Homeless Man Recycles to Survive Instead of Doing Crimes

Chris is homeless in Hawthorne, a city in southwestern Los Angeles County, California. At the start of this interview, Chris states that he recycles to survive instead of committing crimes.
Some of you may have trouble understanding the significance of what Chris said. People have to eat. Humans have basic needs, and if the person cannot get a job or if they are unemployable, let's say because of a prison record, their choices are to steal or sell drugs, which will send them back to prison, and as a taxpayer, we pay considerable taxes to lock criminals up.
Chris spent some time in prison. Now, because he cannot find employment, he lives outside in a tent. Chris is a good guy. He tries to help other homeless people all he can. Chris even teaches the ins and outs of recycling.
Chris has lived at the current homeless encampment for six months. He says that's a long time. Police make them move after people complain about seeing the trash. What the public needs to understand is humans make trash.
All of us, without exception, create some waste or garbage. Most of us are used to having trash pickup. Homeless people do not have that luxury. As Chris says, if the city provided a dumpster with even just monthly pickup, the homeless camp would use it.
There is a direct connection between homelessness and incarceration. Many people end up on the streets after being released from prison. There is little support for reentry back into society, and it's nearly impossible for an ex-con to find employment.
Your voice can help end homelessness. If we do not fix the affordable housing crisis, homelessness will continue to get worse. Click here invisiblepeopl... to tweet, email, call, or Facebook your federal and state legislators to tell them ending homelessness and creating more affordable housing is a priority to you.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

@Stay EZ My Friends The wording of Genesis 9 is interesting in that God says the rainbow will be a reminder for Himself to remember His covenant: "When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth" (Genesis 9:14-16). This does not imply that God "needs" reminding; it is simply a way of saying that God will faithfully keep His covenant. He is ever mindful of His promise.

@@leosanchesbr I have tried to answer this question a whole bunch of times this morning, and it's hard to sum up in the comments here. So for now, I'll just say it took a mixture of the two...but I'll grant more to others and the fact that in Canada, I get "free" treatment for mental health issues, than to myself. A lot of it was luck, I think...though I still feel like I am always just a step away from it happening again...I am almost sure of it. I think if I had to do it again, I'd just go full on hermit, like I've always talked about. Just disappear into the woods and never look back.

@Russell Scott I do know Chris, I work with Street Watch LA and am the person who introduced Mark to him. Unfortunately I live in a tiny apartment about 10 blocks from Chris and we really don't have any more room in our place for another person. Also Chris doesn't want to crash in someone's living room, Chris wants the city to leave him alone so he can live his life. Chris has been unhoused for over 7 years now, while I don't fully understand it he has adjusted to life outside. My hope and prayers are that if Chris ever got the love and support from his city his goals might shift from "please stop hurting me" to "I would like help to get housed." But its Chris's life, and he really isn't hurting anyone, he actually helps a ton of unhoused people by teaching them and protecting them. If he wanted to spend the rest of his life living in a tent on the side of the tracks helping folks who ended up next to him I would consider his life a powerful testament to love.

When i was 25 i was such a brat. I hatet my mom for purchasing me an appartement. I did not want nothing to do with it because it was too far away from the people and the drugs( which was her intention OBVIOUSLY). She really did everything she could because she had no time for me when i was a child. She had to work so much. I made her guilty for my addiction again when i was older but now i know that i was really lucky to have a loving caring mommy that she really is. I am clean now for years and adore my little appartement which is all alone mine soon. I just want to tell some parents here that your childs are searching and struggling so much. They cant carry all that shame and guilt all the time , so they have to give it to you or someone else for a little while untill they understand that it is in their shoes to change their lifes. They might need your help even if they seem to hate you therefore at the moment , they will love you much more later and be thankfull after suceeding. Never let your children down please.

Thanks for sharing these stories of homelessness. One thing I gathered is: the less you own, the less you desire. And when you don’t have much, you max it out and makes the best out of it. Most people being interviewed agree that homelessness isn’t the best way of living for anyone. Though not every homeless person is as good as this guy, the majority are. But the competition in big cities nowadays makes it really hard to get housing, and like what Chris said in this video, bad histories do scare people away and most people like to play safe than risky. I hope these videos reach more and more people and society can show more understanding to some of these kind hearted homeless people. Some of them made mistakes in the past, some are not by choice, but as long as they are willing to change their situation and don’t cause harm to other people, they deserve to be treated like a human being and given a chance.

Recycling other people’s crap is how I made my way up. I wasn’t homeless, but I was getting there. I’ve accumulated over $1000 in one of the first few years, and invested the crud out of it (along with working 4 jobs to survive). I still have that $1000 invested and I never forget how my portfolio has grown to tens of thousands compounded, along with other recyclable stuff and money I’ve worked for. It adds up, and kudos to this man.

Very nice interview… I’ve been a big recycler for years, even before it started to be collected in neighborhoods across the US and started to be fashionable!!! That is good that he does that, and as he was saying, gives him a purpose. He seems like a good guy, even though he was in jail for whatever he did… I missed or think that you or he didn’t say where this was that?! Thank you very much.

If I may suggest to those on SSDI or SS...i am disabled myself after getting hurt on the job...and do get SSDI although it's half the average since I became disabled very young...i found myself having to make some hard decisions...and like always my choices may not be the best for anyone else..but can honestly say what worked for me...i found out if one gets SSDI or SS benefits..they can live almost anywhere and still get their benefits..so I moved from the states not wanting to be a burden to my family or homeless or such..and I can easily support a family of 3 for around 800 dollars a month here...i have an upper middle class lifestyle now where as extreme poverty would of been my outcome living in the states..the city I live in now one can rent a 2 bed single bath for 100 dollars a month..my sons private school is 600 a year plus uniform and books..my doc visits are 10 dollars a month and my meds are 60-70 a month...a live in maid is 100 a month plus food and their personal hygiene needs...my house is in a gated community and my mortgage is 211 a month for a 15yr mortgage...a meal at a fast food type is usually round 2 dollars...just something to consider as knowledge is empowering and before I get beat up in the comments...my choices may not be best for you but wanted to empower others looking at a similar situation as myself..and I am in the Philippines as I know that may be the next question...but the Philippines may not be best for you so use your time to consider other places as well...i have considered to do a vlog of my experiences as I have lived here now a solid 5yrs but I have a reserved personality and not very tech savvy....anyways if anyone has any questions my email is motto966@yahoo.com...thanks to any one who will/has read this and I do ask that any comments have a positive tone..take care all..and may everyone find that niche in this life that grants one the security, the well being and community we all need..

I agree with this guy. I dumpster dive and look for cans and bottles as well. I'm not homeless. I receive a disability pension. Doing these things help to pay for what I need because 768 dollars a month is not enough. I got to the hotels here for cans and bottles. Blue bin/recycling night is the best night for getting my bulk of cans and bottles. I also go through regular trash ,black bin night, because so many people don't bother to recycle.

Recommendation: Establish and Maintain your own space, identify 10-20-30 10 Gallon White Paint Buckets, Fill Them with decent soil, fill each pail with, e.g., potatoes, basil, kale, garlic, carrots, onions, etc. Water and harvest when ready. Repeat and save that money from the cans that you are using for food. Build up your food stores, and eat fresh. Then, go on to the next problem and slowly pull yourself out of having no money to have plenty of produce. Later, if possible buy fruit trees. Water them, grow them, then harvest them when they bloom and bear fuit. *Learned this back in the early 90's from my Sociology and Economics Teacher who was a farmer who was from Kansas that came to California. The Rule: Begin creating your own sources of food, money, healthcare, and life slowly begins to get better. Takes time, but what else do you have to do when you are collecting cans. Don't ask me how I know. all the best, mdm. :) Here: You can listen to one of my audiolog self-help guides. I used to work in LA Metro as a workforce development professional. My job was to help folks just like you, pull yourself up and out of poverty. @@Jj-gi2uv Well said. A beautiful analysis of the chronic problems associated with the homeless problem in the U.S. I so appreciate your insights on how to live on less, save more, stop watching so much television, learning to use both your eyes and your hands, etc. Moreover, I can certainly understand and appreciate your viewpoint on the importance of medical care. "You are absolutely right." As I recall now.. I DID have that exact same problem when I began my self-imposed journey on poverty. As I recall, you are right. In 2011, the effects of living in poverty began to affect me. I found myself living in a severely contaminated black mold environment. I was in trouble. I went to the hospitals to try and get help. Nobody would see me. They gave me a bunch of static about, "not taking any new patients, they put me on long waiting lists, and I could not be seen." I ended up having to spent a lot of time educating myself on environmental illnesses. I had to ultimately apply for Medi-Cal to receive any treatment. Well, after about a year, I finally managed to figure out the system. I was eventually treated and I managed to slowly begin making headway and after five years, I got the care I needed and did recover from it all. Unfortunately, the mold was still present in the house. It got into the food supply, turned one of the oranges moldy from the inside. I consumed the orange, and after 6 weeks, I DEMANDED to be taken to the hospital. The doctor's told me: You're lucky you came in when you did. If you had waited much longer, you likely would have "stroked out - and died.." So yes, I do understand the problem from applied experience. It's brutal out there. You begin to realize, that most people only care to a certain point. But, after a time, you begin to internalize, that you are essentially on your own. It's very easy to die one you reach middle age. Your body just isn't as resilient as it once was. As the decades pass, your body often has a very hard time fighting off infections and disease. Your point is well taken. All the best my friend. You take care out there and stay safe, mdm, Fresno, California. ;) Note: *Your comment has inspired me! - I'll will do yet another audio log supplement on "How to get great medical care while living in Poverty." I did. I'm healthy enough once again to talk, write my self-help books, and create these audio logs which are easy to listen to and for many to get some good advice to get the help and methods they need to survive and later thrive out there. Thank God! all the best, mdm, JD Candidate.

The stereotype of people selling scrap to buy drugs needs to be stopped, most people recycle or scrap to pay for GAS and FOOD, or to spend less of their PAYCHECK, since recycling is money earned, it's money saved.

I wish these bakeries, buffets and restaurants that throw out the food at the end of the day would just place it all nicely in a clean tied off garbage bag at the top of the dumpster instead of making it hard for people to get it out. That would really help these people. Having decent clean food to eat means so much in terms of being able to think clearly and find a place to live. Bread that isn't even more than a day old, they won't give it away, but would rather throw it out. I have seen these things and talked to store owners who said they would rather do this than be sued. This country wastes like 75% of the food and there are people who need it all around.

I have a lot of respect for this dude, Not everyone has wisdom or integrity. I can say myself that I'd rather choose to have integrity than make money by crime. I think as human beings WE ALL HAVE CRIMINAL TENDENCIES IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER........IF YOU CLAIM TO NOT HAVE CRIMINAL TENDENCIES than you are lying HOWEVER some of us CHOOSE TO NEVER GIVE IN TO THOSE TENDENCIES AND then it becomes natural after a long time of practicing this integrity that you are highly likely to always do the right thing. Recycling can rather than selling drugs to make money I respect this man for living peaceful even during such trying times. Not everyone is trust worthy not everyone values practicing integrity. Matter of fact there are people who abuse their positions, who are actually incompetent individuals who lie, steal and or cheat all the time and yet no one checks them or somehow what they do is alright to those around the person..........plenty of people when they need money will commit crimes and will sell drugs.........someone should offer this guy a job if you ask me.

So, wish number three is to have purpose. Wish number one, I rolled my eyes when he laughed. Wish number two, I agree. I agree with the wish for purpose, too. It's almost like he expected Mark to have a response to wish number one. I'm glad that the homeless are honest enough to say that, yes, there are some homeless who really are lazy, on drugs, etc., and that they're honest about their own criminal record, if they have one, like this guy. I'm glad about the honesty. But, they're right. It's not EVERY homeless person. EVERY housed person thinks it's EVERY homeless person. Yet, the housed want stereotypes to go away. Well, get rid of your own stereotype about the homeless. It's NOT EVERY homeless person who's like that. Like this guy said, YOUR neighbor could be a mass murderer, and you don't know it. Mark is right that no homeless person shoots up a school. It's NOT every homeless person who's like that. There's a few, but not all. The homeless are people, too. Lets treat all people like people.
