Homeless camp sweeps in Reno get contentious

Homeless advocates continue their battle against the City of Reno and how it is managing its population of those experiencing homelessness. An online petition was launched in the past week calling for an end to the sweeps and more communication with city officials.
Sweeps at Commercial Row, near Wells Avenue, in recent weeks have pushed some to other areas of town. One location is at Mills Street and Edison Way, which has seen an increase in people the city says are illegally camping and trespassing on private property.
About 30-50 people were forced to move from the area today after being given notices last week that the area was going to be cleaned this week.
But that effort prompted a new tent camp -- one set up today across from City Hall with protestors demanding an end to the sweeps. The protesters said they would not move until the sweeps stop.

Thank you for being so compassionate. It is much too cold to be outside in Reno during the winter. Thank you giving them the option to get in from outside and out of the cold. Please help them also to get little Mr. Buddy heaters with enough propane in a large community wide propane tank that are safe to give them warmth in the little houses. You people are very precious to care. Thank you.

Why fight for this country I don't understand why and all they do is turn their back against them and it's not going to get any better

This guy is as heartless and souless as it is possible to get. He was seriously normalizing the removal of human beings from their makeshift dwellings like he was overseeing removal of those pesky pits from cocktail olives. He may have been totally right but he was as tone deaf as it is possible to get. I think sweeps must happen because homeless encampments are making our streets unsafe, unhealthy and impassible. These people must be told to move along but it should be done with some degree of compassion this guy lacks. He's housed just does not care about those unhoused among us!

I implore the government of the worlds to only build low and middle income housing so that the low-end workers and the poor can afford a place to live

Unless they’re talking about building just low end housing all over the cities instead of in one spot there’s no solution

Build infrastructure for a booming population what do you mean you didn’t anticipate single women living there. Single women are on the streets homeless all the time so clearly you need to have those facilities for them. These campuses need to be massive.

Perhaps homeless advocates could show some compassion for the disabled seniors, many on hospice, who live at the LIHTC complex at Sutro & Kuenzli on the riverwalk. I lost my compassion when both a neighbor (now deceased) and I began suffering seizures due to the sonic booms caused by 24/7 whip cracking.

How can you talk about compassion for the homeless when the homeless don’t have any compassion for the people that work . And the homeless people have an expectation of entitlement that they are to have anything they want with out working. I see it everyday from the homeless people that ride the bus system here in the Reno, Sparks area. If you want compassion from people like the city of Reno then the majority of homeless people need to do the same

You must be talking about the degenerate homeless, alcoholics, druggy’s etc because you’re painting all homeless with the same brush!

I don't care if it's 'private land', if it's vacant, it should be made available. Everyone deserves a place to lay their head at night, even if it's outdoors. And all these home and business owners complaining about 'the blight', can just stfu until something better is provided by the city. And NOT a giant freaking shelter that warehouses people like livestock.

The reason is because Portland was the city of Roses and now it’s a garbage dump. That city allowed camping everywhere and it turned the city poop. Reno should not let this happen
