Homeless Man Is Sober and Looking for a Job in Columbia, SC

Who gets their life back together in 30 days? NO ONE! Morris lives in a mission that has 30 days in and 14 days out policy. What that means is a homeless person can stay in the shelter for 30 days, but when 30 days are up, they have to leave and cannot come back for 14 days. As crazy as this policy is, it's very common even in cities with freezing weather.
Morris is homeless in Columbia, SC. He is sober and looking for work. Morris is trying to make it, but it seems as the world is against him. The mission also does not allow homeless people to leave stuff in the shelter during the day, so when people go on a job interview, they have to take all their belongings with them. A clear sign to an employer that the person is homeless.
I just met Morris but I have a feeling he's going to make it. Sadly, there are more people entering into homelessness than ever before. We all must work together to help our homeless neighbors.
Your voice can help end homelessness. If we do not fix the affordable housing crisis, homelessness will continue to get worse. Click here invisiblepeople... to tweet, email, call, or Facebook your federal and state legislators to tell them ending homelessness and creating more affordable housing is a priority to you.
Special thanks to Mayors and CEOs for US Housing Investment housinginvestm...

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as KZbin, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

I know that probably sounds really harsh but I have tryed to help a few who weren’t satisfied with the few dollars I gave them one man actually got mad because I had only change and one lady after I gave her a couple dollars actually flipped off someone who wouldn’t give her anything! But than there has been so many who are so greatful so don’t turn your backs to these poor souls they’re is many more good ones than their is the 2 I encountered!

I try and stop and have a talk with people. Share our names, just be human to human. I may or may not have money to offer. I try to say would they mind if I gave them some money, try to do it with respect and dignity for them. I've been lucky I've not had abusive or difficult reactions. With homelessness often being connected with mental health problems it's not surprising though. If being hassled by police, etc, and not being supported by society I think I'd be very narky some days and feel very outside of non-homeless people.

I just don't understand why abandoned houses and other buildings can't be repurposed and used for homeless people. I'm sure that the homeless would even help refurbish/clean up these places. Learn some skills and be a part of the process. But I guess it's all about liability and red tape... I wish this man good luck and to keep positive

Don't get me wrong I do like your videos but if I could make one suggestion I would do a little bit of research on every city you go to before you go, that way when you do an interview with a homeless person you can give them a printout of all resources including names phone numbers and addresses of people that are willing to help them so that way maybe they won't feel so abandon.

From where you stand, there may be plenty of work. But few jobs if you live on the streets. No sleep. Cops harassing you. No mailing address. No resume. Little food. No clean clothes. Getting ripped off by other homeless people. Hard to shower. Even those with higher education find getting gainful employment difficult. I have a BS & a paralegal degree & haven't been able to find work. At age 58, diagnosed with mental illness. Very hard to find decen mental & physical health physicians with no insurance or with Medicaid.

You are doing a good thing, I swear to God you are. I am facing eviction and have nowhere to turn. My dad let me down for the umpteenth time so I am now stuck. I live in Las Vegas and am suffering with depression amongst other things. You inspire me to reach out, try to get on the news here or something. They can throw up a casino in 3 months, which serves to some peoples devastation and misery, yet there’s only one to three homeless shelters that are all either overfilled or you have to be on a waiting list. These videos give me hope, nonetheless. They are very humbling, God has something in store for each and every one of these people, no mans pain is in vain and I believe that to my core!!! I know I don’t have much, but whenever God places on my heart to be of some help to someone I will! This is heartbreaking. What’s going on America? “Our” president needs to address affordable housing, really, like this is ridiculous

I grew up in Columbia. My sons and I were homeless off and on while living there. You are an outcast to people. If you use the shelter as an address on applications, you are never going to be able to obtain work, because they know It's the shelter. Everybody knows everyone and it doesn't take long before the labels come. It was not until I left Columbia and moved 45 minutes away, that I found success. I now make more than 45000 a year with no government assistance. He needs to leave there fast!

I've heard enough decent things or so little bad, that I think its worth a shot. if I dont get a place though, I have cities close I can go at least. I just know I cant stay in the NW.. its so bad out here in the Portland area, so is the racism. Its also expensive and a BAD homeless problem, snobs all over too. I had to live at home to afford it.. even free, I didnt like it so I feel I dont got a damn thing to lose to see Columbia if its the right place to move and stuff. Thoughts?

That let people know he was serious about wanting work and not just looking for spare change. It worked the man got tons of job offers! I’m not saying this man isn’t being authentic it’s just an idea! I was getting ready to do that myself I was recently on the job hunt and it took a month to find one paying well enough to cover my bills and thats with a car searching every day!

I understand people are used to looking for work in the area where they live. A lot of these able-bodied homeless people who want to work, need to look in areas where there are lots of jobs. Right now in the Midwest, jobs are plentiful. Maybe there is someway they could get a bus ticket, to areas where people are readily hiring. That’s an idea that I have always had. Bringing able-bodied people, who are not addicts in anyway, to an area where they can get a job at start a life. A program that would help them get to where they need, and temporary housing until they get paid. It doesn’t seem like that would be that hard of a thing to do with all the other programs that are out there.

Omaha is good, but its also too cold. I had a harder time securing an apartment, so I'm off to Columbia to look in a hotel until I do..

South Carolina is pathetic when it comes to physically or mentally helping people. I live in SC. Other states I have lived in help people down on life.

I will tell u this though, those states that "help" often are expensive. I find Oregon, a liberal state to have shit services too.

Thats actually false, I live in Las Vegas we have plenty of undocumented 'homeless', What you often dont see are people who profit off them by charging $200/mo for a place to live which they share with 30 others in a 1br unit.

There is a big state prison in Columbia SC maybe he can get a job there , as a maintenance man, etc., or on the darker side; get free room and board (if he commits a crime)edit: this is a serious comment folks, I am not trying to be facetious ‼️😎🇺🇸
