Homemade 8ft Plywood Boat that Fits Inside My Car - Step by Step Build - Part One. I have been wanting to build a small plywood boat for at least a couple of years, so I am finally getting around to building one.
I need a small take apart nesting boat which will fit inside my car, but which is light enough for me to take down to the river and fit together easily.
This boat needs to be able to carry myself, plus all of my fishing equipment, but it still needs to be relatively small and stable. I am trying to reduce any possibility for capsizing to the absolute minimum by building detachable Outriggers, (or Pontoons or Stabilisers) which can be raised or lowered as necessary.
I have absolutely no knowledge of boat building and I am not a professional woodworker, so please make any criticisms constructive ones. I can always learn from my mistakes and possibly build a Mark 2 version.

Excellent vid Den. I wonder if eucalyptus makes for a good punt pole. 😁 Getting a smidge concerned about your nail gun. Think you need to treat it like a loaded small arm. 😂 Can't wait for the next instalment. 👍👍

Hi John. I've decided to make a kayak type paddle for it, but it will need to be quite long to get outside the Outriggers. The main propulsion will however, be a small outboard motor. The good news on the Nail Gun is that like a weapon, it has a safety device so you can't actually use it unless it is pressed up against a flat surface, but I take your point, you can't be too careful with anything which spits out metal at high speeds.

I was concerned about making mine with 90 degree sides or giving them a slight angle. I guess your answer makes sense so maybe I'll put mine at a slight angle.

Sorry about the delay on the bait recipe Adam. The lockdown has throw everything out. I'm hoping to do a video to see how it works in the next couple of weeks. After that, if it's as good as I hope it will be, I'll do a video showing how to make it.

My goodness. DIY for the sake of DIY! Multiple points of potential failure and ongoing maintenance required. All you had to do was purchase a modest dual chamber inflatable (like a Sea Hawk 2 or 3) and make a snuggly fitting plywood floor for it. Rugged, easy to transport, effortlessly waterproof and far, far cheaper! Once you make a floor you can put a seat and tackle box on it with no problems. Inflates in no time because you use a high volume low pressure pump.

I already have an Inflatable Boat and I hate it. It is a heavy amorphous lump to pull out of the car and it takes time to get it inflated. With a 5.8 HP Outboard, which also weighs 20kgs, (44lbs) it is just too much effort. In Summer I end up a sweaty heap by the time I have it in the water. With this boat I won't have to lift a large amount of weight at any point during assembly. It will also be fitted with a light weight 9kg outboard and launching wheels so when it is put together there won't be any need to lift heavy weights. I can just roll it down to the water.

@@FishingwithDen The Seahawk weighs very little
@FishingwithDen
@FishingwithDen 3 жыл бұрын
@@SearchBucket2 I checked the Specs on the Sea Hawk 2 and I was just viewing a KZbin video on it. I'm afraid, there is no way the internal dimensions would allow me to get my Fishing Seat Box, Carryall, Rod Holdall and so on into it. I would also have to sit pretty flat down on the floor which I was definitely trying to avoid because it makes my back ache. At approximately 19lbs, it is very light, but that would mean the material is pretty thin, so I would not consider it robust enough for my needs. What I need is something which I can get all my tackle into, plus I want to be able to sit at a normal seat height and be comfortable for longer journeys. Finally, I want something which is stable enough to stand up in without any possibility of capsizing.

Good job Den! Possibly the only thing I would have added is some gussets similar to your bolt points at each corner of the transom and the other vertical panels to give greater rigidity to the top of the hull.

Thanks Simon. I've had 2 inflatables now and I hate them. My first was a little larger and weighed 90lbs. My current one is 8ft long and it's an amorphous lump which weighs 60lbs. Getting it ready on a hot Summer morning makes me drip with sweat and due to the size of the tubes, it doesn't hold as much tackle as I need it to. The way my new boat fits together means I can get it ready in much less time and I will never have to lift 60lbs in one go. You will have to trust me on that one, but by the time it's finished, I'm hoping you will see what I mean. 😃👍

great vid. With the locking points what are you going to do to seal the joints as they will be below water? One thing I do know water is very cunning and can find ways to get in if it wants. Silicon all the joints on the inside and when you come to seal/paint it, all end grains need 6 coats and the main flats at least 3 ( if it is a varnish/paint that can be thinned then thin first coat by 20% and it will go deeper into the wood then use neat.) Might be an idea to put a second layer on the base you sit in? You could also put marine buoyancy foam in-between?

You seem to know a lot about boats Phillip. I'm afraid I'm already past all those very good points as the boat is now almost complete. I am just letting the videos out retrospectively, so what's done is done and I will have to see if I have built a boat or a Submarine mate. I can always build a Mk2 boat later, if I don't drown on the maiden voyage.😃😃👍👍

@@Offcut55 It's not going to be sleek and elegant mate. I just need something with a good load carrying capacity and major stability. My little Chinese air cooled outboard probably won't go much more than 4 or 5 mph. I just got rid of the 5.8Hp outboard because it was too heavy.
