This brought me to tears. Working with 1500 homeless daily for almost a decade, this depicts so well their kindness and appreciation. They gave what they had, almost nothing, because she treated them with kindness and respect, which every person deserves, regardless of situation in life. Rest in peace officer.

This is the best story I've heard from CBS in a long long time. Homeless people realize that at any given second your life can be turned upside down, like say a designation of stage 4 colon cancer! And how worthless things in this great country really after! I've lived with the homeless street people in Kingman az after my car broke down there. Not very many were drug addicts but needed mental help. You guessed it, me being a senior citizen and living out of my car with colon cancer, was brutal. You wait and wait for help to come but it never does. I took what did stamps I had and bought man of these people singing to eat. Mostly men but not all. The homeless will be the first to stand up for you and give you the short off their back. Urge your local dumbazz in government to for something for all these people because this country is better than that!

I agree. Yet many do want to live off the streets. Maybe for a week, a month they agree to be placed in housing,, but many want to return and live homeless...either the rules were too strict,, or the work of staying off the street was too hard, or they are full of defensiveness for the years of abuse on the streets,, and trust no one, or they want to get back to their addictions,, or the program has too narrow ruled for some homeless people to fit in to etc etc etc. Then there are many who lost everything to no fault of their own, and had worked all their lives. How can we combat homelessness? How do we stop it? I have a few suggestions, but it must be a willingness from All the homeless to participate, as Well as All the so called non homeless communities. It Must be a common goal. It must be All of us in the USA, including the homeless, to be kind, respectful, loving and forgiving. It must not include judgement. So I hear and see the many on the streets who would rather die on the streets, than give up their addictions. With addictions comes loss of everything, dignity, basic care of one self, theft and lying and cheating to feed the addiction, etc etc. These are Real issues re homelessness. We can stop it, if the homeless, All Of Them, and the non homeless come together and give individually and as a country to the elimination of untold suffering, crime and slow agonizing death of people on the street in their bodies, souls and hearts. Our example is this woman police officer.

That is not a rare thing, the gifting of cash to the bereaved, though among homeless people it surely must be rare. That gift shows exemplary cultural values, and true respect. In a hospital where I worked, a doctor lost a close family member. The aides, who are certainly paid very little compared to a doctor, passed around a card that everybody signed, and they collected cash that was put with the card ... because by custom and tradition, the cash meant respect, condolences, flowers, and heartfelt sympathy. Because in a healthcare setting, which must be staffed 24/7, and because the sympathy was based on a work relationship, they would not be attending the funeral. The money stood for their sympathy and emotions.

Jesus noticed pure hearts and reminded us of the value of their efforts: “Then he saw a needy widow drop in two small coins of very little value, and he said: “Truly I say to you that this poor widow put in more than they all did. For all of these put in gifts out of their surplus, but she, out of her want, put in all the means of living she had.” Luke 21:2-4 As her lieutenant said, those $8 were like 8 million😭❤️”That is as genuine as you’re gonna get”

I went to McDonald’s one night with my son. We waited in the drive-thru for at least 20 minutes. The line was so long. Once we gave our orders and was told the total, I reached for my wallet. There was no wallet. I was stuck, can’t go backward or forward. This homeless guy came up to my window and asked for $1.00 to buy something to eat. I told him I wish I could help but I forgot my wallet at home. He reached into his front shirt pocket and offered me $5 to pay for my food. I told him that’s okay. We didn’t live far. I’ll just swing back and pick up food. I told him not to go anywhere cause I’ll come back and he can join me and my son for dinner inside the restaurant. We had no plans to sit and eat. But I wanted to do something nice for him because he didn’t hesitate to do something nice for me and my son. We did return to the restaurant and found him waiting outside. We all sat and had a long lovely dinner.

I agree with you, but money needs to go into the right hands. I remember a talk given by a director in charge of a homeless teen charity in which he stated for people to donate directly to a homeless organization vs. directly handing over money to someone holding out their hat. He said you don't know if they are taking that money to go buy liquor somewhere. Also one time, while at a McDonald's restaurant, a guy claiming to be homeless, came up to me asking for money. He was flashing a huge roll of bills in his hand. I told him that he had more money than I did. Another time, when on a shopping mall side road, I saw a woman get out of an expensive looking car in front of me and set up a chair and sign in order to ask for donations. She looked back and smiled at me as her car stopped and dropped her off in front of me. I knew that she was doing this every day because I worked inside the mall at the movie theater. These are examples of people taking advantage of the system.
