In this video, we do a step by step tutorial on how to build the best hay bin feeder for your rabbit. We designed this DIY hay holder to be efficient and practical, while also allowing the holland lops at our rabbitry to be able to have unlimited access to fresh Timothy hay. We think it's a valuable design to add to your bunny supplies, whether you have a big rabbitry or one holland lop rabbit.
One More Venture is a suburban homestead based out of a small urban part of New England. We are a young married couple with a love for agriculture, gardening, raising livestock, our rabbitry, farming, etc! We love to bring our viewers along for our adventures and what we’re learning throughout our journey.

If you heat your razor up with a lighter it will go through the plastic smoothly without cracks, but then you have the plastic smell. I did this outside. This is a great idea my other hay bin was too small

Nice idea. And I like the bungie cords as a way to hold them to your cages. A soldering iron may help in making the holes without fear of cracking the plastic. Not sure you really need it to make the project faster, as you did it in 15 minutes. lol I did shout you guys out in my livestream yesterday, but it was at the beginning of the live, so it may have got lost in the chat while people were talking. But I tried. lol God bless.

Fantastic idea! Seriously genius because it solves every common problem with feeding hay, ie... I love that it sits above the litter box instead of in the litter box so the rabbits can't spread the hay out everywhere, pee on it and then it is no longer good. This seems like it would keep all the good hay inside and any pieces the rabbits pull out which they're not going to eat can just be used as litter, though I imagine that is very little. Second, I LOVE the idea of leaving a space at the bottom of the bin for the dust and small dusty pieces to fall. I have been reluctant to give my buns a hanging feeder like this because it seems like less foraging for them, but lets face it - even the good hay I buy from a feed store is full of dust and no mater how much I try to separate and feed only the good hay there will always be dusty hay at the bottom of their pile that they are inhailing when they shove their head in the pile and snort around for the good pieces. So for me personally, since I know my hay is dusty, I would leave 2 to 3 inches at the bottom of mine to catch the stuff I don't want them eating. Third, hay is messy! If you have more than one rabbit you may find yourself refilling their hay multiple times a day. I absolutely love how much hay you could pack in here and then not have to deal with for a time, while the buns continue to only get good fresh hay from the top! I'm so excited to try this!! If you guys ever want a challenge I'd love to see you make this out of wood and natural rope instead of plastic, just for the people like me who may live in apartments or have their rabbits in their room and would like something a little more aesthetic since the rabbits live in their living room, etc! ;)

I have used something similar to this with my rabbits for around a year and it has been so much easier and doesn’t waste as much hay. I cut the opening into the lid instead of the container.. The opening I cut was a little smaller than yours and I just stuff the container thru the hole with hay. On the back of the container I put two command hooks hanging upside down to hang on the wire of the cage. Then you can just pull it out and stuff it and put right back. The hay doesn’t fall out and the zip ties look like a chewing hazard.Plus it is easier for them to eat the hay..

I was kinda getting to know of some cool neat ideas like this for a new hay rack instead of the wire basket I'm currently using, this looks super worth the build! It already looks simple enough, but instead of zip ties I'm gona try to use maybe wire or something similar because I have a strong feeling my bunnies will try and chew the plastic ties haha they're still fairly young so I think for adult rabbits this won't be an issue. Thanks for sharing this idea!

Awesome; glad you can give it a try! Yes, a thick wire should work good instead of zip ties; we’ve gotten lucky with bunnies that aren’t very destructive!

A year late, I know, but... if you were to do an update... try using a hot iron (wood burning) to cut the hole. Do it in a well-ventilated area or outside, because it will STINK as it burns through, and it'll still take a little time... but no cracking and minimal sanding needed afterward. 👍🏽😎

My rabbits ate the bungee cords across the front, so I made holes in the back and ran the cords through the inside. But I’ve lost two more bungee cords after my rabbits managed to pull the bins away from the cage wall and eat them. I need to find some kind of all metal straps that are easy to hook and unhook from the cages. Then I think it would work great.
@onemoreventurehomestead7803
@onemoreventurehomestead7803 Жыл бұрын
Yes, I think that adjustment would be perfect! Our bunnies aren’t super destructive.. so maybe finding some metal cords to use for yours or hooks would work better!

what do you guys have in ur litter boxes? @ 11:13 - i am a new bunny owner and a little lost. are those pellets?
@hollyherr2552
@hollyherr2552 9 ай бұрын
I do believe those are the pellets used in horse bedding, which is WAY cheaper than cat litter. A 40# bag costs $6 at my tractor supply store. MUCH better than $15 for the 10# of cat litter! I changed to this when I had 8 rabbits and it made a HUGE difference in bunny costs! I now have just one mini-lop and I buy 4 bags at once and it lasts me a year!

We use wood stall pellets, typically used in horse stalls! You can find them at TSC, or at most local feed stores.

Is this type of hay bin helpful with hay fever? I am considering adopting but apparently I'm allergic to Timothy hay, so I'm looking at ideas to have as less problems as possible with hay. That bunny needs me :/
@PassionSpectrum
@PassionSpectrum Жыл бұрын
I am a bunny owner and I have a family member who is allergic to Timothy hay. There are a couple alternatives to Timothy, the most common being Orchard hay. It's a little softer, but the nutrition is mostly the same. You can also try oat hay if you do not live in the US, I know an Australian who uses that. To find the hay that is right for you and your future rabbit, you will have to do some research and experimentation. If all that doesn't work out, you can work around your allergy depending on how you react and how extreme your reaction is. Some people wear gloves when handling Timothy to prevent skin reaction, for example. An air purifier will help with dust, which usually enhances allergies to hay. Of course, talk to your healthcare provider for proper advice if you use Timothy. Small Pet Select is a good place to start looking for alternatives and hay in general. Anyways, good luck with finding the solution that works for you and congratulations on your possible, future adoption!

They definitely do. Some rabbits are aggressive chewers and you may have to alter this design to fit your bunny’s needs, such as using some sort of metal instead of the zip ties.
