No problem. I just found that bearings were too free for me, but might work for someone else. I have seen flange bearings on a really nice factory jib crane for the tilt. I would like to try to use that idea, but I am worried about the extra weight at the end of the jib. BTW I tried to make a steady cam vest and arm. It was the only thing I just couldn't make work. I'm glad yours worked for you. Thanks

Crystal clear. Play a standard definition DVD in a portable DVD player and that is what I get with the Haier. You do need to watch your exposure. Any flat screen, even the one on the camera, can give you a false perspective of your exposure. My Panasonic DVC30 has an on screen meter that gives you the level of exposure. Mostly I am checking the exposure and if I am in frame, so I don't see using a high dollar monitor. Hope this helps.

@autodaruzas I believe the "shaky" you are talking about is where the video head attaches to the jib crane. I used aluminium because weight is VERY critical even using just a four foot jib. (If you watched the second part of the video I explain the importance of keeping the weight of the jib head low.) I hoped the aluminium would have been strong, but as you see I had to add a gusset. I hope this helps you out building your jib crane. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

This is remarkably similar to my DIY jib, even down to the surveyors tripod, but I didn't think to use bushings. That will be my next modification. Also, I used the base to a boat seat as a pivot instead of a fluid head. It does not allow me to tilt (I'm working on a remote head to fix that ), but the pivot action is rock solid and incredibly smooth.

I bought a Lilliput monitor for around $200 but I think a regular 7" TV like Haier or Sony would work just as well for a lot less money. does the RCA connection give you good enough video output? Thanks.

@FLIGHTVISIONFILMS You are exactly correct. I am a pretty good designer and fabricator, and my design had flaws. I wanted to point these flaws out. Hopefully someone will not make the same mistakes I did. I am making a new design that I hope will eliminate the problems I encountered with the first jib. When I finish the new jib I will post another video, and yes there will probably be flaws with it too that I will point out.

I tried with high tolerance bronze bush (hole and studs pair with no play) found was too much friction. It was stady cam with chest brace sort of diy project, so had to be smooth. I am not criticise you, just tried to give some other idea to try. Thanks and good luck.

Almost every DIY jib crane I see on KZbin has no bushing at all. I wanted to let people know to atleast use a plastic or bronze bushing. Also it is much more compact, and economical to use a bushing than a flange bearing. When using bearings you must be VERY steady and PERFECTLY balanced. Using a bushing gives me a little room for mistakes. How different did your 2 cranes that you built operate with the bearings compaired to bushings?
@vidcreations13 жыл бұрын
@MrEverthere The monitor in the video is a Sony portable DVD player, and no it does not accept HDMI. I am now using the Haier 7" portable tv, which does not accept HDMI, but the RCA jacks are female and you can just plug you out video into the jack without a female to female adaptor.

@mtelkaix I would be happy to give you my plans, however they are in my head and not on paper. Most of the information you need is in BOTH videos. Make sure you watch the second video also. You still get play with the 5/8' axle, but no where near as much as the video head. If you need more information or help, let me know i'll see what I can do.

I know in the video I said I didn't like using aluminum, but I am working on a new video showing you how to make a jib with aluminum. I purchased my aluminum from metalsdepot online. You can get steel, but the shipping would kill you. Maybe a salvage yard or metal shelving?

Jimmy, this is a great video and I have seen your others too. Great job! Hey, I have a question for a jib I made: how do you eliminate 'bounce' that occurs at the end of an up/down move? No matter how slow or how fast, or how far the travel, or what area of travel (mid or extremity of the angular range) I always get a slight up/down 'bounce' at the end of a move that persists for 2-3 'bounces'. It's really annoying, and I wonder if you have any insights? I made my DIY jib with larger sized square tube and a fairly hefty yoke; it's meant for my 35mm film rig. It is based on your design here. While there is still a little side-side shake during panning, it can be managed with a smoother touch (I have it mounted on an old geared head which is really sturdy). No matter how smooth the touch for up/down movements there is always a bounce. I've been trying to figure out where the bounce is coming from; it's not in the camera platform. I don't think it's binding between the brass bushings and hardened bolts, but maybe the high weight of the system is causing some? I might consider upgrading to actual ball bearing joints of you think this is the case. I have also thought the bounce is coming from the beam itself... but the material is pretty hefty steel. If if is, maybe I need to add a spine to the top beam? Lastly, I have tried putting a damper at the yoke attached to the top beam... and this did not work. Thoughts greatly appreciated! Brandon
@vidcreations8 жыл бұрын
It sounds like the beam is shaking at the end where the camera is. Even an 8 foot beam will have more flex than you think. You can help that by adding a cable truss from the top of the beam from the camera, over the yoke and down to where your weights are. The taller you make the truss at the yoke the more shake you should be able to take out of the beam. You can also do the same on the left and right side of the beam to take the side shake out. If you didn't see this video of mine assembling my newest jib, take a quick look at it. At 11:14 I show you the cable truss I made for this jib crane. The truss is not tall enough on mine and it still shakes some. This is why you need to make the truss about 12 inches high. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYKkfGeHj9SefLM

If you want to use tilt you really need the balance point of your jib to be as close to the centre of rotation as possible. That's why some jibs mount to the side of the tripod head meaning that they can rest at the same height as the centre of rotation. I know that you were happy with the extra height that your in-line yoke offered, but that type of system will never be totally stable when tilting because you're shifting the centre of gravity off axis. I'm not sure that the trade off is worth it really, but if you can make it work for you, that's fine.

Not really. The tripod is not tipping, the video head is falling forward. There is too much weight above the video head, and the head cannot controll the crane.

@vidcreations12 жыл бұрын
30 to 35 lbs. I would not trust any camera tripod, unless you are just using the legs, and that is pushing it. The legs will actually twist and shake under the weight. You will destroy the video head. I used a surveyor's tripod. Put about 30 pounds on your tripod and see if it shakes. Then take an 8 foot 2x4 and mount the board about 2 feet from the end on your tripod. Put 5 pounds to take the place of the camera on the long end, and counter weight the short end and see if the tripod will hold.
