As I was driving home from work, I saw Ray digging through the trash for something to eat. I wanted to help him, but this time I decided to play a game with him instead. I asked him if he wanted to participate in a game and he asked what game. I told him to choose either a green or red piece of paper. He picked the green one and it had "Burger King" written on it. He was confused, but I explained that he could have whatever he wanted to eat from Burger King. His eyes lit up and he said, "Dude, that sounds awesome. I want a hot meal." His favorite was a double whopper with onion rings and a vanilla coke.
As we walked to Burger King, he told me that he had just gotten out of jail and was very hungry. He had even picked up a half-eaten burrito from the trash can. It broke my heart to hear that this man was struggling to survive with so little. While most of us complain about our lives, he was literally trying to make it through with the bare minimum.
At the end of the day, if we have a roof over our heads, food on our table, and friends and family who care for us, we are richer than we think. We often take the simple things in life for granted and forget to appreciate what we have. Ray's story reminded me to be grateful for all that I have and to always help those in need.
