Magic mate, I'm refurbishing a very rare South African 1976 Beetle 1600S, only 3000 ever built, with curved windscreen.

Just watching you Jack the car up, you need a "Quick Jack" or similar. Great things especially for lower cars. It even works on a really low AW-11 MR2 race car. Also nice and stable when up. Keep up the good work, it's nice to see someone progressing well with their projects!

Hurrah! John looks lovely, if a little sit up and beg. Best to do a couple of hundred kms and see how the front looks then. When I was at uni I had a ratty old Skoda 130 Rapide coupe, which was rear engined. I had heat soak problems with restarting which I solved by having the heater running all the time. Good excuse to have all the windows down in the summer! I paid £300 for it and got 15,000 miles out of it with the only maintenance costs being a tyre and some exhaust sealant. Those were the days!

Lol, “I want it lower, not higher”! That had me rolling. You need some drop spindles to lower it 2.5” then it will sit right with the rear.

Good work as usual. I do wonder if there is a small leak somewhere in the carb other than the float that is allowing the fuel from the bowl to slowly leak into the intake. That would be independent of if the float is working or not. I think you're right about it being flooded while trying to hot start. It sounds like it's too rich rather than too lean in the hot starts you have shown in pervious videos. Setting the float height is a fairly normal thing to need to do to a carby, a lot of dirt bike riders adjust float heights to make sure the bike doesn't starve on long hill climbs

Love the car and congratulations on its “finishing it”. I have to be honest, working so close to the freshly painted car made me cringe a bit. I would have smacked the paint with the shocks once or twice. Tell Mrs. Jeff she’s not the last person to join instagram. I’m not on it yet. Good luck guys.

jeff dont forget to peen the large bolt that holds the trailing arm after torquing it to 87 ft lbs. They have been known to work their way out on the road. as to the carb apparently you can use a pict 30 31 carb float as they are the same size as a 34 pict if you are trying to source a used vw float. once you get the hard start issue resolved and looking at tuning consider if you have ethanol in your gas when jetting, do they have ethanol in Australia normally you would increase the jet size. Puttiing smaller tires on the front is a cailfornia loook thing and the stance may look off if the shocks are sitting higher with smaller wheels as that would only accentuate the gap from the top of the tire to the fender agian just opinions take them how you may. . good luck Andrew Topline VW sells strut inserts for lowered front ends the note on their std length gas struts that the front end rises on install

I have had hot start issues from fuel evaporation from the engine heat my old falcons used a baculite insulator on the carb which often gets discarded and can cause hot start issues there is also the trick where you make a heat shield and any insulate any fuel line that runs on or near the engine and as some previous comments have said may also just be cheap Chinese carby.

I commented it before, but I would really make sure the float level is OK and matches the carb manufacturer spec. And having after market AF meter for jetting would be bad idea either. I've got carbed motorcycle with twin carbs and the float levels (and that they match) are super critical item to check especially when rebuilding the carbs (say every 2 years). Too low and the carb can run rich and even hydrolock if the needle leaks when not running. Too high and might cause fuel starvation/lean condition. Had problem problem with the lean condition with one cylinder and changing the jetting didn't seem to matter. After I corrected the float level, the jetting started having effect and got the fueling sorted.

Has the same issue with my 1970 Fiat 500. Not starting on a warm engine. Replaced every part in the carb, no improvement. Replaced the carb with a refurbed one, no more problems. Till this day I still do not know what it caused. It still bothers me to this day 15 years later.

To cut the chase a bit, do you have any way to borrow another known-good carb and try it out, just to quickly isolate if that is where the problem resides? Maybe a VW Bug club member could lend you one or something similar?

VW looks good. I had a Super Beetle. One of the problems I had was the fuel cut off valve. It would creep on the shaft to the coil that opened on starting and running. This would cause poor running and hard start up. I would unscrew it and tap the spool end which would slide it back on the electromagnetic coil that opens it on startup. Finally replaced it and it stopped the problems.Anyway it could be this or the valve is just bad. Just another idea to try.
