Homegoing is so amazing. I’d be very surprised if this didn’t become a classic. I can’t believe Yaa Gyasi was able to develop such amazing characters. Honestly each storyline felt like they could have been novels just on their own. So good. I’m so grateful I read this one!

My only criticism of the book was that I wanted it to be longer, I wish she would have expanded on some of the characters. The last 2 chapters felt particularly rushed to me unfortunately. However, having said that, this book was still so amazing. And heartbreaking to say the least. I've been thinking about it since I finished reading it a few days. I was really moved as it definitely felt so personal to me. My father is Asante and my mom is African American so in a way this was a story that represented my heritage in a very unique way.We especially don't talk about the African connection to the slave trade as much, and it was brutally honest in its confrontation of it. I also learned some new things. I knew that Fante people had a British connection, because so many of them have the surnames, but I didn't really know the history behind that. I can't wait to see what this author does in the future.

Totally agree. This book could've had another 100 pages and I probably would've loved it even more. And thank you for sharing that information. I didn't even touch on that in the review but another great point highlighted in the book

I know this comment is old but I just finished reading. I was so fascinated by this book but I also felt like the ending was rushed. I felt a little cheated with the ending because the rest of the stories before that were so tragic but believable. I had a hard time believing that the descendants ended up meeting & connecting the way that they did & traveling back to Ghana. Other than that I really loved the stories.

@@FeelingFitFabFun Yes Marjorie and Marcus' stories should have been longer and I'd have liked to know what happened to Esi's black stone

I read the book yesterday after watching 2 min of your review video and then came back watched d whole vid today. My favorite thing about the book is that even though its broken down into different povs we are provided with closure after the end of each. It doesnt leave us wanting for more info- there is a proper finality to the chapter endings. The book is only like 300 pages but since it follows the story of 7 generations it feels like a huge saga that feels longer than it actually is. I loved learning about the history and the culture of ghana which i otherwise wouldn't have known if it werent for this book.

I am just hoping this lives up to the hype for everyone else. I always get so nervous that other people will be disappointed when I rave about a book haha

What I appreciate about you is that you don't give out 5 stars very often, so when you do, I can trust that if I spend my money, I will like( a lot) or love it. I felt that way about Signal to Noise and Honor. This is not the type of book that I would initially go for, but now I think I'll give it a try. I really was skeptical of Signal, because I wasn't sure of the premise, but I ended up seriously loving it. I checked it out at the library and upon finishing, bought my own copy. Thanks, Rincey.

Just picked a copy up, so I'm a tad bit late to the party, but my level of excitement is definitely not lacking. Just curious, and speaking of books changing perspectives, have you read a book called The Wandering Falcon by Jamil Ahmad? The stories within are roughly connected, and although it's not an extremely carefully shaped novel, I still recommend it pretty frequently to to it being a very quick read, with engaging qualities for the head and heart.

I'm super intrigued by this book, I like family histories over the course of several generations - but they're usually at least 600 pages. This is just over 300? I guess I'm sceptical of how it all fits in one (relatively) small book
@rinceyreads8 жыл бұрын
Yeah I had similar feelings. It isn't like a deep dive into their history but more like an overview of the family through various generations
