I wouldn’t go as far as to say Homelander despises Butcher. It’s Butcher who despises Homelander, but despite having several opportunities to kill him, Homelander has never taken that opportunity with Butcher. In a weird and severely screwed up way, he’s the closest thing to a friend Homelander has, because he’s brutally honest with him and doesn’t hide his contempt for him, which he really respects. Butcher is one of the few people who’s ever been ‘real’ around Homelander.

@@jamaljames9331 yea, I think it's a mix of "finding him fun" and also measuring himself/his-worth with Butcher as contrast, he makes for a good "villain" in Homelander's story, and Homelander doesn't feel threatened by him so he's just being as irresponsible as he always is and letting things play out. IF he ever is board of Butcher or has a bad mood, he can intend to just kill him, but he's very fickle and every time he intends to kill he something is there to stop him which just makes him form a bigger bond with him over their relationship as "superior" and "inferior".(Homelander's problems are more about validation and self-identity, and he sucks at assessing threats/situations, so the truth about him "despising" Butch or "respecting" him is somewhere in the middle with the caviat that Homelander himself is very unstable/emotionally-undecisive and probably doesn't even know the answer himself. maybe in this next season or whichever is the last season Homelander will reach some epiphany and put to words/set-in-stone whatever his feelings for Butcher are...in a crude/strange twisted joke he might equate him as a father figure or a brother, it certainly would add a fittingly strange layer to the finale if Homelander has a twisted sense of love for Butcher or even has a strange act of mercy/compassion towards Butcher and *then* Homelander is still killed by Butcher's hands, sorta like a stand off moment where they both _can_ kill each other and Homelander is the one to decline and de-escalate the situation for "Butcher/both of their" sakes but Butcher takes the opportunity still, very "grey area" ending worth debating/thinking over, idk if I'm illustrating it right but it sounds very in-tune with 'The Boys'.

It isn't about being "real", it's about fear. The reason everyone else lies and fakes things around him is out of fear and/or awe. It's all he's ever known from the people he is around, his entire life. The doctors, the people he saves, everyone loses it around him. And he can tell, even if they are hiding it. Butcher is borderline suicidal and accepts that he will probably die, horribly, every day. He *feels* different. It's also why he respects his "boss".

Homelander is bored and annoyed with the Seven and the various issues. Butcher steps out of the shadows and insults him. Homelander is thrilled. He quietly respects Butcher because Butcher doesn't fear Homelander and insults him while everyone else is afraid or kisses his rear end. Homelander gets to taunt Butcher and play mind games with him. He's finally got something fun and exciting to do. And then a bunch of road and cars fall on him.

Homelander was actually surprised when hughie stood up to him in season 3. Never mind the fact that his previous gf was murdered by a supe, that hughie wasnt afraid of killing trasnluscent or go against other supes, that he had already threatened to murdered him, that he almost forced starlight to kill him and lets not forget that he has also threatened to kill his current gf several times. I always loved that moment where Hughie stood his ground and looked more furious than scared when Homelander made sexual remarks about Annie. I don't think Homelander had any respect for Hughie until that moment. He still despises him, but I don't think he viewed him as someone with no backbone after that. He knows Hughie has zero chances against him, yet is impressed with his courage.
