Bass is easier on us than high frequencies and most movies are quick bursts of it, but reference of 115dB is already super loud I wouldn't recommend tuning a system above that. Regarding your amp, rule of thumb is double the IEC so yeah you'd be looking at 2,000watts, but you can for sure get away with less for what you are trying to accomplish. I have subwoofers that take 800 each and I'm giving them 1000-watts each using an old Crest amp I had. Works great. If you are worried about it get a dbX DriveRack and use the limiter to make sure you never clip the amp. Or some amps have internal limiters you can set.
@FamilyHomeTheater
@FamilyHomeTheater 5 жыл бұрын
Another thing to consider is the subs excursion. The reason I went with the 3000 (and it is in stereo mode, not bridged) is because I easily reach excursion limits even with the 3000. (Excursion gets really high in the sub 20Hz range) So make sure you model your subwoofer using WinISD or similar modeling software, and make sure you aren't in danger of bottoming out your subs. Take it easy when testing, and increase power a little at a time. If you hear a heart stopping rattle begin, dial it back. I haven't bottomed my subs yet, but I'm sure I could easily do that with a 6000. Ideally, I'd like to build a couple sonotube subs to compliment my existing subs. (Or perhaps build 4 and replace the heavy MDF boxes entirely) But that is a bit down the road.
@commanderrussels2612
@commanderrussels2612 5 жыл бұрын
@@FamilyHomeTheater Yeah if doing a ported design you'll need to set a high pass filter depending on where the port is tuned, because the ultra low stuff the subwoofer will be very inefficient at reproducing. Otherwise it'll easily make funny noises when pushed with deep bass content. Based on what Grabber mentioned earlier about his listening tastes, I'd for sure go with sealed enclosures unless your room is gigantic. Plus the smaller enclosures will make proper placement easier. Those iNuke amps have DSP built in, or you can use a miniDSP or DriveRack. I'm a bit fan of dbX DriveRack units, where you can do your DSP and also use a limiter so once you do find the limit of your setup you can set the limiter just below it and never have to worry about funny noises or amp clipping.

Hi, I stumbled across your KZbin video about your home theater and thoroughly enjoyed it, however I would like to know how you mounted the Mitsubishi projector (which I own) on the ceiling. If at all possible I would like to contact you (by mail since I don't text or am not a techy guy) and you could explain to me how to do it since my projector has no vertical or horizontal lens shift according to the manufacturer. I've contacted Mitsubishi and several installers in my area and it seems like I can't do it with the metrics in my room... but you did. I would greatly appreciate you contacting me in someway to help me through doing this. Thanks again for your time and good luck with your future videos that I will now be watching.

Look to 4:51 and pause the video there. I'll explain the mount I a little more detail. In the plumbing section of any well stocked hardware store, look for the metal pipes. You will need two floor flanges and a short section of threaded pipe along with some appropriately sized nuts and bolts. One flange attaches to the ceiling... it is best if you have attic access to do this. If not, make absolutely certain you screw into a stud. Dont even try to use drywall anchors... they will pull out. The plate the projector attaches to is simply a piece of plexiglass, also available in larger hardware stores. All you have to do is drill the holes to attach the floor flange to, and the holes for the screws that hold the projector. To drill the holes to attach the plate to the projector, simply place the plate an the bottom of the projector and mark where the three screws go. (There are already threads installed in the bottom of the projector for this purpose) Take the plate to a work area (dont drill the holes while the plate is still sitting on the projector) and drill the holes big enough so that the screws you use slide freely through them without binding. I forget the thread size for the projector... I think it says on the bottom. Or you can completely remove the front adjustable foot and take that to the store with you. Simply get three long screws of the correct size and a wing nut for each screw. Now attach the projector as shown in this video. The wing nuts go above the plate. Tighten the screws all the way into the projector, but not super tight. You're not attaching a tire to a car here. They should be tight enough that the screws dont turn when you adjust the wing nuts. Once you have the whole assembly together, screw the plate with the projector attached into the pipe on the ceiling. (This can be a little tricky) once the assembly is screwed all the way in, turn on the projector and adjust the wing nuts on the three screws to square up the image in your screen. Once it is all good, you should only have to adjust the front wing nut when moving from 16:9 to 2.35:1. Also. Before you do anything, make sure that where you are mounting the projector is at the right spot so that you can zoom in and out to fill your screen in both 16:9 and 2.35:1 modes. You can simply handhold the projector while adjusting it to make sure you are in a good spot. Also take time to measure several times. Remember that the lens for this projector is offset. Dont mount the ceiling mount so thst the pipe lines up with the center of your screen... you want your LENS to line up with the center of your screen. Ideally you will not need to use any keystone adjustments. I hope this helps!

That would help, but this isn't our forever home. We may be moving in a year or so, so I want to minimize ceiling holes. Once we get into a home with an unfinished basement, I'll put more effort into doing it as correct as possible. Of course, I'll likely have to re-paint the ceiling anyway, so holes wouldn't hurt much. But there's also the Spouse Acceptance Factor to think about...

@FamilyHomeTheater
@FamilyHomeTheater 5 жыл бұрын
@@TypicalGuy84 You should be able to fit two rows in there. I have 4 feet of space behind my screen, so my actual sitting area is more like 12x20. And we had plenty of space to walk behind the back row and exit from the door in the back. So depending on your room's layout it can work. But if you are using the milliskin, sound like you are doing an acoustically transparent screen. So depending on the speakers you are putting behind it, you'll probably lose at least 2 feet from your dimensions. Still, I think it would work. You may just have a front row that is close to the screen (not a problem if you are doing 4K), or a back row that is up against the wall.
