Homemade 420cc Predator powered articulating 4X4 dump truck question & answer

This is a question and answer video about my 4x4 mini articulating tractor. I’m using all Subaru drive train and a 420cc Predator engine to move this 4wd machine. That air cooled little motor is more practical than a liquid cooled diesel. Even if you went through 3 motors over the life of that (Awesome rig) dump truck, it is still cheaper than the alternative. No extra fuel tank, no radiator, no starting problems in the winter, and the list goes on and on. Mike you chose well, and it showed.

I’m 65 years old and what I’ve discovered is, there are people in the world that if you presented them with a bar of gold they would ask why you neglected to polish it. You know what you want this machine to do and how you will use it, so stick to your guns. You should have... done it just the way you did. Like you said, it didn’t come in a box with plans and an assembly manual. My only suggestion is for a possible bed liner material. Check out Raptor Liner. Seems like it would be a good option to line the dump bed. 👍🏼

First and Foremost, you have built a GREAT machine here. This vid only serves to show the sound thinking and reasoning behind everything you did. If people don't like what you have done or think their way would be better, then they can get off their backsides and build their own and show you how it's done. We know that's not going to happen though. I doubt at the end of the day anyone out there would not be damn proud to have this truck and to be able to say they built and designed it themselves. I have a Kubota RTV and I think your machine leaves that for dead especially in the application you have. Considering how many of these one could built for the price of the RTV makes the comparison embarrassing! :0) You have done a TOP job Mike, that's been obvious all along, and myself and all your regular Viewers thank you for the time you have taken with your detailed and interesting vids covering this Build. It drives me crazy how 90% of the people that seem to think they know everything about building these kinds of things actually never build anything themselves, LOL! You and I both know, we don’t just jump into putting something together without thinking it through. As you pointed, these things are purpose built. You’ve done a fantastic job with this machine and I know that you are very proud of it as you very well should be! It’s fantastic! I wouldn’t have the patience to respond to all of the people that tell you you should have done this and should have done that. I give you a lot of credit! As always, I enjoyed the video very much and look forward to your future videos. Unfortunately for me, this year, most of my personal small engine projects have gone on hold. What I see is someone who is courteous and considerate, has done something many would love to say "I did that" or wait till you see these coming off a assembly line... I will be a millionaire. Not easy getting into that category nor would you enjoy that lifestyle as they hobnob around with others that have sticks up their ying yang. I truly could build something like that because of my work history is building and mechanics for over fifty years. Could I build one as good, I would like to think so by using your hard earned lessons and the grief that came with but flat footed... not so much as I have little experience with stuff that weighs less than a few tons. I have built the equivalent of a all track steering clutch machine but the cost of tracks is so much I wouldn't of done it had I not found a honey hole on these islands where the army dumped stuff still in the boxes for different machines. I completely put together a d4 cat dozer with winch and hydraulic blade and it was nearly everything from the dump site with exceptions to fuel as it was just too old, and seats were so deteriorated that my wife sowed me up some covers that went over some springs out of something else. The rest did come from the dump and a bunch of jeep parts .... me and my big mouth told someone that I had found me something big an so they followed me till they found and took everything. I think that the enclosed cab will make it nice in the winter for you and maybe just a few less bugs but for all purposes' I would keep it like that in the summer.... maybe a roof so pine cones don't hit your noggin

I think the choices you made in the design of this thing are near perfect. It's totally about function over cool factor, and in my opinion, that makes it cool! Pretty awesome that you can do an engine swap for 400ish bucks. Some people pay more than that for brake jobs on their car.

I have been following along from the start, AMAZING JOB! This is how my Dad did things and taught my siblings and myself to do things. Visit the local scrapyard and see what you can salvage, and you reach out to friends and other like minded people who have a collection of parts and pieces. You trade parts or labor to get what you want. Then you design and build AROUND WHAT YOU HAVE! It is a great way to do things! It breeds creativity, makes you think outside the box. It may not be optimized but it works! My Dad built many things, a tracked crawler for going out in the forest, for firewood, logs for the sawmill which he built, and sap for maple syrup. Most everything he needed, he built this way. Keep building, you are doing a great job!!!

I had thought about that, it’s extremely simple and affordable 👍 the only bonus with hydraulics is I get down force but if I get the right angles on my blade the snow build up should help hold it down.

Love your job, I am an engineer with farming background an I must agree with your choices of components to keep it easy and affordable. I just want to make a remark, atleast here in Sweden laminated glass ordered to size has become very nice priced, just a tip since it is a lot more resistant than plastic "glass" it also adds a lot of rigidity to the ROPS. As welder fabricator by trade I’m constantly building things myself...but this is on another level...your ability to adapt a lot of different industrial applications to your build is so cool...you have that ability where put against anything you could design and build whatever you need to get the job done...damn how id love to hang around you and learn all of your mechanical insight...think that’s what setting you apart...is the mechanical expertise you have...obviously have a lot of knowledge of automotive work as in suspension and driveline 101 type stuff! Loved the series’s please keep them coming learned a ton! All I want is that small burn table now! Thanks!
