Homemade Detroit-Style Pizza

I grew up near Detroit and we didn’t call it Detroit-style pizza then. In my family we called it “the square kind.” As in, want pizza? Sure! What kind? The square kind. It wasn’t until I left Michigan that I realized it was unique to the area. Now I’m delighted to see Detroit-style pizza catch on so everyone can have the square kind!

I’m from the Detroit Metro area and we always called it deep dish pizza. Buddy’s is the only place I’ve seen that makes rows on top. Everyone else tops theirs like a traditional pizza-in layers. It’s all about the bottom crust though.

Have you ever been to Louie's in Hazel Park? I haven't been in a few years, but they were a spin-off of Buddy's and used to be pretty excellent. Plus, if you order a bottle of Chianti with dinner they let you write on the straw wrapping & they hang it on the walls when you're done.

Detroit style is ssooo underrated! Fun fact about Buddy’s, they have also been making gluten free Detroit Style pizzas since the 90’s. Only 1 of 2 really good gluten free Pizzas. The other is from dun dun dun.... Detroit Style Pizza in St. Clair Shores just north of Detroit.

Oh my goodness this was fantastic!! ALDI sells dough already made so I used that and cut up mozzarella cheese with sharp cheddar and used marinara instead of crushed tomatoes. This is delicious yummy in my tummy pizza😍😍😍 Thank you for sharing 🤗

Detroit style is a really good way to make pizza. It always amuses me when New Yorkers and Chicagoans are at each other's throats about the "right" way to make pizza, meanwhile I get to enjoy this stuff in all its crispy, airy, square glory.

I live in Windsor across the border from Detroit and we always went to Buddy's for pizza. Windsor itself has its own unique style of pizza as well - mostly because of the cheese, shredded pepperoni and canned mushrooms that are used.

Funny, a lot of places around here who serve Detroit style started offering an option for corner lovers by using two half sized pans for a large so every slice is a corner piece. I have made this recipe twice now, and both times I was super impressed with how good this pizza is. I lived in Detroit with my family for a few years when I was a kid, and it never occurred to me that this style of pizza might be specific to our area. I always thought it was just the American style of pizza! Living in France, I did not find Brick cheese but replaced it with 50/50 mozzarella and cheddar. I also did not find pepperoni (although I'm sure I could if I went to a big enough supermarket) and used chorizo instead. The flavor and the texture (omg that crust!) brought me right back to my childhood in Detroit! Thanks for sharing this great recipe, Emmy

I'm a Detroit(ish) boy and grew up down the street from one of the original three, Loui's (who used to be a cook at the original Buddy's). Great to see it getting more recognition! Try this next time, shred the cheese with a grater, slice the pep as thin as possible and bake it without the sauce, but spoon it on AFTER it's all cooked. So many different ways to make it, but that's my personal fav! Love the videos! Thank you!

Lived downriver of Detroit until I was 20. My family always had square pizza from Jets. I actually never had Buddy’s until may of this year when I visited my sister and her family. They actually had vegan cheese! It was so good. I just made this for the first time today and it was such a good treat and nostalgia for me. My wife loves it as well. I need to get a Lloyds pan! I used a cast iron skillet and it came out really good still!

Detroit girl here-Emmy you did a great job! One thing for the viewers-if you can't find brick cheese you can use muenster. Monterey Jack would be my third pick. But NEVER mozzarella! Detroit style pizza pans are made of blue steel. Those Lloyd's pans are aluminum. I highly recommend using the authentic steel pans, it creates those little black bits in the crust. Detroit - Black bottom soil, black bottom pizza.
