Rollers were made using a steel threaded .75" rod, 3" wheels and PVC pipe. Tensioners are at each end of the front roller. Front view shows .25" pilot holes w/ bolts looped around the steel rod and fastened w/ a fly nut.

Thank you! No plans...sorry! I used the trial and error method. Start by determining an adequate L, W, H, etc..for your dog and go from there. I highly recommend using a vinyl laminated board underneath the carpet, I found it key for optimal belt spin.

Great job. Passive treadmills really are the way to go in preventing injuries with dogs when using them; have seen two dogs thrown or dragged from powered ones, not great for the dog involved.

Any carpet with rubber bottom or other soft surface (for dog pads) will work. Osh sells a similar carpet to the one I used in this CM. It's approx. 18in wide. Tensioner done using an eye bolt (/butterfly nut) threaded through the steal rod that supports the front roller.

steven espinoza 3in dolly wheels were almost a perfect fit for 3in pvc pipe. Level & Screw in place at end cap of pvc then use 1/4in thread steel rod as axle. Use washers and lock nuts to secure. You can also utilize eye bolts through the rods at each end with fly nut to increase/decrease tension and level belt.

How is this vs the grand carpet mill you had? How many minutes do you run her in the mill and how many times per day?
@DogFitness2k3 жыл бұрын
It cost under $150 to make, quieter, designed without the frame at the dogs heal (where their pad can hit), it was longer, and sold for $400. Overall, it was a great build, but so is the GCM. She used it 10-20 mins., once a day or until she indicated she was done. She’s almost 10 y/o now, and can still out work most dogs half her age.

Make sure the carpet side is down. Osh sells a rubberized outdoor carpet you can cut to size and sewn together. Also try spraying lube (wd40 etc) underneath, carpet/vinyl coated side...keep in mind you don't want it to spin too freely.

Hello Kaila, No! I do not use prong collars to train my dogs! In this vid Maya is using a reg choke chain however the leash is fixed to both loops so the collar never tightens! I only used this type of collar while training Maya to use the carpet mill. If you check the most recent vids of her working, you'll see that a modified (I cut off the bottom strap to avoid armpit rub) leather harness is being used now! Thanks for watching!

If your dog is only 10-12 lbs would they be able to use it? And could it be shorter than 54in? Would you make one to sell?
@DogFitness2k9 жыл бұрын
Hello Elva, I could build one but it might not be as beneficial for smaller dogs. I personally wouldn't recommend a carpet mill for any dog under 30lbs (dog shown in vid is 50lbs). Also, when considering cost, it would probably be best to buy a mechanical treadmill for the household. Best for smaller dogs to have lean muscle, they don't necessarily need strength or endurance. Same reason you wouldn't take a small dog on a 3+mile run etc...
@elvasmith52629 жыл бұрын
The treadmill shown is manuel, correct. So the dog could Walk instead of run if he Choose to? I'm handicapped and can't walk them. The only exercise they get is what little walking around when they go out. I know they couldn't run like yours for very long but for just walking or a short run would it work? I'm just wondering if a small dog had enough weight to make it eork. I'm assuming you've never had a smaller dog attempt to just yours? I don't have room for a big treadmill, Ive looked at them. And the ones for dogs are 500+. that's why I was wondering if it could be as sm as 19x35 or so. Thanks Alot for getting back to me!
@DogFitness2k9 жыл бұрын
I have smaller dogs (Chihuahua & mini pincher) but no, they have never tried it. Biggest concern is that the dog would need to wear a harness and struggle to turn the carpet textured belt. Check out "dog trotter" they make a slate style mill for small/toy dogs. I have seen them for sale (used) on Craigslist, otherwise, they're a bit pricey. Good luck!
@unconventionalhomesteading18659 жыл бұрын
Elva Smith I'll be building one soon (NOT for sale), modeled after a Grand Carpet Mill "Small Dog Mill" (www.grandcarpetmill.com/smalldog.htm). It's "Recommended for dogs under 45 pounds, like Jack Russells Dachshunds Chihuahuas Pomeranians" From what I've read, people who have bought a Grand Carpet Mill for their dogs have been very happy with the quality and value. $400 shipped seems quite reasonable to me, so if you're not handy or inclined to build one yourself, you're not likely to find a better deal. Unless you find yourself up-sizing to a considerably larger dog, this should be suited for any structurally-sound small/medium dog. So why am I building one? It's a combination of "Because I can". "Sounds like fun", and "Why not". If you can't and/or don't want to... go to: www.grandcarpetmill.com/smalldog.htm

Find your nearest carpet wholesaler/warehouse and ask them what options they offer when seaming carpet together. You might find it easier/cheaper (cost wise) to have the ends permanently sewn together. In this case, your build won't need wooden ends near the rollers and perhaps one side wall that can detach to allow for easy install/removal of the belt. Note: if the carpet/belt is too tight it won't spin, measure from ends of rollers, double that amount and add 8-10in, this worked best for my application. Good luck!

Is the dog wearing a prong collar? To each their own as far as the use of corrective collars, but if you ARE going to use them, this is definitely not the way. Not only could the dog really hurt herself by running with it on, but you're just desensitizing her to any corrections you would give on leash, which makes it less effective.
