What be used to wipe your bum before maize was introduced to Europe? Corn (Zea mays) is an American crop, so peasants in Europe must have used something else to wipe their butts before corn was introduced. They likely used coarse leaves, sticks, pine cones, or pot shards.

I know the Romans used a sponge on a stick and water to wash. Not sure about the other cultures and times.
