Canada needs laws to go after home inspectors who are inept or willfully blind. Someone could have been seriously hurt falling off that deck.

One of the episodes does cover that scenario. I can't remember the title, but if memory serves at least two people were very seriously hurt. In the past, Mike personally fell of such a deck do to it's negligent construction. Unfortunately here in the U.S. this is also an ongoing problem that nobody "in charge" pays any serious attention to until some poor homeowner or workman gets Killed.

There's no actual qualification for a home inspector, you could literally take a course with zero knowledge of construction and you are a licensed home inspector. Gonna be hard to establish what's inept unless it's really serious.

I would also go as far as investing in actual experts to inspect the home if the inspector has no credentials in the following areas: Electric, plumbing and heating/cooling, masonry, roofing and construction. This is especially true if the home was renovated. My hubby's tv wouldn't work in our finished basement. I noticed the fuse switch was off so I flipped it on. Still no power to the tv. I called an electrician who traced the line to another outlet behind the bar that had soot and was slightly melted. It had shorted out. The electrician found that the electric wasn't done correctly. Probably done by a handyman or contractor...not an electrician.

There needs to be a law in place that prevents sellers and realtors to use their own inspector. They have to pull from a state licensed pool blindly. Buyers can hire their own. This protects inspectors being blacklisted by realtors and forces an industry standard.

@@Jeff-xy7fv In Ontario Canada unfortunately anyone can be a home inspector. There is NO governing body that licenses home inspection companies in Ontario!! Therefore anyone can register themselves as a home inspector whether they are qualified or not. This includes ALL registered recommended well known companies out there!!! Yes there are competent educated experienced people that can do the job correctly. But no governing body licenses them in order to be a home inspection company. Not like a doctor or dentist practice. Just because you are registered and advertised as the hamburg king doesn't mean you're the king of hamburgers!! Also keep note folks that a home inspector recommended by the realtor I am strongly against as most of the time they are working for the realtor to get the sale. If you end up buying a money pit because the inspection was amazing; good luck suing them and good luck to you !!

Just book reading and passing a test and they are authorized to do inspections. Experience in construction, (not just a cleanup laborer), should be a requirement for becoming an inspector.

As an old commercial Carpenter,I like the speed square being used as a spacer. I did side jobs on weekends so I have installed some decks. We always used 12p nails as spacers, which worked, but they got lost and had to be picked up. Commercial Workers [high rise, industrial sites, etc] usually self censor each others' work by riding the ones who made "mistakes". The problem with residential workers is that a house is built "piecemeal" with crews doing just what they are paid to do,thus the door problem. The carpenter who installed it got paid per door and wasn't supplied caulking, etc to do it correctly. Usually, the general Contractor has himself and a Flunky,so has little control of the job.

Helped him on holidays and weekends untill my late teens then decided to go into the trade when I was 23. I don't expect home inspectors to notice everything I do but most of them are absolutely clueless when it comes to plumbing. Do yourselves a favor and hire a competent service plumber to do an inspection on whatever property you're considering buying. It really could save you thousands and thousands of dollars.

The winding stairway to the basement doesn't meet code in the USA due to narrow tread width on the inside of the turn. 6" minimum at the narrowest and 10" minimum at a point measured out 12" from the inside of the turn. That's considered the walk line. Plus a whole bunch of other specs. I've been building for 50 years. It's a wonderment what you find on remodel jobs. It doesn't matter if they are new or real old. It's usually a shit show. The gas meter most likely was a 5"-7" pressure rating. In the USA we also have been using meters with a 2 LB PSI rating so you don't need the bigger pipe sizes. Just need a regulator at the appliance to reduce to the 5"-7" rating before the furnace. The paver patio we use fine granite for grading instead of the sand. Ant's move the sand but don't bother the granite fines. Then sweep with a really fine granite for the cracks.

Who was the home inspector working for? The seller, not the buyer. GET YOUR OWN INSPECTOR! Do your due diligence and shop around to get one that knows what he is doing and knows who he is working for (you).

Threshold is designed the shed water 1 way. And door should open inside on this door.@@yeeaahhzz

Seals should be on interior, you can order door for opening in or out but seals need to be inside so water can't run inside. That door to be correct would open outward.

This must be an old video, that's one of Mike's former employees with him. I thought he left years ago, did he return with Mike?

Cant comment on Canada, but i believe in the US a contractor only owes a duty to the person who hires him. A third party has no right to rely upon the work in the absence of an assignable warranty.

Why would a buyer rely on a home inspection commissioned by the seller?😊

Nope...this is a time where I don't agree w MH....keep the upper deck large cuz the kit is right there...build a pergola over it for shade & do the grade level deck w stone or concrete. And when it comes to decks, I use ice & water shield EVERYWHERE

You should have had your own inspection done. Why on earth would you accept an inspection done by someone you don't know and you're not the one who hired them to do it? Would you really expect an inspection done by someone the homeowner pays to tell you anything is wrong? Inspectors that you hire will check things the way you're saying you thought they would. You didn't hire the inspector.

I wish Mike Holmes hadn’t kept my money when his magazine suddenly stopped being published and I had prepaid for a year subscription. I asked for a refund by the official ways, I sent a lot of emails to his company, to his website, and many other places. I’m a 72 year old lady, disabled and I could really use that money!

Yeah, that's all fine. But most folks would have to take out a second mortgage to pay for the like $40,000 or so cost of doing all these upgrades.
