how easy is it to make your own wire/ cable stripper?
i made this one from scrap bits and pieces and a utility knife blade. If you were to buy the parts, it might cost you upto $10.
Stripping the sheath from copper cables increases the scrap value by up to 4 times.
Clean stripped copper is one of the most valuable scrap metal apart from brass and aluminium (aluminum).

You are the first person so far I have come across that made a stripper that slices the wire instead of peeling it like a potato. And it is adjustable. You showed me what I had in mind I just didnt know how to go about doing it. I am always having to throw away extra hardware and brackets, and there is always a box full of wire within a few weeks. It isnt a gold mine but it is money in a box that accumulates. It pains me to see so much excess be thrown out. I'd save it all if I had the room. Excellent video. It has to be worth the time, this looks pretty easy and sensible.

Thank you for the great idea! I had been thinking about how to make a cable stripper for a few days and then came across your video and it solved my problem. I used two pieces of wood instead of metal and clamped them in my vice to hold it down. It only took me 10 mins to make a simple one. And I stripped 100+ feet of 10gauge copper in about 5 mins. I work in construction and have been taking all the cable that gets skipped home with me but it's been building up faster than I can strip it using a shop-bought cable stripper that is only designed to strip a few inches at most of the end and or using a Stanley Blade and doing it across my lap which has resulted in numerous cuts on my fingers and tattered trousers I'm gonna make one of these as it looks like it makes life one hell of a lot easier!

I like your stripper design. I think it's more practical and efficient than the roller types that tend to crush the insulation off the wire. I will make two modifications to your approach. I prefer to pull the wire horizontally like another person who commented. My stripper will use a two blade approach for each given wire size. Where the blades are 180-degrees apart. Using two blade should make it even easier to get the insulation to simply fall away. Thanks for sharing your idea!

All good but l just use a blade clamped in the vice between two washers. l just put it in the right side of the vice and drag the wire over the blade. You can use different thickness washers for different size wire . Just make sure the blade tip is not protruding above the top of the vice for safety.

actually... my first prototype was drilled by a hand drill. it took a lot of patience and a steady hand. it does work. But a drill press makes it sooo much easier and neater. cheers

tsc RECYCLE e-scrapper it works however I don't have very thick angle iron so I'm kinda limited on the wire thickness and I can't seem to get the blade to stay still

hmmmm.. how about trying two square tubes side by side. It would look totally different, but will allow you to drill any size hole. As for the blade, the only way is to squeeze it in place with extreme pressure (as its not possible to put a bolt through the blade). I will try to make a video for you, for larger diameter cables.

thanks Bro, the Scrapping community is a very active and supportive bunch. I started this channel before Cyber MacGyver, but love them both equally ;) Its a good idea to collect power cables in wheelie bins, and then cash them in before christmas for beer money. $2-$6 per kilo. pure copper is best. i clean out my workshop when i get a trailer load, get over $200 a load ( no tip fees either).

Tried this exact setup, doesn't work. The blade pushes itself out after about 8 inches so I don't end up with a deep enough score to pull the wire out of the insulation. Either that or the wire rolls to the side and the same thing happens.

Nicely done, although I'm looking for a motor driven stripper. Video well done also. However, can you explain why is it we always recommend using gloves and goggles in our videos, but we don't use them ourselves?

if you left those threaded parts on you could of chucked it up in a vice and pulled the wire horizontally

+jeph4life hi. do you mean; stand the tool vertically in a vice and use it as normal, except pull on a horizontal axis? if so, then you're spot on. However i like to clamp it down with a G clamp and pull the cable vertically (for convenience). Thanks a lot for watching. Cheers
