Before you watch this, remember what you were like when you were young. Did you have a different worldview? Did you think you were indestructible? Did you think you knew everything? I did. When you listen to Noah, try to remember the innocence of youth, and try to remember Noah is a hurting young adult suffering through the trauma of homelessness.
Noah is 21. He is homeless in Westchester Park near Los Angeles International Airport. Noah is a good kid. Moments before this interview, Noah gave a homeless woman a cellphone.
The reason Noah is on the streets is that his parents are using drugs. At the time of this interview, Noah's parents were in housing, but they too spent some time on the streets. Noah told me he visits them, but he cannot stay long.
Social and economic deprivation during childhood and adolescence can have a lasting effect on individuals, making it difficult for children who grow up in low-income and dysfunctional families to escape poverty when they become adults. Because the negative effects of deprivation on human development tend to cumulate, individuals with greater exposure to poverty during childhood are likely to have more difficulty escaping poverty as adults.
In other words, poverty and homelessness are often generational. Children and young adults model their parents. It's a miracle Noah is not using drugs. If we looked deeper, there is a good chance that his parent's parents suffered from addiction and lived in poverty.
You'll hear Noah share a few times in this interview that he believes the solution to homelessness is people need more love. He's spot on. When you look behind the curtain into people's lives and how they were raised, you'll often find layers of some kind of abuse and trauma. For homeless youth like Noah, there is a very real sense of urgency to get them off the streets, however, most resources go to help vulnerable homeless adults. As youth homelessness continues to grow, services that target young adults need more support. With just a little love, Noah can get out of homelessness, but the longer he lives in a park, the more at risk he becomes.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

I worry that this fella is gonna get hurt, because he has a kind and trusting heart. I also sense that he may have been affected in the mother's womb if she was doing drug's while pregnant. He seems smart, but he also seems to have the mentality of maybe a 15 year old. I have worked in the mental health field, and I just sense something a bit off, but not in a bad way. I know there are male predators that would prey on this young man. Please update us on Noah. New to your channel Mark, and I think you do a lot for the homeless. I am 50, and was hurt on the job a few year's back, went through bankruptcy, and was also diagnosed with MS , and some other serious stuff. I don't have much money, but I carry some cash while I go out and help the homeless. I have a friend who I let stay with me for free because she is disabled in a hospital bed, and I struggle to help her and myself. She pays for her own food, but I have to shop for her, and sometimes it is really hard to do because I am disabled and in a lot of pain. When I got hurt at work, I bought a house on a quarter acre with a well and septic. The place was repossessed, and I had to use the rest of my settlement money that wasn't much to put a roof on, and a lot of other stuff. I am thankful to God for watching over me, or I would not have been able to afford rent where I live, but luckily I only have to pay taxes which keep going up. This plandemic is creating more homeless people, and look around the world, they want this to happen. I do though urge people to carry a little cash, because a homeless man I help said that people are using card's instead of cash because of the rona. God bless, and much love.

I was homeless because my parents were substance users as well. I left home in 1996 when I was 16 and never went back, it wasn't easy... I struggled for a lot of years but it was better than being at home! Now thanks to youth programs, counselling and self-compassion I am college educated, have a full time job and a salary, and a safe home. Almost every night I lay in bed and think about how grateful I am for what I have... people take so much for granted in this world, having a safe bed and food to eat is a luxury for many. I'm headed back to school in September to study for a masters in social work.

I ran away at 15 and 17 from my abusive mother n then moved back into family home n became homeless at 21 the homeless unit told me he wanted me to live on the streets my guidance teacher at 15 told me she also hoped I did not get a job n slept on the streets kids at school would make fun of me and claim I slept in a cupboard box when I became homeless I was lucky to not had to sleep on the streets been thru hostels friends n finally supported acccomodstion but the supported accommodation threatened and blackmailed me to report my abuse or they will put me on the street without support. They had threatened it with the -olive right there nodding. Now I have my home even tho I reported it n were blamed n not believed n interrogated for 3 months and honestly I feel safe and fre and luxury just to have a bed roof and food. I see pp, my age with mortgages cars and kids and husbands. I’m way behind still though. I always feel alone in the not getting saved from abuse until I had to leave it in adulthood which was not easy I was bullied at workplaces so it was hard to become independent n get away...l but I know too many toppling who were supported social care in childhood my baby sister was one. Social care left me in abuse when I was a child. I have less than what she gets now in adulthood through social care.

Social work IS your calling, no doubt. Hardships are life's lessons, teaching us who we are, and what we're made of. Learning compassion for others, as well as ourselves, and how to hurdle struggles, are all character building.. Being 'Homeless' for whatever the reasons, is a traumatizing experience.. You should be extremely proud of yourself, for having the will-power to endure, and the strength to overcome everything life tried to knock you down with. You're a perfect example of Strength and Victory.. Thank You, so very much, for sharing your story, a story of Strength, Courage, Dignity, and Hope.. I became Homeless January of this year. It's such a scarey world living in the Unfamiliar, the Unknown.. I've never felt this level of fear before. But, after reading your comment, you help give me a better since of direction on which way to go, and a Hope that I will get through this tough stage of my life.. Not everyone Homeless are trying to take advantage of people who do extend a helping hand.. We need to remember that, because it's so easy to fall to judgement.. Sometimes, what might look like an, 'I'm being used by this person, scenerio', is actually a, 'This person is overwhelmed and scared shitless, what to do?' God Bless The Hands That Help Others..God Bless Those That Need That Help.. And again, Thank You,, sharing your story has impacted, and encouraged Many, i'm positive.. INSPIRATIONAL!! ♡

There is so much of this in homelessness people don't even care to know. They use gossip and generalizations and stigmas to speak on homelessness and who ends up like this. They don't see people like him, and when they learn people like him end up homeless too, the rationalizations begin of how he needs to pick himself up by his bootstraps. Many homeless kids see no hope because their intelligence and heart feels trapped in a society with no way out of this life. Many kids get murdered, killed or get on drugs after the hardness of life gets to be too much. This shit is scary and needs to end. It feels like our government sacrifices people.

I took in a homeless young fellow when he was 19. We tired really hard to help him, get him in programs and a job. He trashed his room like it was the streets(wraps and food all over the floor). Said we lived a boring life and left and he ended up leaving and going back in the streets when his friend got out of jail. He ended up getting into a lot of trouble even with us paying his rent and buying him food. He eventually lost all communication with us after he got locked up. You can’t help anyone unless they want to be helped and are ready to receive it.

This makes me realize how strong of work ethics some of our immigrants have. I know of a man that literally walked into the states with only the cloths on his back and sat outside of hardware stores and always had work.....hard work. He now has a home and three kids and also supports his family back in his home country that he left and will never see again. Being that he is mostly undocumented it shows that if you are willing to work hard and are healthy, you can find work. Might be a good Avenue for Noah as he is younger and seems to be healthy, if not healthy he needs help!! That includes mental health.

Very good point. Clearly hanging in the park (with these 'close friends') looking for handouts is more fun then putting in the effort to find a job. Wants more done for the homeless.. but what are these homeless offering in return? Statistically, not many become productive members of society. He's got to do a little more then get free Obama phones and hand them out to make ppl want to get involved. I am not being unkind because, while I feel for this young man, I don't feel we are all obligated to take care of him and his drug addled parents. 😑

My name is also Noah. Im 24, and I live in Nebraska. I was adopted at the age of 2 because my parents were addicts. I really am grateful for the life ive been given and i always wonder what would have happened if I hadn't been adopted. I have had a sour attitude towards homeless people because my birthparents would panhandle for drugs and alcohol, even using my older sister for sympathy once. I have never even smoked a cigarette because I dont want to get anywhere near that lifestyle. I know not everyone's goal is substances like my parents and Im trying to have a more loving outlook towards people. Just even seeing the title shocked me and made me think about the things I have. Ive watched your videos for a while and this one really hit home. Thank you for everything you do. I am going to find some way that I can contribute.

This is hard. I helped a homeless guy once by buying him food (his sign said hungry) and he told me he wanted money, not food. Another guy told me a long story about being separated from his children and I offered him a ride to get food. After getting to the store and listening to him for close to 30 minutes, he said, "I'll be honest. I don't want food, I want money for alcohol." I have been burned by homeless many times and my heart has hardened. I would like to help people like this guy, not those who get mad at me for not giving them money and possibly enabling an addiction. I can't tell the difference.
