Great vid Remember, if you have a lame 2 roller mill, you can roll the malt twice. You will get better malt if it whole and you roll it yourself. Some maltsters put the crap malt in the “already rolled” bin cause you can’t tell things like plump after it’s all crushed. Also malt lasts fresh a long time if it’s whole - not so much after it’s crushed.
@BillMcGirr2 жыл бұрын
True… but as a home distiller with a 26 gallon still. A 55 pound bag of malt is gone in a month or less. Hell… a 55 pound bag of both 2 row and malted wheat are gone in less than a month. And the store lets me mill it for free and leave the mess behind. All while charging me a whopping $55 per 55# bag of any malt I want. Of course… the fact that a BSG regional warehouse is 6-7 miles from my house probably helps slightly.🤷♂️🤣👍🥃

As a writer, I have to say that the concept of "I watch their videos and it motivates me to do x, y, and z" is actually a good thing. Contemporaries motivate each other. Writers are influenced by other writers all the time. Don't shy away from people who inspire you to do stuff. Keeps you moving.

Near the end you mentioned some mills dont turn the other rollers, is that because those adjustment knurled knobs are resting on the wood? Should they be in contact with the wood? Id think theyd need to be free and clear hanging in space, to be adjusted...

I have one of these Chinese Mills with a motor and it works great (hopefully the motor doesn't burn up). It's a little slow but it does the job. I mounted it to an Ikea cabinet and the Home Depot buckets fits right inside and there's hardly any dust. Also in case you haven't noticed Northern Brewer is charging $3.00 to mill your grains, so it may pay for itself eventually.

I found a great home brew and grain store about 20 minutes from my house. They sell most grains for $2 a pound. They’ve ordered me rye and 6 row barley in 55 pound bags for $85 a bag... And the mill it as part of the purchase. Great deal. They sell a 2 roller home mill for $125... But I figured why buy it if they mill it for me.🤷♂️ But I realize a lot of people don’t have a good shop near them. Cool video. Solid advice.💪👍🥃

Update… That shop went belly up.😵 But I found a new store 15 minutes away selling 55# bags for $55 of any malted grain. What a difference 2 years can make. Apparently malted grain is immune to idiot Biden’s price inflation. Although apparently it help that a BSG distribution warehouse is literally 6-7 miles from my house.🤷♂️🤣👍🥃

If anyone knows anything about the engineering behind how these mills work, are adjusted and produce what it is that you are expecting from it....you'd buy the 2 roller mill...the extra roller does absolutely butt nothing except get in the way of one side of the crush....your choice though, cos as it does nothing of value, it also does not do anything fundamentally different or negatively from that of a 2 roller...the true difference between the 2....they both crush grain...that's it
If you are willing to spend the big bucks, and want the Bentley of home mills, check out the MillMaster Grain Mill from MashMaster in Australia. It's expensive, like ~$300USD plus shipping and taxes. It's a 2 roller mill, but it uses fluted rollers instead of knurled, and they are both gear driven, so when you apply power to the shaft to power one of the rollers, a connecting gear powers the 2nd roller as well, so you don't get ripping and tearing of grains. I'm still saving up to buy one, stupid expensive, but it is what it is, and like you said, they last forever. www.mashmaster.com/p/4571858/millmaster-grain-mill.html Here is a video of it in action (powered by a motor) > kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWSUiHiheJ6fZtk There is also a new mill from Keg King, also in Australia, but it's only $150, has 3 knurled rollers, the top 2 are gear driven though, so it has the same benefit with the gears as the MillMaster. www.keg-king.com.au/maltmuncher-grain-mill-3-roller.html.html Video of it in action: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWPPp2eAf7ysr6c
