Homemade Bullerjan Stove

This is video shows very shortly how I welded a Bullerjan Stove from scratch. I do not yet feel too comfortable talking in my videos so quite a lot of information is missing. Please read this article that I wrote :

My need for a better heating method for my workshop arose on a cold winter day. It was nearly -30 degrees Celcius (-22F) that day when I decided to go and work on a project. As I entered my workshop and flicked on the lights something strange happened. It was so damn cold that even my fluorescent lights would not turn on properly. My fingers got numb in just a few minutes without hand gloves - woodworking that day was not pleasant! Heating my small shop with the old wood burner would have taken at least half a day. This is when I realised that I needed a better heating method.
Disclaimer: There are obviously a few dangers involving this project. Please weld your own Bullerjan stove only when you are absolutely sure you can do it and it would be safe in the end. Use proper precautions when using a wooden heater (fire extinguisher nearby, CO2 and smoke detector, non-combustible surroundings, common sense, etc).

I subscribe to Instructables and got an email just this morning. On the front page was, how to build a bullerjan. I get so many damn emails, most of them I don’t even look at. This caught my eye. The look of it was cool, but had no idea what it was. So I read on the website and think, how awesome would this be for my garage in the wintertime! Granted, I live near the SC coast...so it’s not unbearable. But I’m interested, nonetheless. An hour later I say, let me google and see what’s out there on building one. Bam...this KZbin video comes up. I start watching it...cool...cool...hey, that looks just like one of the pictures from the Instructable. Hey! It’s exactly like one of the pictures from Instructables! Did this guy build one from th...wait a second! This IS the guy! Ha, ha! Thought it was funny enough to share. So how many total hours did you spend fabricating this? Over the course of how long? That thing is totally badass. You did a great job. How does it perform?

Sorry, I just saw your comment. What a great story, thanks for sharing :) I can´t tell you exact manhours but it took me 3 years to complete. Mainly because I had several other projects and I was lazy. The stove works like a charm - it is a bit big for my workshop but I usually open the door next to it and heat the whole second floor of the house. It needed a little tweaking in the beginning in means of air disperser but now I have not had any problems with it. Thanks for your compliments! Cheers

No worries, dude! I usually don’t expect replies, but I’m glad you did. I can 100% relate to not being able to answer how long it took in man hours, and your reason why. When I’m not working my daily job or playing with my kids, I’m in the garage building/making shit myself. With some projects taking nearly as long as as this one! It’s ridiculous how many projects I have going at one time, and how long others may sit. But hey...it wouldn’t do it any differently. That is, unless I had quadruple the size garage and $250K worth of tools and machinery!! Maybe then I could be a little more faster and cleaner! Take care, and thanks for this video.

By "going square" like you did with this, you've made it so much easier to craft! (I dreaded all the curves and coping involved in my plans for a classic Bullerjan with a round chamber and round members.) This vid was really inspiring.

Hello dear brother I hope you and your family are very good Brother we are totally dependent on wood burning stoves in winter cause we don’t have gas over here. So i have been looking for a good wood stove for my family. Could you please share your story about heating with it We just use it in one room just for heating one room. We usually use just rectangular wood stoves no air flow just sheet metal walls over all sides. Just i am wondering if build it will it make significant difference in our winter conditions? Well, I reccomend buying a proper wood stove. It could be a the original Bullerjan but be aware that these stoves have no thermal mass and only heat the air for a short period of time.

Hey hey you are a one creative guy, I love that stove, it will be nice if you share the measurements and angles, am a welder myself, and I do little proyects like that. At my job they waste all that material and I just ask for it and start working on my proyects

Very inspiring project, considering I was contemplating lashing out 5000€ to buy one. Always thought of building my own, but one worry was using pipes,bending, accuracy and getting a good weld with all the niches and angles. Thanks for blitzing my brain to square pipe. I need to duct it as well, so my work just got easier by magnitudes. Only one question remains: How long and hard have you been running the stove? Any torsion/ buckling,considering the use of soft steel? I know it has a lot of angles to make it strong. Can you share a bit of field experience with us?

Hi! I am glad you liked my build and I am glad you were inspired! I haven't done much heating with this stove since I am far away from my workshop right now. I do not really think it will be an issue what you just described. The metal after all is 5 mm thick. I will let you know if I see something ;)

Awesome but one question how do you clean the ashes out looks like they would be hard to clean out from the valley

Yeah it is. I actually thought about welding plates over the ribs at the bottom but eventually did not. I usually clean most of the ash out with a ash shovel and usually leave the rest or use my vacuum with cyclone filter

No, not really. Wood stove has a special feel to it plus you can easily get rid of all the scrap wood ;)

Excellent Idea to build your own wood stove, I'm a puzzled at some of your welds as I can see that you can do really good Mig/Stick welds yet some like like bird shite?. only being honest.

I am wondering if using the square tubing is better than round tubing ??? Am still itching to find out how much it would cost to build me one. How efficient are these stoves when compared to a batch box rocket stove.

Very efficient stoves but they work a but they work a bit better with round tubes and nice curves..the airflow is way better..I am also looking to build one . I want to use tubes diameter 50 or 60 mm . To let them curve somewhere is the biggest cost for this . Also I would work with a firewall at the inside cause with good wood the temp can get really hight so that firewall must be removable and a spare one is gonna be needed after time..

I really like you style of stove. What i am wondering if you could make this stove have a secondary burn feature put into this stove ??? Also, what would if cost to make one out of stainless steel CraftAndu ??? Please drop a line fella. Thanks.

Hey man! Well, this type of Bullerjan stove has a kind of secondary burn feature. The wood gas burns in the top part of the stove. That is why there are these two pipes feeding air to wood gas to allow it to burn. I hope I got you right? Can´t really say anything about stainless steel, I have never worked with it. The price depends largely on how much you need it and the current price in your location. I paid maybe 200 € for this metal. Cheers

While those tubes will move a good bit of air, metal is a Very good heat conductor. You should probably put some plate underneath the whole thing, so it doesn't leave burn marks in your floor.

These provide fresh air for the wood gases to burn. I copied them from the original Bullerjan stove.

@@Paulus14 No, there is no plug. Bigger stuff I remove with a small ash shovel and rest I get with a vacuum cleaner with a dust cyclone.

Nice design..! No need for a throttle flap in the chimney pipe it's just one more place to leak smoke. These welds...work on them. Seriously, they look like birds had a shit on the plate. Well, being a blacksmith and machinist for 30+ years now I know welding ain't all that easy as it looks. Especially stick welding can be a bitch. :) However, you got to have the credit for accomplishing this project...well done.
