Interesting! Stephanie was just 18 years old when she made this live TV appearance, and obviously already a consummate performer. Kind of amusing how she handled the orchestra's "clunker" at about 1:38 into the performance. BTW, this clip is from the 1975-1977 Sammy Davis, Jr. talk show, "Sammy and Friends." The women showering Stephanie at the end are Broadway legends and Tony Award winners Chita Rivera and Liza Minnelli, along with Sammy.

At 1:38 she is like, "Is this a joke?" Then, "Ok I'm going to have to make this work." Unbelievable performance for a child under difficult circumstances.

I don't know why I DO THIS TO MYSELF, but everytime she sings this song my eyes start immediately tearing up, for it touches me deeper than my mere words can express, and this obviously one of if not her first debuts of this song. Thank God for people like Ms. Mills whose delivery of words, can have so much impact and meaning in the lives, of anyone with a heart for family and friends alike to carry, with them for a lifetime.

I saw Stephanie Mills perform at a Screen Actors Guild fundraiser about 10-12 years ago in NYC and I was blown away! Her voice has got to be one of the strongest voices ever in the history of music. She literally does not need a microphone to sing. It's really a shame that she doesn't get the acclaim she deserves.

Stephanie Mills is the original and the best. I saw her in "The Wiz" back in 1975, and her performance is still unmatched. It is shameful she was overlooked for the movie, which was dreadful compared to the stage version. Her voice is unique, pure and innovative. Her smile is infectious, she posses classic beauty, and there is not an ounce of arrogance in her persona. Stephanie Mills is a brilliant star.

it was a business move. given a choice between someone with talent, and someone with a big name, they chose the big name. movie companies still do that. look at how many movies beyonce has been in despite her lack of talent and the high number of folks who would have fit those roles so much better. or them putting tyra banks in various roles, when she definitely sucks at acting. it's all about business. because in the end they're hoping the names will draw the crowds and bring in high sales numbers.

I remember clear as day when my mom took me to see this WIZ at The Kennedy Center when it was released. I don't think I was quite 10 years old. She was holding my hand walking into the Theater. Never forget that and how she worked to expose us to much as she could. It has shaped who I am and my love affair with music. It was incredible. Stephanie Mills is a wonder as a singer and Broadway actress. She is the little lady with Big Voice. Just amazing😍😍😍

I love Stephanie Mills. I remember as though it were only yesterday seeing her perform the role of Dorothy in the Broadway version of "The Wiz." She mesmerized the crowd, night after night, just as she did to Sammy Davis Jr., Chita Rivera, and Liza Minnelli, in this her first TV appearance. I only wish that you all could have seen her sing this song live, she was so moving, so incredible. In fact, after all these years, I still cry like a baby when I hear it. And although many, many other great singers have attempted to perform it, alas, they're just pretenders to the throne. There will only and always be only one Stephanie Mills.

The greater shame was that Diana Ross *stole* the role away from her for the movie version, which was a Kiss of Death for the movie.

Great performance. The orchestra kept the tempo very slow even when it's supposed to pick up the pace towards the end. This song is hard to sing normally but to slow it down on those powerful notes makes it even more challenging. Not surprised she was still able to sing it sounding like it was easy for her. Great talent! Can't believe she was 15/16 here!
