Homemade 8ft Plywood Boat that Fits in my Car - Setup in 5 Minutes. I have been wanting to build a small plywood boat for at least a couple of years, so I finally got around to building one.
I needed a small take apart nesting boat which fits inside my car, but which is light enough for me to take down to the river and fit together easily.
This boat is able to carry myself, plus all of my fishing equipment, but it is still relatively small, stable and comfortable to sit in. I have also tried to reduce any possibility for capsizing to the absolute minimum by building detachable Outriggers, (Pontoons/Stabilisers) which can be raised or lowered as necessary.
I have absolutely no knowledge of boat building and I am not a professional woodworker, so please make any criticisms constructive ones. I can always learn from my mistakes and possibly build a Mark 2 version.
Here's the link to my Playlist for the videos showing how I made the boat: • DIY Plywood Boat Build

Thanks for sharing this fun project, Den. I also am building a take-apart to fit in the SUV, but I like your design much better! I way over-engineered mine (as usual), and had mine with the tub being a short one-piece, as were the pontoons going to be. That has changed! Fortunately, I am still in the drawing stages, and the ideas you have provided have not only simplified everything, but your quick construction demonstration has cut my build time to probably 1/3 to 1/2 of what it would have been, And, being 8 feet long instead of 4-1/2 is REALLY the cat's meow! I will make the front piece longer than yours, and a bit narrower than the main tub so they nest together, because the inside of my SUV is shorter than yours. I will make the bulkheads where they connect shorter as well , to allow moving from the front to the back easier. This old man isn't so limber anymore, and the front section will be long enough to make it worth it, especially when my wife is onboard. I think I may use 4 pontoons instead of 2. Your videos came just at the right time: God has a way of doing that! Now I'm thinking to make the pontoons collapsible...

The concept of the same total weight but being divided into many peices each individually lighter is genius. I would have been tempted to make the whole thing be one fold-out piece but it's really better to have the separate pieces that you attach for that reason. Then you're never lifting all the weight at once.

Having a glass of wine or three here Den, watching your video! I've had a good old chuckle at your ingenuity. I'm thinking of what my late father, an avid fisherman (and mechanical engineer) would say! We'd both be looking at each other and grinning I'm sure. Here in Wales we have the Coracles made out of willow, tar and cavas on some rivers. Perhaps you could name your craft, "The Ozacle!" Tight lines!

One thing that I have found is if you're always going to be using your boat during the day that you just need a trolling motor in one large lightweight solar panel of the same voltage as the trolling motor and then one very small lithium iron phosphate battery that could be as small as 5 amps which is what I use to go between the solar panel and the trolling motor. And your solar panel will run your motor all day long and you can use a much more powerful trolling motor than your gasoline motor. And I would imagine that your boat would actually come close to planning pretty well with even like a 30 lb trolling motor.

I just discovered this and I am amazed by your ingenuity. Curious if you’re still using the boat and wondering how it’s holding up after a year of use. If I may make one suggestion - build a roller platform (PVC pipe maybe?) that sits in the back of the car that the boat can slide on making it that much easier to pull out and push in.
@FishingwithDen
@FishingwithDen 10 ай бұрын
Hi Tom. Thanks for your comments. I'm afraid I don't have the boat anymore as I had a couple of medical issues, (nothing serious) which meant I didn't take it out much. I wouldn't want to take it out on a raging river, large lakes in a high wind or into the sea, but on the occasions that I used it, it did seem to hold up well. As for rollers, I'm sure that would work. Having said that, I didn't find it difficult to get the boat out of the car, so for me, it was fine. I imagine there are lots of other ideas people may have to improve the boat, so I'm glad I have given everyone some food for thought.

There is no License needed in NSW (Where I live) as it is being used at less than 10kts. If it is a tender for a larger vessel, you don't need to register it. As far as using it as a fishing boat in NSW, I think you do need to register it. After watching this, I will build another tender using some of your idea. I love your design. I think I will be using foam and completely covering the hull with PMF. Den, Again, Love the build!

@@deanowens334 Thanks Dean. I'm glad you found my video helpful and I hope your new boat works as well as mine. By the way, I just checked the regulations for Registration in NSW and I cannot see anything which requires a small boat like mine to be registered. Page 21 of the NSW Boating Handbook makes no mention of any requirement for a boat like mine, and the NSW RMS website says the same thing, so I'm wondering where you got that information?👍

Thinking about it further, in non planing configuration, you could make a hydrodynamicaly clean clip on aft section to reduce drag greatly and improve economy, reduce load on the motor, operating more like a proper dispacement type hull. Then, if you wanted it to plane, leave that off and go to a larger outboard.

As desploying goes, not much faster than an inflatable with wheels and airdeck but obviously has quite a few advantages in packing away and manhandling plus you get a proper seat with storage in it. I am curious how will it handle some waves. I used once that kind of outboard, oh the agony of those 5 km! Mate, if you start losing your hearing, is not the age is that outboard.
@FishingwithDen
@FishingwithDen 2 жыл бұрын
I would be interested in how it handles waves too Ovidiou. Having said that, I have designed it for places where there is little or no boat traffic. For example, I want to take it up a river which has shallow places that are only 10cm deep. I might take it onto a larger lake, but only if the winds are relatively light. I did try crossing my own boat wake after a sharp turn and it hardly noticed the waves, but that is not really a good test, so I will have to wait and see.
