This type of staircase, known as 'alternating tread stairs,' is actually called the 'Santos Dumont Staircase' because it was invented by the Brazilian aviation pioneer Alberto Santos Dumont in 1918. Fun fact: Santos Dumont is not only the creator of this unique staircase design, but he is also recognized as the true inventor of the airplane, achieving the first public, self-powered flight in 1906 with his 14-Bis. Additionally, he inspired the popularization of the wristwatch when he asked his friend Louis Cartier to create a practical timepiece to use during his flights!
