The toughest challenge for the developer would be to make it look as close to the original as possible without intense amounts of sprite flickering. This looks and sounds very good so far, but this game does some stuff that's impossible on the NES.
@Mjnerua Жыл бұрын
they actually designed levels with sprite flickering in mind

Shovel knight added 4 colors to the overall color palette of the nes, outside of that and a few minor things i think that could all be worked around.

Man. This has been in development for a while and there’s still no rom. A playable first level is all I want. It’s dumb this hasn’t been released it runs fine as long as level one is good don’t worry about the rest of the game. But then again, who am I? What do I know?

Nice demo. The flicker on the enemy sprites is a bit hard to overcome being that the NES hardware can only 8 sprites per scan line. I wonder if there is a way to solve that? My guess would be if someone would make use of the expansion port, maybe that can be achieved. The color Pallet of the demo reminds me of Mega Man 6 in Plantman's stage. You may be able to fake the background parallax if you can learn how to master IRQ's like in Batman the return of Joker. The sound is very close but of course you are at the mercy of the 5 channel sound, impressive though.
@retrones_software2 жыл бұрын
The limit of sprites per line of NES can not be exceeded beyond 8 sprites. There is no expansion option to solve this. The only way to give a solution, would be changing your PPU for another that improves these characteristics, and then ... it would not be NES anymore.
@evilskunk12 жыл бұрын
@@retrones_software It's too bad that no one has made that option as of yet. One way an expansion could be made to work would be to take note from Sega's add-on the 32 X. How that expands the power of the Genesis is that the graphics is partly handled by both the Genesis and the add on. If someone made an add-on you could have one or more additional PPUs that could add some extra layers and sprites to take the load off the internal PPU, thus ridding of flickering. Another thing that could be added would be additional sound channels. If done right it would be just a plug and play unit that would not change the base hardware in any way.

If you don't mind running emulators, more than one retroarch NES core has an option to remove the sprite per scan line limit.

this is smoke, shovel knight is impossible to port to a NES, just an interactable object would causeflickering problems with the Player, add to that the large number of enemies and projectiles that you should handle, there is no way. Remember, just 8 sprites per scanline...
@retrones_software2 жыл бұрын
What you see in the video is a reproduction of Shovel Knight programmed and adapted to the NES. It's just a small demo, and obviously porting the full game to this console would be complicated by those scanline technical details when we have a lot of enemies on screen, but not impossible if we cut corners. As seen in the video and program that Kasumi has made, it is possible.

@retrones_software3 жыл бұрын
It's not fake, and the NES can display that kind of graphics and colors. The original Shovel Knight was designed restricting its colors only to those in the NES palette. Anyway, we must not forget that this is only a technical demo developed by Kasumi, who already has great experience in programming things for the NES. RetroNES Software No it wasn’t, Shovel Knight uses 16-Bit graphics and an extensive color palette, while the NES features 8-Bit graphics with a very restrictive color palette. Plus, the NES is nowhere NEAR powerful enough to run this kind of game.
@retrones_software3 жыл бұрын
@Your Dad As I've explained before, it's just a TECHNICAL DEMO, not the full game. A demonstration of what this game could look like on the NES, taking the trouble to have programmed it to work on the same console. And sorry, but Shovel Knight is styled based on 8-bit video games, also using the NES color palette to make this clearer. And I'm not saying it alone, it's also made clear by its original creators: yachtclubgames.com/shovel-knight/
