This trick works to fatten up instruments as well.

Absolutely! I almost never record acoustic guitar any other way.

Gotta just say how wonderful your technique of using red arrows and boxes is. Soooo much easier to follow. Why doesn't everyone do this?
@HomebrewAudioRecording2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Scott! Not sure why everyone doesn't do it. I just imagine myself watching it, and if I have any potential confusion as to where the cursor is going when I say "over here," etc., I assume others would too.

I noticed that when done in two extra tracks, one in right and one in left, and these two are about 15db less in volume, it creates interesting full sounds on vocals. It depends what you need it for but it makes some great effect on vocals in songs.

You can also go one step more and automate micro pitch changes on one of the tracks. Great demo.
@HomebrewAudioRecording2 жыл бұрын
Yes. I toyed with adding that info, but I figured pitch differences was covered under "inflections" (sorta), and didn't want to make the video longer. But yes indeed! Pitch differences are actually super helpful for thickening vocal.

Was about to suggest nudging the duplicate track to achieve similar results of vocal doubling, buuut you covered it so good job. ;)

Thanks!

I noticed that this works best by covering up small perfections in the voice rather than making it sound bigger. It just sounds rather smoother to me when copy pasted/doubled.

I use this technique for vocals when singing (I record with GarageBand). However, I just simply grab on the of the identical tracks and physically move them, but not nearly as far as you have demonstrated here. It allows for a stereo sound with separation that still sounds like one voice.

Here is a good article that talks about The Haas Effect, which is what is happening here. For that widening effect, you usually shoot for between 10ms and 40ms. Less than 10ms will actually make things LESS wide.Up to a certain point, the more delay you add will further enhance directionality. However, once you’ve surpassed say, 10 ms or so, your two tracks will sound wider rather than more or less intense in one channel. producelikeapro.com/blog/haas-effect/

Hello. Great job, i take from you many advices that helps me many times. I want to ask you and something else. If we have a backing track and we want to singing over it, how to mix the vocals to much perfect with the music? Thank you very much.
@HomebrewAudioRecording2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Well, if you have music already mixed as a backing-track, you can put that onto track 1. Then insert another track under, like I did in the video above, and record your lead vocal onto that track. If you have additional vocals - harmonies, and such, they can each go on their own tracks as well. then you just need to use the volume control on the track control area on the left to adjust low loud the vocal is compared to the music, which is "mixing." You adjust things to get the blend of music and vocals just right. Hope that helps.

Excellent video as always. I would, however, caution against using this technique. The effect is good for short snippets but after just a little while, the ear can start distinguishing and one can hear it's the same vocal. There's also some really bad artefacts that can result, such as phasing and phase cancellation.

Thanks! Yes, this is one reason I focused on a short script for an ad. And really, the point was to offer an alternative to the much preferred way of actually recording it twice. I'll add that emphasis to the description. Thanks again.
