Dan, that makes perfect sense. Awesome idea. I can see how the nature of it being a whatever spring makes it totally adjustable over time or just for your taste. I must say that your ability to design and build based upon common sense, simplicity, and efficiency are impressive. Thanks for replying.

man that's probably the sweetest design I've ever seen in just started a 2x72 belt sander today but I'm thinking about scraping it and using a design like yours because that's the slickest design I've seen so far and I've been looking and doing research for almost 8 months so far

I like your design, very nice. One thing you can do to reduce slop in the tubes is put your set screws (eyebolts) in the corner of the tube. That way you are pushing the inner tube into the opposite corner. Which will eliminate the slop.

Thanks! I bought my belt at a wood shop store for $20. They are called "Grizzly power twist v-belts". Amazon has them but they are expensive. My RPM's are 1380, 2588, 4600, 8625 Google "pulley speed calculator" and you can figure out your speeds based on your motor rpm. Great idea for fixing the vertical post. I used a previous suggestion though. A foot pedal would be nice. My setup would require it to be rated for a 2hp motor, 240 volt 15 amp motor. Not sure I want to dish out the money.

Nice job. I'm going to follow your example. About the sliding tubes, you probably already know this, but the larger tube has an internal weld seam. If you grind a shallow slot on the smaller tube and just flap disc the corners, it will be much tighter and slide easily. Best.

A lot more then expected like all projects I seem to do. I'd say around $450. The step pulleys and idlers really set me back.

@danfuller826511 жыл бұрын
Close, there is a spring under the arm. The square tube that holds the pulley is capped off on the bottom. Just throw a loose spring inside the other square tube (the piece that is welded to the frame) and your done. Hope that makes sense.

Outstanding ingenuity and fabrication! I enjoyed this video and it inspired me. 2 questions: where did you buy the drive belt ? Do you know roughly what RPM difference is between the 3 belt speed Pulleys are? As far as you grinding the vertical post too and it now has play...you can just weld a few beads or dots down the sides of the square tube then file down to tight fit.. They will take up the play. The switch I would change to a foot switch.. find one on amazon as low as $9.00.Thanks !
@danfuller826511 жыл бұрын
Yes both the contact wheel and idler rotate together. Not sure which belt you're talking about so I'll explain both. The motor is on a hinge that allows the weight of the motor to pull tension on the belt. So far I've had no issues with it. As for the sanding belt, tension is adjusted using the idler arm. Underneath the idler arm is a spring I bought from Ace hardware that pushes up on the idler arm thus putting tension on the belt. Sorry, I should have shown that in the video.
@stizan249 жыл бұрын
I'm gathering the materials right now lol. My motor shipped yesterday and I got.my spring 3 days ago. now I need the steel, wheels, pulleys, blocks, belts, and hardware. I also need to run 220v 20amp to.my garage but I need to install a sub panel to do that. fun fun fun. I will be up and running by 4th of july.
@danfuller82659 жыл бұрын
+stizan24 Nice, sounds like your on your way. Lately I've been using a 3000 watt step up transformer so I can run it off of 120v. I've only got one 220v plug in the garage and I need it for other things.
@stizan249 жыл бұрын
+Dan Fuller when my motor came it was wired for 120 so I wired on a power cord and plugged it in and it runs fine. I will see how it runs under load. I don't want to have to do a sub panel if I don't have to. my electrical buddy says I could swap my 15 amp for a 20 if I need to. as long as the motor running isn't pulling more than 18 amps I should be ok.
@danfuller82659 жыл бұрын
Come to think of it I'm running a 20 amp breaker on that 120v line. I haven't tried it on a 15 amp breaker. Hope it works for you.
@stizan249 жыл бұрын
+Dan Fuller it should if the run isn't long. it's about the guage of the wires in your wall. if they are 14 guage they could fry if the distance or.load is too great. if they are 12 guage you are gravy.
@RJB_FixinStuff8 жыл бұрын
For future builds the motor rotation can be reversed by usually switching two wires in the j box. If the label is missing it my take some research online but it is usually swapping two wires between pairs.

where did you get your disk for the disk sander?
@danfuller826511 жыл бұрын
Good to hear, that was the intent. Be sure to post yours when it's done. We all need ideas.
@tealgunner11 жыл бұрын
Sorry about the type. Question. It appears that the contact wheel and idler pulley are fixed together so they rotate together. Is that right? Also, how do you keep tension on the belt? Thanks.
@mortamersnerd626410 жыл бұрын
To change the rotation, I'm sure you just pull the back cover (2 screws) and swap the wires there. I'm lucky mine has the shaft coming out both ends. It seems a bit loud. Are they all like that or is it the recording making it sound like more than it is?
@danfuller826510 жыл бұрын
Maybe you're right. Yeah it makes some sound. There are a lot of bearings moving and friction with the belts but the decibels are well below the need of hearing protection. I can't speak to other grinders I've only heard my own.

That's a real nice build. Clean and to the point.That rotating platen will come in handy if you ever start working with tube and pipe.
